    Treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in a remote, conflict-affected area of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    The Democratic Republic of Congo is a high-burden country for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Médecins Sans Frontières has supported the Ministry of Health in the conflict-affected region of Shabunda since 1997. In 2006, three patients were diagnosed with drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) and had no options for further treatment. An innovative model was developed to treat these patients despite the remote setting. Key innovations were the devolving of responsibility for treatment to non-TB clinicians remotely supported by a TB specialist, use of simplified monitoring protocols, and a strong focus on addressing stigma to support adherence. Treatment was successfully completed after a median of 24 months. This pilot programme demonstrates that successful treatment for DR-TB is possible on a small scale in remote settings

    Study on feed-in-tariff (FiT) for BIPV system, a Malaysia scenario

    Feed-In Tariff (FiT) was introduced in Malaysia in 2004 and has been undergone many stages to make its implementation in Malaysia successful. The first Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) introduced in Malaysia is Suria 1000 under the supervision of Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (PTM). The aim of this paper was to study the FiT and BIPV implementation in Malaysia. It is observed that Malaysian did not invest in BIPV due to its expensive investment. The FiT Calculator was developed to prove the benefits of FiT in BIPV by practically calculating the investment and profit in the long run which was after 21 years of implementation. FiT Calculator was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 and variable parameter such as the solar irradiation, types of solar panel and inverter were studied to obtain the estimation of power output, the annual income, net income and the payback period of BIPV. Results of all case studies were verified with MBIPV mileage report and the built FiT Calculator has shown up to 96.89% accuracy against the case study done

    Magnetically asymmetric interfaces in a (LaMnO3_3)/(SrMnO3_3) superlattice due to structural asymmetries

    Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements of a ferromagnetic [(LaMnO3_3)11.8_{11.8}/(SrMnO3_3)4.4_{4.4}]6_6 superlattice reveal a modulated magnetic structure with an enhanced magnetization at the interfaces where LaMnO3_3 was deposited on SrMnO3_3 (LMO/SMO). However, the opposite interfaces (SMO/LMO) are found to have a reduced ferromagnetic moment. The magnetic asymmetry arises from the difference in lateral structural roughness of the two interfaces observed via electron microscopy, with strong ferromagnetism present at the interfaces that are atomically smooth over tens of nanometers. This result demonstrates that atomic-scale roughness can destabilize interfacial phases in complex oxide heterostructures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Hierarchical fusion using vector quantization for visualization of hyperspectral images

    Visualization of hyperspectral images that combines the data from multiple sensors is a major challenge due to huge data set. An efficient image fusion could be a primary key step for this task. To make the approach computationally efficient and to accommodate a large number of image bands, we propose a hierarchical fusion based on vector quantization and bilateral filtering. The consecutive image bands in the hyperspectral data cube exhibit a high degree of feature similarity among them due to the contiguous and narrow nature of the hyperspectral sensors. Exploiting this redundancy in the data, we fuse neighboring images at every level of hierarchy. As at the first level, the redundancy between the images is very high we use a powerful compression tool, vector quantization, to fuse each group. From second level onwards, each group is fused using bilateral filtering. While vector quantization removes redundancy, bilateral filter retains even the minor details that exist in individual image. The hierarchical fusion scheme helps in accommodating a large number of hyperspectral image bands. It also facilitates the midband visualization of a subset of the hyperspectral image cube.     Study of absorption loss effects on acoustic wave propagation in shallow water using different empirical models

    Efficient underwater acoustic communication and target locating systems require detailed study of acoustic wave propagation in the sea. Many investigators have studied the absorption of acoustic waves in ocean water and formulated empirical equations such as Thorp's formula, Schulkin and Marsh model and Fisher and Simmons formula. The Fisher and Simmons formula found the effect associated with the relaxation of boric acid on absorption and provided a more detailed form of absorption coefficient which varies with frequency. However, no simulation model has made for the underwater acoustic propagation using these models. This paper reports the comparative study of acoustic wave absorption carried out by means of modeling in MATLAB. The results of simulation have been evaluated using measured data collected at Desaru beach on the eastern shore of Johor in Malaysia. The model has been used to determine sound absorption for given values of depth (D), salinity (S), temperature (T), pH, and acoustic wave transmitter frequency (f). From the results a suitable range, depth and frequency can be found to obtain best propagation link with low absorption loss

    Analysis of Unsteady Squeezing Flow Between Two Porous Plates With Variable Magnetic Field

    Analysis will be made for the non-isothermal Newtonian fuid flow between two unsteady squeezing porous plates under the infuence of variable magnetic feld. The similarity transformations will be used to transform the partial differential equations into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. The modeled nonlinear differential equations representing the flow behavior in the geometry under consideration will be investigated using analytical and numerical method. Comparison of the solutions will be made. Convergence of solution will also be discussed. Flow behavior under the infuence of non-dimensional parameters will be discussed with the help of graphical aids

    We describe certain sufficient conditions for an infinitely divisible probability measure on a class of connected Lie groups to be embeddable in a continuous one-parameter convolution semigroup of probability measures. (Theorem 1.3). This enables us in particular to conclude the embeddability of all infinitely divisible probability measures on certain Lie groups, including the so called Walnut group (Corollary 1.5).     Sustainability of water resources management in the Indus Basin under changing climatic and socio economic conditions

    Pakistan is highly dependent on water resources originating in the mountain sources of the upper Indus for irrigated agriculture which is the mainstay of its economy. Hence any change in available resources through climate change or socio-economic factors could have a serious impact on food security and the environment. In terms of both ratio of withdrawals to runoff and per-capita water availability, Pakistan's water resources are already highly stressed and will become increasingly so with projected population changes. Potential changes to supply through declining reservoir storage, the impact of waterlogging and salinity or over-abstraction of groundwater, or reallocations for environmental remediation of the Indus Delta or to meet domestic demands, will reduce water availability for irrigation. <br><br> The impact of climate change on resources in the Upper Indus is considered in terms of three hydrological regimes – a nival regime dependent on melting of winter snow, a glacial regime, and a rainfall regime dependent on concurrent rainfall. On the basis of historic trends in climate, most notably the decline in summer temperatures, there is no strong evidence in favour of marked reductions in water resources from any of the three regimes. Evidence for changes in trans-Himalayan glacier mass balance is mixed. Sustainability of water resources appears more threatened by socio-economic changes than by climatic trends. Nevertheless, analysis and the understanding of the linkage of climate, glaciology and runoff is still far from complete; recent past climate experience may not provide a reliable guide to the future

    Natural flood management: does age of forest influence flood mitigation?

    Forestry has the potential to alleviate flooding by delaying the downstream passage of flood flows, reducing the volume of runoff through interception (Calder et al. 2003) and promoting rainfall infiltration into the soil (Forest Research, 2010). However, it is difficult to predict how much a forest needs to grow, before there is any significant effect on soil properties to increase the capacity to 1) store water, 2) increase soil infiltration, 3) slow water and reduce water flow connectivity to rivers. The structural coupling between plant roots and soil environment determines flow paths through the soil, where root growth and die-back influences soil hydraulic properties, increasing macropore distribution (Bengough, 2012) and soil permeability. We test the hypothesis: as the forest grows soil permeability below forests will increase, due to increasing macropore structure
