Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis
The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities with the goal of making the types of research tasks that they support more explicit (e.g., transcribing, segmenting, coding, linking, and commenting on data). We look closely at how these functionalities relate to each other, and at how system design influences research tasks
Topic Maps and library and information science : an exploratory study of Topic Maps principles from a Knowledge and Information Organization perspective
Purpose: This master thesis attempts to present a ‘state of the art’ of the placement of Topic Maps
(ISO13250) in Library and Information Science, through an extensive literature review and a synthesis
based on their principles. It was sited from a Knowledge and Information Organization perspective,
represented by the work by Elain Svenonius The Intellectual Foundation of Information Organization
and some of the concepts of Knowledge Organization. This thesis also intends to present a conceptual
and theoretical framework for future research.
Design/methodology/approach: The study under review presents a qualitative approach based on
Grounded Theory principles to analyse the literature and build the conceptual framework for its
analysis. The literature reviewed consisted of more than sixty documents, which included, among
others, journal articles, conference presentations and papers, student reports and thesis, as well as a
book chapter. Moreover, this was complemented with information obtained from mailing lists, blog
postings and websites, and some unstructured interviews.
Findings: Topic Maps appears to be a development aligned within the tradition of Knowledge and
Information Organization but is completely adapted to the context of the Web and the digital
environments. In a LIS perspective, it is bibliographic meta-language able to represent, extend and
mostly integrate all the existing Knowledge Organization Systems in a standards-based generic model
applicable to digital content and online presentation.
Conceptually, Topic Maps is in the borders of the LIS discipline with Knowledge Representation and
Computer Science, where LIS conceptual models play the role of intermediaries by providing the
ontologies to the ‘bibliographic universe’. Topic Maps questions traditional LIS views and principles.
Even though some of them still remain the same, as the meaning-based identification of entities, the
notions of ‘document’ and ‘subject’ require further studies.
Some important applications give account of the capabilities and potentials for further developments
and research on Topic Maps in LIS. The main field of application is the Digital Humanities and TEIcodified
texts presentation.Joint Master Degree in Digital Library Learning (DILL
From social tagging to polyrepresentation: a study of expert annotating behavior of moving images
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThis thesis investigates “nichesourcing” (De Boer, Hildebrand, et al., 2012), an emergent initiative of cultural heritage crowdsoucing in which niches of experts are involved in the annotating tasks. This initiative is studied in relation to moving image annotation, and in the context of audiovisual heritage, more specifically, within the sector of film archives. The work presents a case study of film and media scholars to investigate the types of annotations and attribute descriptions that they could eventually contribute, as well as the information needs, and seeking and searching behaviors of this group, in order to determine what the role of the different types of annotations in supporting their expert tasks would be. The study is composed of three independent but interconnected studies using a mixed methodology and an interpretive approach. It uses concepts from the information behavior discipline, and the "Integrated Information Seeking and Retrieval Framework" (IS&R) (Ingwersen and Järvelin, 2005) as guidance for the investigation. The findings show that there are several types of annotations that moving image experts could contribute to a nichesourcing initiative, of which time-based tags are only one of the possibilities. The findings also indicate that for the different foci in film and media research, in-depth indexing at the content level is only needed for supporting a specific research focus, for supporting research in other domains, or for engaging broader audiences. The main implications at the level of information infrastructure are the requirement for more varied annotating support, more interoperability among existing metadata standards and frameworks, and the need for guidelines about crowdsoucing and nichesourcing implementation in the audiovisual heritage sector. This research presents contributions to the studies of social tagging applied to moving images, to the discipline of information behavior, by proposing new concepts related to the area of use behavior, and to the concept of “polyrepresentation” (Ingwersen, 1992, 1996) applied to the humanities domain.

This research has focused on showing the state of the main institutional and organizational categories of the public library, which determine the development of reading promotion initiatives. The general purpose of this research was to offer a nominal, quantitative and structural description of reading promotion initiatives used by the public libraries in Medellín. This will make possible to know a general map of their current state. Despite many of the conceptions, assessments and proposals made in this map, it could be applied not only in Medellín but also in broader contexts such as Colombia and even Latin America. The specific purpose of this research was, on the one hand, the study of practices and subject field discourses, which support the reading promotion initiatives in the abovementioned libraries, so that the function of the public library in the social task of reader's education can be understood. And, on the other hand, to give a base of empirical recognition of relationships between public library and reading. However, this paper deals only with the findings related to library discourses about the library as an institution and the reading promotion (concept of public library, reading, reader, reading promotion, and reading encouragement). The main concepts of this research are public library and reading promotion. Concepts related to society, language, discourse and practice from the point of view of Habermas, Castells, Bordieu, and Ricouer also have been taken up again. Finally, the methodological approach of this work is qualitative
Demonstrating HIVE and HIVE-ES: Supporting Term Browsing and Automatic Text Indexing with Linked Open Vocabularies
Abstract y presentación presentados en el WorkshopThe HIVE (Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering) and HIVE-España (ES) projects both support dynamic, automatic metadata generation using multiple vocabularies. This demonstration will present both the HIVE and HIVE-ES projects and showcase the overarching HIVE framework and functionalities, and give insight into the broader issues relating to linked open vocabularies—LOV. HIVE relies on the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) and the Kea++/Maui algorithms, which enable more sophisticated terminological selection compared to frequency counts. Baseline studies provide some positive, yet mixed results, and a framework for further study. The adequacy of HIVE and HIVE-ES's searching and browsing capabilities are required to be addressed; and the research should target SKOS use for different types of vocabularies (thesaurus vs. subject heading lists) and, specially on the performance of the text indexing algorithms used depending on the type of vocabulary, the features of the training set documents and those indexed, and the language of all of them
