The Correlations of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger States Described by Hilbert-Schmidt decomposition
Using simple quantum analysis we describe the correlations of
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states by the use of Hilbert-Schmidt (HS)
representation. Our conclusion is that while these states disprove
local-realism they do not prove any nonlocality property.Comment: to be published in Foundations of Physics Letter
Compact artificial hand
A relatively simple, compact artificial hand, is described which includes hooks pivotally mounted on first frame to move together and apart. The first frame is rotatably mounted on a second frame to enable "turning at the wrist" movement without limitation. The second frame is pivotally mounted on a third frame to permit 'flexing at the wrist' movement. A hook-driving motor is fixed to the second frame but has a shaft that drives a speed reducer on the first frame which, in turn, drives the hooks. A second motor mounted on the second frame, turns a gear on the first frame to rotate the first frame and the hooks thereon. A third motor mounted on the third frame, turns a gear on a second frame to pivot it
Exact Solution for the Metric and the Motion of Two Bodies in (1+1) Dimensional Gravity
We present the exact solution of two-body motion in (1+1) dimensional dilaton
gravity by solving the constraint equations in the canonical formalism. The
determining equation of the Hamiltonian is derived in a transcendental form and
the Hamiltonian is expressed for the system of two identical particles in terms
of the Lambert function. The function has two real branches which join
smoothly onto each other and the Hamiltonian on the principal branch reduces to
the Newtonian limit for small coupling constant. On the other branch the
Hamiltonian yields a new set of motions which can not be understood as
relativistically correcting the Newtonian motion. The explicit trajectory in
the phase space is illustrated for various values of the energy. The
analysis is extended to the case of unequal masses. The full expression of
metric tensor is given and the consistency between the solution of the metric
and the equations of motion is rigorously proved.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, 16 figure
Symmetry Breaking Using Value Precedence
We present a comprehensive study of the use of value precedence constraints
to break value symmetry. We first give a simple encoding of value precedence
into ternary constraints that is both efficient and effective at breaking
symmetry. We then extend value precedence to deal with a number of
generalizations like wreath value and partial interchangeability. We also show
that value precedence is closely related to lexicographical ordering. Finally,
we consider the interaction between value precedence and symmetry breaking
constraints for variable symmetries.Comment: 17th European Conference on Artificial Intelligenc
Diel and seasonal timing of sound production by black drum (Pogonias cromis)
Acoustic recorders were used to document black drum (Pogonias cromis) sound production during their spawning season in southwest Florida. Diel patterns of sound production were similar to those of other sciaenid fishes and demonstrated increased sound levels from the late afternoon to early evening—a period that lasted up to 12 hours during peak season. Peak sound production occurred from January through March when water temperatures were between 18° and 22°C. Seasonal trends in sound production
matched patterns of black drum reproductive readiness and spawning reported previously for populations in the Gulf of Mexico. Total acoustic energy of nightly chorus events was
estimated by integration of the sound pressure amplitude with duration above a threshold based on daytime background levels. Maximum chorus sound level was highly correlated with total acoustic energy and was used to quantitatively represent nightly black drum sound production. This study
gives evidence that long-term passive acoustic recordings can provide information on the timing and location of black drum reproductive behavior that is similar to that provided by traditional, more costly methods. The methods and results have broad application for the study of many other
fish species, including commercially and recreationally valuable reef fishes that produce sound in association with
reproductive beha
Governing dynamics by squeezing in a system of cold trapped ions
We consider a system of laser-cooled ions in a linear harmonic trap and study
the phenomenon of squeezing exchange between their internal and motional
degrees of freedom. An interesting relation between the quantum noise reduction
(squeezing) and the dynamical evolution is found when the internal and motional
subsystems are prepared in properly squeezed (intelligent) states.
Specifically, the evolution of the system is fully governed by the relative
strengths of spectroscopic and motional squeezing, including the phenomenon of
total cancellation of the interaction when the initial squeezing parameters are
equal.Comment: REVTeX, 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
