On qpqp-Deformations in Statistical Mechanics of Bosons in D Dimensions

The Bose distribution for a gas of nonrelativistic free bosons is derived in the framework of qpqp-deformed second quantization. Some thermodynamical functions for such a system in D dimensions are derived. Bose-Einstein condensation is discussed in terms of the parameters q and p as well as a parameter ν0\nu_0' which characterizes the representation space of the oscillator algebra.Comment: 15 pages, Latex File, to be published in Symmetry and Structural Properties of Condensed Matter, Eds. An Uqp(u2)U_{qp}(u_2) Rotor Model for Rotational Bands of Superdeformed Nuclei

A nonrigid rotor model is developed from the two-parameter quantum algebra Uqp(u2)U_{qp}({\rm u}_2). [This model presents the Uqp(u2)U_{qp}({\rm u}_2) symmetry and shall be referred to as the qp-rotor model.] A rotational energy formula as well as a qp-deformation of E2 reduced transition probabilities are derived. The qp-rotor model is applied (through fitting procedures) to twenty rotational bands of superdeformed nuclei in the A130A \sim 130, 150 and 190 mass regions. Systematic comparisons between the qp-rotor model and the q-rotor model of Raychev, Roussev and Smirnov, on one hand, and a basic three-parameter model, on the other hand, are performed on energy spectra, on dynamical moments of inertia and on B(E2) values. The physical signification of the deformation parameters q and p is discussed.Comment: 24 pages, Latex File, to appear in IJMP

Life after Welfare: The Economic Well-Being of Women and Children Following an Exit from AFDC

Much previous research has focused on the length of welfare spells and returns to welfare following an exit. Few quantitative studies have looked at broader indicators of the economic well-being of those who have exited AFDC. In this paper we use data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NSLY) to trace welfare use, poverty status, and primary sources of income in the five years following an exit from welfare. We find that while there is a trend toward improved economic status over time, 40 percent of women remain poor five years after exit. Women with more advantaged family backgrounds, those with fewer children, or with more education at exit are more likely to consistently escape poverty. Median income increases over the first five years from about 10,500toabout10,500 to about 15,000 (1992 dollars). Own earnings are the most prevalent income source, followed by spouse's earnings, and mean-tested transfers.

Flight-Measured Aerodynamic Loads on a 0.92 Aspect Ratio Lifting Surface

    Get PDF
Ventral fin loads, expressed as normal force coefficients, bending moment coefficients, and torque coefficients, were measured during flight tests of a YF-12A airplane. Because of the proximity of the ventral fin to the ailerons, the aerodynamic loads presented were the result of both sideslip loads and aileron crossflow loads. Aerodynamic data obtained from strain gage loads instrumentation and some flight pressure measurements are presented for several Mach numbers ranging from 0.70 to 2.00. Selected wind tunnel data and results of linear theoretical aerodynamic calculations are presented for comparison

Erratum: "Post-T Tauri Stars in the Nearest OB Association" (AJ, 124, 1670 [2002])

A few typos in Mamajek, Meyer, & Liebert (2002, AJ, 124, 1670) have been corrected in this erratum (including two stellar misidentifications and an incorrect power in the units of a slope). The most significant is the correction of a sign error in the published polynomial conversion between Tycho and Johnson-Cousins (B-V) colors.Comment: 1 page, to appear in April 2006 Astronomical Journa

The use of oil for in-flight flow visualization

    Get PDF
Oil was used to visualize inflight aerodynamic characteristics such as boundary layer transition, shock wave location, regions of separated flow, and surface flow direction. The technique, which is similar to wind tunnel oil-flow testing, involves an oil mixture to test aircraft before takeoff. After takeoff, the airplane climbs immediately to the test altitude and photographs are taken. The developmental experience is summarized, several examples of inflight oil-flow photographs are presented and discussed, and an approach for potential users of the technique is presented
