Variability of black hole accretion discs: The cool, thermal disc component
We extend the model of King et al. (2004) for variability in black hole
accretion discs, by taking proper account of the thermal properties of the
disc. Because the degree of variability in the King et al. (2004) model depends
sensitively on the ratio of disc thickness to radius, H/R, it is important to
follow the time-dependence of the local disc structure as the variability
proceeds. In common with previous authors, we develop a one-zone model for the
local disc structure. We agree that radial heat advection plays an important
role in determining the inner disc structure, and also find limit-cycle
behaviour. When the stochastic magnetic dynamo model of King et al. (2004) is
added to these models, we find similar variability behaviour to before.
We are now better placed to put physical constraints on model parameters. In
particular, we find that in order to be consistent with the low degree of
variability seen in the thermal disc component of black hole binaries, we need
to limit the energy density of the poloidal field that can be produced by local
dynamo cells in the disc to less than a few percent of the energy density of

BACKGROUND:
Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), is one of the most burdensome medical conditions. Usually, the reviews that aim at calculating the prevalence of dementia include estimates from studies without assessing their methodological quality. Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) proposed a score to assess the methodological quality of population-based studies aimed at estimating the prevalence of dementia. During the last three years, the European Commission has funded three projects (Eurodem, EuroCoDe, and ALCOVE) in order to estimate the prevalence of dementia in Europe.
OBJECTIVE:
The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of data on the prevalence of dementia in Europe derived from studies that included only subjects with a diagnosis of dementia according to the DSM IV criteria, and that had a high quality score according to ADI criteria.
METHODS:
We considered the studies selected by the two projects EuroCoDe (1993-2007) and Alcove (2008-2011), and we performed a new bibliographic search. For the systematic review, we only selected the subset of articles that included subjects with a diagnosis of dementia according to the DSM IV criteria. The studies were qualitatively assessed using the ADI tool.
RESULTS:
The meta-analysis considered 9 studies that were carried out in Europe between 1993 and 2018 including a total of 18,263 participants, of which 2,137 were diagnosed with dementia. The prevalence rate standardized for age and sex resulted 7.1%.
DISCUSSION:
This is the first systematic review on the prevalence of dementia in Europe considering only high-quality studies adopting the same diagnostic criteria (i.e., DSM IV)
Luminescent and Scintillating Properties of Lanthanum Fluoride Nanocrystals in Response to Gamma/Neutron Irradiation: Codoping with Ce Activator, Yb Wavelength Shifter, and Gd Neutron Captor
A novel concept for detection and spectroscopy of gamma rays, and detection
of thermal neutrons based on codoped lanthanum fluoride nanocrystals containing
gadolinium is presented.The trends of colloidal synthesis of the mentioned
material, LaF3 co-doped with Ce as the activator, Yb as the wavelength-shifter
and Gd as the neutron captor, is reported. Nanocrystals of the mentioned
material were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray
diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), optical
absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Gamma detection and its
potential spectroscopy feature have been confirmed. The neutron detection
capability has been confirmed by experiments performed using a 252Cf neutron

Virial series for inhomogeneous fluids applied to the Lennard-Jones wall-fluid surface tension at planar and curved walls
We formulate a straightforward scheme of statistical mechanics for
inhomogeneous systems that includes the virial series in powers of the activity
for the grand free energy and density distributions. There, cluster integrals
formulated for inhomogeneous systems play a main role. We center on second
order terms that were analyzed in the case of hard-wall confinement, focusing
in planar, spherical and cylindrical walls. Further analysis was devoted to the
Lennard-Jones system and its generalization the 2k-k potential. For this
interaction potentials the second cluster integral was evaluated analytically.
We obtained the fluid-substrate surface tension at second order for the planar,
spherical and cylindrical confinement. Spherical and cylindrical cases were
analyzed using a series expansion in the radius including higher order terms.
We detected a dependence of the surface tension for the
standard Lennard-Jones system confined by spherical and cylindrical walls, no
matter if particles are inside or outside of the hard-walls. The analysis was
extended to bending and Gaussian curvatures, where exact expressions were also
