An Integrated Stereo Vision and Fuzzy Logic Controller for Following Vehicles in an Unstructured Environment
Hand Keypoint Detection in Single Images using Multiview Bootstrapping
We present an approach that uses a multi-camera system to train fine-grained
detectors for keypoints that are prone to occlusion, such as the joints of a
hand. We call this procedure multiview bootstrapping: first, an initial
keypoint detector is used to produce noisy labels in multiple views of the
hand. The noisy detections are then triangulated in 3D using multiview geometry
or marked as outliers. Finally, the reprojected triangulations are used as new
labeled training data to improve the detector. We repeat this process,
generating more labeled data in each iteration. We derive a result analytically
relating the minimum number of views to achieve target true and false positive
rates for a given detector. The method is used to train a hand keypoint
detector for single images. The resulting keypoint detector runs in realtime on
RGB images and has accuracy comparable to methods that use depth sensors. The
single view detector, triangulated over multiple views, enables 3D markerless
hand motion capture with complex object interactions.Comment: CVPR 201
Health Coaching as an Intervention for Picky Eaters
Although childhood âpicky eatingâ or âfussy eatingâ or âfood neophobiaâ is well established as a subject of research, commentary, and treatment guidelines, there is very little published research exploring the origins and basis of adult food neophobia, much less its treatment. Existing treatment guidelines for picky eating tend to focus on cognitive behavioral interventions. The consequences of picky eating, although not extensively researched, include inadequate nutrition and weight management difficultiesâboth significant contributors to the worldwide disease burden. Health coaching has a focus on personal choice, reflection on previous successes and current strengths, as well as identification of a personal health vision and achievable goals. As such, it may play a useful role in supporting behavioral change in adult picky eaters. A structured intervention, rooted in health coaching skills and culinary medicine aimed at supporting such change, is proposed
Reviewing progress in public involvement in NIHR research : developing and implementing a new vision for the future
Objectives
To review the progress of public involvement (PPI) in NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) research, identify barriers and enablers, reflect on the influence of PPI on the wider health research system in the UK and internationally and develop a vision for public involvement in research for 2025. The developing evidence base, growing institutional commitment and public involvement activity highlight its growth as a significant international social movement.
Design
The âBreaking Boundaries Reviewâ was commissioned by the Department of Health. An expert advisory panel was convened. Data sources included: an online survey, international evidence sessions, workshop events, open submission of documents and supporting materials and existing systematic reviews. Thematic analysis identified key themes. NVivo was used for data management. The themes informed the reportâs vision, mission and recommendations, published as âGoing the Extra MileâImproving the health and the wealth of the nation through public involvement in researchâ. The Review is now being implemented across the NIHR.
Results
This paper reports the Review findings, the first of its type internationally. A range of barriers and enablers to progress were identified, including attitudes, resources, infrastructure, training and support and leadership. The importance of evidence to underpin practice and continuous improvement emerged. Co-production was identified as a concept central to strengthening public involvement in the future. The Vision and Mission are supported by four suggested measures of success, reach, refinement, relevance and relationships.
Conclusions
The NIHR is the first funder of its size and importance globally to review its approach to public involvement. While significant progress has been made, there is a need to consolidate progress and accelerate the spread of effective practice, drawing on evidence. The outcomes of the Review are being implemented across the NIHR. The findings and recommendations have transferability for other organisations, countries and individuals
Can the effects of temporal grouping explain the similarities and differences between free recall and serial recall?
Temporal grouping can provide a principled explanation for changes in the serial position curves and output orders that occur with increasing list length in immediate free recall (IFR) and immediate serial recall (ISR). To test these claims, we examined the effects of temporal grouping on the order of recall in IFR and ISR of lists of between one and 12 words. Consistent with prior research, there were significant effects of temporal grouping in the ISR task with mid-length lists using serial recall scoring, and no overall grouping advantage in the IFR task with longer list lengths using free recall scoring. In all conditions, there was a general tendency to initiate recall with either the first list item or with one of the last four items, and then to recall in a forward serial order. In the grouped IFR conditions, when participants started with one of the last four words, there were particularly heightened tendencies to initiate recall with the first item of the most recent group. Moreover, there was an increased degree of forward-ordered transitions within groups than across groups in IFR. These findings are broadly consistent with Farrell's model, in which lists of items in immediate memory are parsed into distinct groups and participants initiate recall with the first item of a chosen cluster, but also highlight shortcomings of that model. First evidence of cryptotephra in palaeoenvironmental records associated with Norse occupation sites in Greenland
The Norse/Viking occupation of Greenland is part of a dispersal of communities across the North Atlantic coincident with the supposed Medieval Warm Period of the late 1st millennium AD. The abandonment of the Greenland settlements has been linked to climatic deterioration in the Little Ice Age as well as other possible explanations. There are significant dating uncertainties over the time of European abandonment of Greenland and the potential influence of climatic deterioration. Dating issues largely revolve around radiocarbon chronologies for Norse settlements and associated mire sequences close to settlement sites. Here we show the potential for moving this situation forward by a combination of palynological, radiocarbon and cryptotephra analyses of environmental records close to three âiconicâ Norse sites in the former Eastern Settlement of Greenland â Herjolfsnes, Hvalsey and Garðar (the modern Igaliku). While much work remains to be undertaken, our results show that palynological evidence can provide a useful marker for both the onset and end of Norse occupation in the region, while the radiocarbon chronologies for these sequences remain difficult. Significantly, we here demonstrate the potential for cryptotephra to become a useful tool in resolving the chronology of Norse occupation, when coupled with palynology. For the first time, we show that cryptotephra are present within palaeoenvironmental sequences located within or close to Norse settlement ruin-groups, with tephra horizons detected at all three sites. While shard concentrations were small at Herjolfsnes, concentrations sufficient for geochemical analyses were detected at Igaliku and Hvalsey. WDS-EPMA analyses of these tephra indicate that, unlike the predominantly Icelandic tephra sources reported in the Greenland ice core records, the tephra associated with the Norse sites correlate more closely with volcanic centres in the Aleutians and Cascades. Recent investigations of cryptotephra dispersal from North American centres, along with our new findings, point to the potential for cryptotephra to facilitate hypothesis testing, providing a key chronological tool for refining the timing of Norse activities in Greenland (e.g. abandonment) and of environmental contexts and drivers (e.g. climate forcing)

Sample size and classification error for Bayesian change-point models with unlabelled sub-groups and incomplete follow-up
Many medical (and ecological) processes involve the change of shape, whereby one trajectory changes into another trajectory at a specific time point. There has been little investigation into the study design needed to investigate these models. We consider the class of fixed effect change-point models with an underlying shape comprised two joined linear segments, also known as broken-stick models. We extend this model to include two sub-groups with different trajectories at the change-point, a change and no change class, and also include a missingness model to account for individuals with incomplete follow-up. Through a simulation study, we consider the relationship of sample size to the estimates of the underlying shape, the existence of a change-point, and the classification-error of sub-group labels. We use a Bayesian framework to account for the missing labels, and the analysis of each simulation is performed using standard Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. Our simulation study is inspired by cognitive decline as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination, where our extended model is appropriate due to the commonly observed mixture of individuals within studies who do or do not exhibit accelerated decline. We find that even for studies of modest size ( nâ=â500, with 50 individuals observed past the change-point) in the fixed effect setting, a change-point can be detected and reliably estimated across a range of observation-errors. </jats:p
