Automaticity in processing spatial-numerical associations: Evidence from a perceptual orientation judgment task of Arabic digits in frames.
Human adults are faster to respond to small/large numerals with their left/right hand when they judge the parity of numerals, which is known as the SNARC (spatial-numerical association of response codes) effect. It has been proposed that the size of the SNARC effect depends on response latencies. The current study introduced a perceptual orientation task, where participants were asked to judge the orientation of a digit or a frame surrounding the digit. The present study first confirmed the SNARC effect with native Chinese speakers (Experiment 1) using a parity task, and then examined whether the emergence and size of the SNARC effect depended on the response latencies (Experiments 2, 3, and 4) using a perceptual orientation judgment task. Our results suggested that (a) the automatic processing of response-related numerical-spatial information occurred with Chinese-speaking participants in the parity task; (b) the SNARC effect was also found when the task did not require semantic access; and (c) the size of the effect depended on the processing speed of the task-relevant dimension. Finally, we proposed an underlying mechanism to explain the SNARC effect in the perceptual orientation judgment task
Clinical value of miR-23a-3p expression in early diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease
Introduction: The objective was to observe the expression of miR-23a-3p in the serum of patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy (T2DN) and to explore its clinical significance.
Materials and methods: 112 patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into a simple diabetes mellitus (NON) group, T2DN microalbuminuria (MIC) group, and T2DN macroalbuminuria (MAC) group, according to the urinary protein-creatinine ratio (uACR). Clinical data were collected, miR-23a-3p levels in serum were measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and clinical parameters were measured by an automatic biochemical analyser; the influencing factors of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and the correlation between miR-23a-3p expression and clinical parameters were analysed.
Results: The expression of miR-23a-3p in the serum of the DKD group was lower than that of the normal control (CON) and NON groups. Correlation analysis showed that miR-23a-3p was positively correlated with urinary albumin (Albu), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol (CHOL), glycated albumin (GA-L), serum creatinine (Scr), fasting blood glucose (GLU), and uric acid (UA), negatively correlated with uACR and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), but not correlated with urinary creatinine (CREA). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of miR-23a-3p for the diagnosis of DKD was 0.686 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.599–0.773], with a sensitivity of 64.5% and a specificity of 71.2%; the AUC for differentiating NON from DKD was 0.700 (95% CI: 0.598–0.802), with a sensitivity of 61.8% and a specificity of 77.8%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum miR-23a-3plevels were not associated with the development of DKD after adjusting for other levels of influence and were not significant for the differentiation of NON and DKD.
Conclusion: Serum miR-23a-3p levels are decreased in T2DN patients, and this change becomes more significant with the severity of the disease, which may be a marker for the early diagnosis and progression of T2DN
Spin polarized proton beam generation from gas-jet targets by intense laser pulses
A method of generating spin polarized proton beams from a gas jet by using a
multi-petawatt laser is put forward. With currently available techniques of
producing pre-polarized monatomic gases from photodissociated hydrogen halide
molecules and petawatt lasers, proton beams with energy ~ 50 MeV and ~ 80 %
polarization are proved to be obtained. Two-stage acceleration and spin
dynamics of protons are investigated theoretically and by means of fully
self-consistent three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Our results
predict the dependence of the beam polarization on the intensity of the driving
laser pulse. Generation of bright energetic polarized proton beams would open a
domain of polarization studies with laser driven accelerators, and have
potential application to enable effective detection in explorations of quantum
chromodynamics
Survival Predictive Nomograms for Non-Surgical Brain Metastases Patients From Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Receiving Radiotherapy: A Population-Based Study
OBJECTIVE: A high number of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastasis who have not had surgery often have a negative outlook. Radiotherapy remains a most common and effective method. Nomograms were developed to forecast the cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) in NSCLC individuals with nonoperative brain metastases who underwent radiotherapy.
METHODS: Information was gathered from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database about patients diagnosed with NSCLC who had brain metastases not suitable for surgery. Nomograms were created and tested using multivariate Cox regression models to forecast CSS and OS at intervals of 1, 2, and 3 years.
RESULTS: The research involved 3413 individuals diagnosed with NSCLC brain metastases who had undergone radiotherapy but had not experienced surgery. These participants were randomly divided into two categories. The analysis revealed that gender, age, ethnicity, marital status, tumor location, tumor laterality, tumor grade, histology, T stage, N stage, chemotherapy, tumor size, lung metastasis, bone metastasis, and liver metastasis were significant independent predictors for OS and CSS. The C-index for the training set for predicting OS was .709 (95% CI, .697-.721), and for the validation set, it was .705 (95% CI, .686-.723), respectively. The C-index for predicting CSS was .710 (95% CI, .697-.722) in the training set and .703 (95% CI, .684-.722) in the validation set, respectively. The nomograms model, as suggested by the impressive C-index, exhibits outstanding differentiation ability. Moreover, the ROC and calibration curves reveal its commendable precision and distinguishing potential.
CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, highly accurate and reliable nomograms were developed to predict OS and CSS in NSCLC patients with non-surgical brain metastases, who have undergone radiotherapy treatment. The nomograms may assist in tailoring counseling strategies and choosing the most effective treatment method

Sequencing technology in sarcopenia: current research progress and future trends
BackgroundMuscle is an important tissue of the human body. Muscle atrophy is common in people of all ages, which will lead to human weakness and decline of motor function, which is one of the important causes of disability. The common methods of genomics research are transcriptome, proteomics and metabolomics, which are important means to explore the molecular pathology of diseases. In recent years, combinatorial research has been carried out on a large scale in the field of muscle atrophy. However, no author in this field has carried out bibliometrics and visual analysis.MethodsIn this study, articles related to the histological study of muscular dystrophy since 2000 were searched from the Web of Science core database (WoSCC). We will retrieve the results through CiteSpace, VosViewer and R for data statistics and visual analysis.ResultsIn this study, a total of 141 publications were collected, and the number of publications increased year by year. These 141 articles came from 1031 co-authors from 361 institutions in 31 countries and were published in 92 journals. A total of 6286 articles from 1383 journals were cited. Authors from American institutions have published the most articles and have been cited the most, and authors from other countries have also made considerable contributions.ConclusionThis is the first bibliometric and visual analysis of published research in the field of muscular dystrophy through systematic data retrieval and combined with a variety of bibliometric analysis tools. Through these data, we summarize the previous studies of scholars, and provide prospects for future research in the field
Assessment Accuracy of Standard Point Positioning Enhanced by Observation and Position Domain Filtering Utilizing a Multi-Epoch Least-Squares Integration Method
To enhance the positioning accuracy of standalone GNSS receivers in environments unable to provide precise ephemeris and clock offset, such as undeveloped forest areas that lack network communication and power supply, this study employed the Time Difference Carrier Phase (TDCP) technology to improve the positioning accuracy of Standard Point Positioning (SPP), where the Least-Squares (LS) and the extended Multi-Epoch Least Squares (MELS) method were applied in the position domain filtering for a single GNSS receiver and compare its performance with the existing observation domain filtering method. Firstly, the simulated data sets with various positioning accuracies were used to verify the effectiveness and convergence of the LS filtering methods. The results indicate that the LS filtering method produces a lower root mean square (RMS) error than the original strategy. Secondly, this study uses two kinematic GNSS data sets to evaluate the performance of the observation and position domain filtering, with an emphasis on the MELS method. The numerical experiment results show that the position domain LS filtering method outperforms the other two methods. The open environment experiments result shows that the positioning domain filtering method achieved positioning accuracies of 0.202 m, 0.843 m, and 2.036 m in the E, N, and U directions, respectively, with improvements of 68.0%, 21.6%, and 24.0%, compared to the original algorithm which achieved positioning accuracies of 0.631 m, 1.076 m, and 2.680 m. It also achieved improvements of 24.0%, 4.0%, and 18.3%, respectively, compared to the observation domain filtering method with positioning accuracies of 0.353 m, 0.886 m, and 2.526 m. The forest scenes experiments result shows that the positioning domain filtering method achieved positioning accuracies of 1.308 m, 1.375 m, and 2.133 m in the E, N, and U directions, respectively, with improvements of 42.4%, 36.2%, and 27.6%, compared to original algorithm which achieved positioning accuracies of 1.863 m, 1.873 m, and 2.722 m, and also achieved improvements of 27.0%, 19.4% and 10.6%, respectively, comparing to observation domain filtering method with positioning accuracies of 1.661 m, 1.642 m and 2.359 m. Moreover, the examination of the LS method results based on different epochs reveals that the filtering accuracy increases as more epochs are incorporated into the position domain integration and the enhancement value reaches a few millimeters
Enhanced Expression of Pullulanase in Bacillus subtilis by New Strong Promoters Mined From Transcriptome Data, Both Alone and in Combination
Pullulanase plays an important role as a starch hydrolysis enzyme in the production of bio-fuels and animal feed, and in the food industry. Compared to the methods currently used for pullulanase production, synthesis by Bacillus subtilis would be safer and easier. However, the current yield of pullulanase from B. subtilis is low to meet industrial requirements. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the yield of pullulanase by B. subtilis. In this study, we mined 10 highly active promoters from B. subtilis based on transcriptome and bioinformatic data. Individual promoters and combinations of promoters were used to improve the yield of pullulanase in B. subtilis BS001. Four recombinant strains with new promoters (Phag, PtufA, PsodA, and PfusA) had higher enzyme activity than the control (PamyE). The strain containing PsodA+fusA (163 U/mL) and the strain containing PsodA+fusA+amyE (336 U/mL) had the highest activity among the analyzed dual- and triple-promoter construct stains in shake flask, which were 2.29 and 4.73 times higher than that of the strain with PamyE, respectively. Moreover, the activity of the strain containing PsodA+fusA+amyE showed a maximum activity of 1,555 U/mL, which was 21.9 times higher than that of the flask-grown PamyE strain in a 50-liter fermenter. Our work showed that these four strong promoters mined from transcriptome data and their combinations could reliably increase the yield of pullulanase in quantities suitable for industrial applications
