The "Cognitive Turn": A Short Guide for Nervous Drivers.
In this brief primer on the emergent field of cognitive literary criticism, I aim to offer a tentative outline of its more representative lines of research after roughly twenty to twenty five years of activity. One of my main concerns will be to attend to some of the main objections that the field has been charged with in its short life, and to highlight the ways in which cognitive critics have addressed such objections. After a brief sketch of the main fields of activity, I will consider some of the possible future directions, with a focus on the different ways in which cognitive critics have embraced enactive approach-es to embodied and embedded cognition

Failure mode identification and end of life scenarios of offshore wind turbines: a review
In 2007, the EU established challenging goals for all Member States with the aim of obtaining 20% of their energy consumption from renewables, and offshore wind is expected to be among the renewable energy sources contributing highly towards achieving this target. Currently wind turbines are designed for a 25-year service life with the possibility of operational extension. Extending their efficient operation and increasing the overall electricity production will significantly increase the return on investment (ROI) and decrease the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), considering that Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) will be distributed over a larger production output. The aim of this paper is to perform a detailed failure mode identification throughout the service life of offshore wind turbines and review the three most relevant end of life (EOL) scenarios: life extension, repowering and decommissioning. Life extension is considered the most desirable EOL scenario due to its profitability. It is believed that combining good inspection, operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies with the most up to date structural health monitoring and condition monitoring systems for detecting previously identified failure modes, will make life extension feasible. Nevertheless, for the cases where it is not feasible, other options such as repowering or decommissioning must be explored
The Impact of Banking Crises on Money Demand and Price Stability
This paper empirically investigates the monetary impact of banking crises in Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, and Uruguay during 1975-98. Cointegration analysis and error correction modeling are used to research two issues: (i) whether money demand stability is threatened by banking crises; and (ii) whether crises lead to structural breaks in the relation between monetary indicators and prices. Overall, no systematic evidence that banking crises cause money demand instability is found. However, the results on price stability are mixed; for three out of the seven countries, there appears to be evidence of instability. . Copyright 2002, International Monetary Fund

Structural health monitoring of offshore wind turbines: A review through the Statistical Pattern Recognition Paradigm
Offshore Wind has become the most profitable renewable energy source due to the remarkable development it has experienced in Europe over the last decade. In this paper, a review of Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMS) for offshore wind turbines (OWT) has been carried out considering the topic as a Statistical Pattern Recognition problem. Therefore, each one of the stages of this paradigm has been reviewed focusing on OWT application. These stages are: Operational Evaluation; Data Acquisition, Normalization and Cleansing; Feature Extraction and Information Condensation; and Statistical Model Development. It is expected that optimizing each stage, SHMS can contribute to the development of efficient Condition-Based Maintenance Strategies. Optimizing this strategy will help reduce labor costs of OWTs׳ inspection, avoid unnecessary maintenance, identify design weaknesses before failure, improve the availability of power production while preventing wind turbines׳ overloading, therefore, maximizing the investments׳ return. In the forthcoming years, a growing interest in SHM technologies for OWT is expected, enhancing the potential of offshore wind farm deployments further offshore. Increasing efficiency in operational management will contribute towards achieving UK׳s 2020 and 2050 targets, through ultimately reducing the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE)

In this paper, we explore the impact of a housing rent inflation cap of 4 per cent on price changes for tenancy
contracts. We assess the implications of the regulations on the share of the market experiencing: 1) a price decline; 2)
unchanged rents (nominal rigidity); 3) a positive growth rate below the cap; 4) the maximum allowable growth; and 5) growth
above the cap. Our identification strategy uses a multinomial logit difference-in-difference approach applied to a novel micro
panel dataset at the property level in Ireland. We find the overall inflation rate fell by 3 percentage points following the
regulations, driven by a reduction in the share of individual contracts pricing above the regulatory maximum. We find an
increase in the likelihood of nominal rigidity at the expense of high-growth rates. However, we also find a higher probability of
small increases, at or below the regulatory level, relative to nominal rigidity after the regulations which is consistent with
landlords trying to maintain real returns as price resets are not allowed between tenancies. Heterogeneous effects by landlord
type and starting rent levels are evident
Efficacy of Different Pet Treat Formulations to Prevent Infestation by the Mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae
The pet food industry is a major part of the high-value processed food market in the USA and worldwide. Pest control associated with pet foods is an important activity. The mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae is a prolific cosmopolitan species that can infests high-value pet treats undetected until the infestations increase to very large numbers. Propylene glycol is a food-safe additive used to prevent mite infestations (Zhang et al., 2018; Abbar et al. 2015). Unfortunately, propylene glycol in certain foods can harm pets, and many companies are changing formulations. Here we conducted forced infestation of mites on three experimental pet treats and compared these to the current product that contains propylene glycol for susceptibility to mite infestation. We confirmed that the current product with propylene glycol did not support any mite population growth after a forced infestation with 20 mites. Two of the test formulations showed promise in preventing mite infestation, but one formulation was clearly susceptible to mites
Optical polarization study in the open cluster NGC 6250
We present (UBVRI) multicolour linear polarimetric data for 32 of the brightest stars in the area of the open cluster NGC 6250, with the aim of studying the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) towards the cluster. Our data yield a mean polarization P¯V = 1.83 per cent, close to the polarization value produced by the ISM with normal efficiency for a mean colour excess of EB−V = 0.37. Our analysis indicates that the observed visual absorption in NGC 6250 is caused by a nearby dust layer (within 300 pc) producing a polarization with an angle close to the Galactic plane (θGP ∼ 38◦). In addition, there are at least two more dust layers along the line of sight between the Sun and the cluster producing a change in the observed polarization, making our results compatible with Neckel and Klare’s results. The observations show differences between the orientation of the local magnetic field of the nearby dust layer and the one that is polarizing along the way to the cluster (θ v = 20◦). The internal dispersion of the polarization values for the members of NGC 6250 seems to be compatible with the presence of intracluster dust. The majority of observed stars do not present evidence of intrinsic polarization in their light. In this work, we also show (as in several previous papers) how polarimetry is an excellent technique for identifying non-member stars.Fil: Feinstein Baigorri, Carlos.
