The Effect of Auditory Cues on the Bowling Performance of the Visually Handicapped
The present investigation was conducted to study the effect of an auditory cue on the bowling performance of visually handicapped students. The sample consisted of thirty visually handicapped subjects (fifteen congenital and fifteen acquired). Subjects were randomly assigned to a sequence of bowling tasks. The task involved bowling with and without an audible goal locater. It was hypothesized that the utilization of the audible goal locater would significantly improve the bowling performance of visually handicapped students. This study further investigated the relationship between onset of visual impairment and bowling performance. Based on statistical analysis the hypothesis was supported. It was found that bowling performance was significantly superior with the utilization of the audible goal locater than without for both acquired and congenitally visually handicapped students. Further, bowling performance of the acquired visually handicapped was significantly superior to the bowling performance of the congenitally visually handicapped with and without the audible goal locater. It was concluded that the utilization of the audible goal locater can increase bowling performance of the visually handicapped
The economic impact of climate change in Namibia. How climate change will affect the contribution of Namibia’s natural resources to its economy
The IPCC recognises Africa as a whole to be “one of the most vulnerable continents to climate variability and change because of multiple stresses and low adaptive capacity. Climate change is likely to exacerbate the dry conditions already experienced in southern Africa. And when rainfall does come, it is likely to be more intense, leading to erosion and flood damage. This will affect the poor most, with resulting constraints on employment opportunities and declining wages. But at present these predictions gain little policy traction in southern African countries. The multilateral climate change process is complicated and slow, and policymakers often see serious action on climate change as a domestic ‘vote loser’. One way to raise climate change concerns further up the policymakers’ agenda is to try to put an economic value on the environmental impacts of climate change. Figures that provide a clear message about the expected impact of climate change will be powerful motivators for policymakers in developing countries to start considering climate change as a part of their national development policies. This study is a first attempt to provide some economic indicators of how climate change will affect Namibia – one of the most vulnerable countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on natural resources, the study aims to assess the likely economic values of some of the most important environmental and socio-economic impacts of climate change in Namibia, and also to capture how some of the most important impacts might affect the overall structure of the economy.Climate change, Economics, Namibia, Environmental Economics and Policy,
The ethical infrastructure of legal practice in larger law firms: values, policy and behaviour
The article examines the impact of the cultures and organisational structures of large law firms on individual lawyers' ethics. The paper suggests that large law firms in Australia should consciously design and implement 'ethical infrastructures' to both counteract pressures for misbehaviour and positively promote ethical behaviour and discussion. The paper goes on to explain what implementing ethical infrastructures in law firms could and should mean by reference to what Australian law firms are already doing and US innovations in this area. Finally, the paper warns that the 'ethical infrastructure' of a firm should not be seen merely as the formal ethics policies explicitly enunciated by management. Formal and legalistic ethical infrastructures that fail to support or encourage the development of individual lawyers' awareness oftheir own ethical values and ethical judgment in practice will be useless
A Petunia homeodomain-leucine zipper protein, PhHD-Zip, plays an important role in flower senescence.
Flower senescence is initiated by developmental and environmental signals, and regulated by gene transcription. A homeodomain-leucine zipper transcription factor, PhHD-Zip, is up-regulated during petunia flower senescence. Virus-induced gene silencing of PhHD-Zip extended flower life by 20% both in unpollinated and pollinated flowers. Silencing PhHD-Zip also dramatically reduced ethylene production and the abundance of transcripts of genes involved in ethylene (ACS, ACO), and ABA (NCED) biosynthesis. Abundance of transcripts of senescence-related genes (SAG12, SAG29) was also dramatically reduced in the silenced flowers. Over-expression of PhHD-Zip accelerated petunia flower senescence. Furthermore, PhHD-Zip transcript abundance in petunia flowers was increased by application of hormones (ethylene, ABA) and abiotic stresses (dehydration, NaCl and cold). Our results suggest that PhHD-Zip plays an important role in regulating petunia flower senescence

Soybean and Soyfood Consumption Increase Oxalate Excretion
Eight healthy adults with no prior history of kidney stones participated in eight oxalate (Ox) load tests, seven foods, and an Ox solution control. After correction for endogenous Ox synthesis, increases in urinary Ox excretion during the 8 hours after eating one meal of the two soybean lines and five soyfoods tested ranged from 19.6 ± 23.3 to 124 ± 156 mmol (1.7 ± 2.1 to 10.9 ± 13.8 mg). Thus, frequent consumption of soybeans and soy products (TVP, soynuts, soy beverage, and tofu) may be a risk factor for CaOx kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals, such as those with a prior history of Ca stones, high normal urinary Ox concentrations, or intestinal disease
Oxalate and Phytate of Soy Foods
The consumption of foods made from soybeans is increasing because of their desirable nutritional value. However, some soy foods contain high concentrations of oxalate and/or phytate. Oxalate is a component of calcium oxalate kidney stones, whereas phytate is an inhibitor of calcium kidney stone formation. Thirty tested commercial soy foods exhibited ranges of 0.02−2.06 mg oxalate/g and 0.80−18.79 mg phytate/g. Commercial soy foods contained 2−58 mg of total oxalate per serving and 76−528 mg phytate per serving. Eighteen of 19 tofu brands and two soymilk brands contained less than 10 mg oxalate per serving, defined as a low oxalate food. Soy flour, textured vegetable soy protein, vegetable soybeans, soy nuts, tempeh, and soynut butter exhibited greater than 10 mg per serving. The correlation between oxalate and phytate in the soy foods was significant (r = 0.71, P \u3c 0.001) indicating that oxalate-rich soy foods also contain higher concentrations of phytate. There also was a significant correlation, based on molar basis, between the divalent ion binding potential of oxalate plus phytate and calcium plus magnesium (r = 0.90, P \u3c 0.001) in soy foods. Soy foods containing small concentrations of oxalate and moderate concentrations of phytate may be advantageous for kidney stone patients or persons with a high risk of kidney stones
