    Homing orientation in salamanders: A mechanism involving chemical cues

    A detailed description is given of experiments made to determine the senses and chemical cues used by salamanders for homing orientation. Sensory impairment and cue manipulative techniques were used in the investigation. All experiments were carried out at night. Results show that sense impaired animals did not home as readily as those who were blind but retained their sensory mechanism. This fact suggests that the olfactory mechanism is necessary for homing in the salamander. It was determined that after the impaired salamander regenerated its sensory mechanism it too returned home. It was concluded that homing ability in salamanders is direction independent, distant dependent, and vision independent

    Kaela UrquhartThis paper will combine the arts and sciences in such a manner as to address the overwhelming prevalence of suicide in today’s society. An introduction will be given first to present the reader with the barriers of collaboration between the arts and sciences as well as to describe how the author chose to bring about an interdisciplinary perspective through the use of this particular topic of suicide. Next, the performance of the dance component of this Honors Project entitled In Loving Memory will be explained from the importance of the speech to the significance of the story that is told throughout the piece. After which, the paper will shift towards the pre-medical aspect of the project, addressing first how physicians can be more aware of the signs contributing to suicide within their patients. Then, the topic of suicide as a public health issue will be further examined. To finish it all up, a quick overview will be given, hitting the highpoints of this Honors Project and the issues that suicide presents to today’s physicians and society as a whole

    Honeyhive - A Network Intrusion Detection System Framework Utilizing Distributed Internet of Things Honeypot Sensors

    Exploding over the past decade, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices connected to the Internet jumped from 3.8 billion in 2015 to 17.8 billion in 2018. Because so many IoT devices remain upatched, unmonitored, and left on, they have become a tantalizing target for attackers to gain network access or add another device to their botnet. HoneyHive is a framework that uses distributed IoT honeypots as Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) sensors that beacon back to a centralized Command and Control (C2) server. The tests in this experiment involve four types of scans and four levels of active honeypots against the HoneyHive framework and a traditional NIDS on the simulated test network. This research successfully created a framework of distributed network intrusion detection IoT honeypot sensors that capture traffic, create alerts, and beacon back to a central C2 server. The HoneyHive framework successfully detected intrusions that traditional NIDS cannot through the use of distributed IoT honeypot sensors and packet capture aggregation

    The Uncopyrightability of Jokes

    A joke consists of a setup, a premise, and a punch line. It is likely that jokes can be copyrighted under existing laws. However, several facts leave comedians to protect themselves by private means. First, the registration fee for copyright precludes most comedians from registering their jokes. More importantly, this article suggests, the scenes a faire doctrine may prevent comedians from effectively protecting the most important part of jokes the punch line. To make the law more clear, the author recommends a simple addition of jokes to the enumerated list of protected material in the Copyright Acts. Although this change would not resolve all issues, including the relationship of jokes to the scenes a faire doctrine, it would provide a clearer framework for judges to settle such peripheral issues

    Versatile directional searches for gravitational waves with Pulsar Timing Arrays

    By regularly monitoring the most stable millisecond pulsars over many years, pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are positioned to detect and study correlations in the timing behaviour of those pulsars. Gravitational waves (GWs) from supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are an exciting potentially detectable source of such correlations. We describe a straightforward technique by which a PTA can be ‘phased-up’ to form time series of the two polarization modes of GWs coming from a particular direction of the sky. Our technique requires no assumptions regarding the time-domain behaviour of a GW signal. This method has already been used to place stringent bounds on GWs from individual SMBHBs in circular orbits. Here, we describe the methodology and demonstrate the versatility of the technique in searches for a wide variety of GW signals including bursts with unmodelled waveforms. Using the first six years of data from the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array, we conduct an all-sky search for a detectable excess of GW power from any direction. For the lines of sight to several nearby massive galaxy clusters, we carry out a more detailed search for GW bursts with memory, which are distinct signatures of SMBHB mergers. In all cases, we find that the data are consistent with noise

    The Gendered Impacts of Boomtowns: How Financial Dependence, Family, and Victimization Intersect with Hegemonic Masculinity

    Past research on the extraction industry has examined boomtown impacts or challenges primarily related to community cohesion, infrastructure issues and crime. However, few researchers have examined the gendered impacts of boomtowns, particularly as they relate to women. Through in-depth interviews with social service professionals working with women in boomtown settings, this article examines the gendered impacts associated with resource boomtowns. More specifically, this article explores the challenges women face in these hegemonically masculine environments. The research findings show how financial dependence, family impacts and victimization come to shape women’s lives in these settings and intersect with hegemonic masculinity. The article also discusses the implications of having the impacts of boomtowns be gendered
