Cornelius Nepos: Fortune, Biography, and the Late Roman Republic
Abstract: This paper examines ancient biography and the late Roman Republic by analyzing the surviving writings of Cornelius Nepos. Cornelius Nepos was a late Republican intellectual and friend of several of the most prominent literary figures of his day. The literature on Nepos tended to be dismissive of the author until the 1980s, when it began to shift towards viewing Nepos through the lens of ancient biography. By examining the theme of fortuna [fortune] throughout Nepos’ work and contrasting it with usage of the theme in other Latin authors or Greek historians, this paper demonstrates that Nepos adapts a longstanding historical theme to his own project and time in a number of ways. These include treating fortuna as a phenomenon that takes place at the level of the individual and focusing on how the invidia (jealousy) of one’s peers in response to good fortune can prove dangerous. These findings indicate that Nepos was an author with unique insights into the events of his own lifetime

met in London. The purpose of this 2
nd
TwiCs international symposium
was to share perspectives and experiences on ethical aspects of the
TwiCs design, discuss how TwiCs relate to the current ethical frame-
work, provide a forum in which to discuss and debate ethical issues
and identify future directions for conceptual and empirical research.
The symposium was supported by the Wellcome Trust and the NIHR
CLAHRC Yorkshire and Humber and organised by members of the
TwiCs network led by Clare Relton and attended by people from the
UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Canada and USA. The two-day sympo-
sium enabled an international group to meet and share experiences
of the TwiCs design (also known as the
‘
cohort multiple RCT design
’
),
and to discuss plans for future research. Over the two days, invited
plenary talks were interspersed by discussions, posters and mini pre-
sentations from bioethicists, triallists and health research regulators.
Key findings of the symposium were: (1) It is possible to make a
compelling case to ethics committees that TwiCs designs are ap-
propriate and ethical; (2) The importance of wider considerations
around the ethics of inefficient trial designs; and (3) some questions
about the ethical requirements for content and timing of informed
consent for a study using the TwiCs design need to be decided on
a case-by-case basis
Primary Tumor Site for Localized Merkel Cell Carcinoma Drives Different Management Strategies Without Impacting Oncologic Outcomes
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinically localized Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has been associated with high rates of disease relapse. This study examines how primary tumor anatomic site drives patterns of care and outcomes in a large cohort treated in the contemporary era.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patterns of care and associated outcomes were evaluated for clinically Stage I-II MCC patients treated at our institution with adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) to the primary site and/or regional nodal basin as a component of their curative intent therapy between 2014-2021.
RESULTS: Of 80 patients who met inclusion criteria, the primary tumor anatomic site was head and neck (HN) for 42 (53%) and non-head and neck (NHN) for 38 (47%). Primary tumor risk factors were similar between cohorts. Fewer patients with HN tumors had wide local excision (WLE; HN-81% vs. NHN-100% p \u3c 0.01). Of those undergoing WLE, patients with HN tumors received higher dose adjuvant RT (\u3e50 Gy: HN-70% vs. NHN-8%; p \u3c 0.01). Patients with HN tumors were less likely to undergo sentinel lymph node biopsy (HN-62%vs. NHN-100%; p \u3c 0.01) and more likely to have elective nodal RT (HN-48% vs. NHN-0%). Despite varying management strategies, there was no significant difference in local recurrence-free survival (3-yr LRFS HN-94% vs. NHN-94%; p = 0.97), nodal recurrence-free survival (3-yr NRFS HN-89% vs. NHN-85%; p = 0.71) or overall recurrence-free survival (3-yr RFS 73% HN vs. 80% NHN; p = 0.44).
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with primary MCC who had RT as a component of their initial treatment strategy, anatomically-driven heterogeneous treatment approaches were associated with equally excellent locoregional disease control

The Inner-Shelf Dynamics Experiment

Cross-shelf exchange through the inner shelf has important implications for coastal water quality, ecological connectivity, and lateral movement of sediment and heat. The Inner-Shelf Dynamics Experiment (ISDE) was an intensive, coordinated, multi-institution field experiment from September–October 2017, conducted from the midshelf, through the inner shelf, and into the surfzone near Point Sal, California. Satellite, airborne, shore- and ship-based remote sensing, in-water moorings and ship-based sampling, and numerical ocean circulation models forced by winds, waves, and tides were used to investigate the dynamics governing the circulation and transport in the inner shelf and the role of coastline variability on regional circulation dynamics. Here, the following physical processes are highlighted: internal wave dynamics from the midshelf to the inner shelf; flow separation and eddy shedding off Point Sal; offshore ejection of surfzone waters from rip currents; and wind-driven subtidal circulation dynamics. The extensive dataset from ISDE allows for unprecedented investigations into the role of physical processes in creating spatial heterogeneity, and nonlinear interactions between various inner-shelf physical processes. Case report: whole exome sequencing of primary cardiac angiosarcoma highlights potential for targeted therapies
Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
