Multiobjective optimization as a decision aid for managing build-to-order supply chains
This paper provides an overview of multiobjective optimization (MOO) as a decision aid in
build-to-order supply chains (BTO-SC). The main features of BTO-SCs are discussed along
with capabilities of MOO to enhance decision making at different points along the chain.
Key decision points across a typical BTO-SC are identified and potential applications of
MOO are discussed. A sample application is presented and future avenues for further research
highlighted
Stakeholder engagement: Defining strategic advantage for sustainable construction
This is the accepted version of the following article: Rodriguez-Melo, A. and Mansouri, S. A. (2011), Stakeholder Engagement: Defining Strategic Advantage for Sustainable Construction. Bus. Strat. Env., 20: 539â552, which has been published in final form at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/bse.715/abstract.Although sustainable development is increasingly becoming a part of business plans, it is unclear what makes the economic, social and environmental dynamics strategically compatible. This research examines which of the following in sustainable development â government policy, managerial attitude and stakeholder engagement â is the most influential on the profitability of companies in the UK construction sector. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were rendered through a survey and semi-structured interviews. Patterns of ambiguity in legislation were discovered as an obstacle for changing the sector's mind-set. Stakeholder engagement was identified as the defining factor increasing managers' awareness, helping legislation to be effectively implemented and making sustainability highly appealing to clients. These findings indicate that to gain competitive advantage, companies should embark on long-term strategic alliances which adopt the proposals of environmental non-governmental organisations and closely follow public opinion. This, strengthens brand equity, allows for premium pricing, increases market share and maximizes profit
Decision support for build-to-order supply chain management through multiobjective optimization
This paper aims to identify the gaps in decision-making support based on
multiobjective optimization for build-to-order supply chain management (BTOSCM).
To this end, it reviews the literature available on modelling build-to-order
supply chains (BTO-SC) with the focus on adopting multiobjective optimization
(MOO) techniques as a decision support tool. The literature has been classified based
on the nature of the decisions in different part of the supply chain, and the key
decision areas across a typical BTO-SC are discussed in detail. Available software
packages suitable for supporting decision making in BTO supply chains are also
identified and their related solutions are outlined. The gap between the modelling and
optimization techniques developed in the literature and the decision support needed in
practice are highlighted and future research directions to better exploit the decision
support capabilities of MOO are proposed
Equivalence of Darmois-Israel and Distributional-Methods for Thin Shells in General Relativity
A distributional method to solve the Einstein's field equations for thin
shells is formulated. The familiar field equations and jump conditions of
Darmois-Israel formalism are derived. A carefull analysis of the Bianchi
identities shows that, for cases under consideration, they make sense as
distributions and lead to jump conditions of Darmois-Israel formalism.Comment: 17 pages Latex, no figures, to be published in Journ. Math. Phy
The Structure of AdS Black Holes and Chern Simons Theory in 2+1 Dimensions
We study anti-de Sitter black holes in 2+1 dimensions in terms of Chern
Simons gauge theory of anti-de Sitter group coupled to a source. Taking the
source to be an anti-de Sitter state specified by its Casimir invariants, we
show how all the relevant features of the black hole are accounted for. The
requirement that the source be a unitary representation leads to a discrete
tower of states which provide a microscopic model for the black hole.Comment: 17 pages, LaTex. The presentation in Section 5 was improved; other
