Star cluster disruption in the starburst galaxy Messier 82
Using high-resolution, multiple-passband Hubble Space Telescope images
spanning the entire optical/near-infrared wavelength range, we obtained a
statistically complete sample, -band selected sample of 846 extended star
clusters across the disk of the nearby starburst galaxy M82. Based on careful
analysis of their spectral energy distributions, we determined their
galaxy-wide age and mass distributions. The M82 clusters exhibit three clear
peaks in their age distribution, thus defining a relatively young, log(t/yr) <
7.5, an intermediate-age, log(t/yr) [7.5, 8.5], and an old sample,
log(t/yr) > 8.5. Comparison of the completeness-corrected mass distributions
offers a firm handle on the galaxy's star cluster disruption history. The most
massive star clusters in the young and old samples are (almost) all
concentrated in the most densely populated central region, while the
intermediate-age sample's most massive clusters are more spatially dispersed,
which may reflect the distribution of the highest-density gas throughout the
galaxy's evolutionary history, combined with the solid-body nature of the
galaxy's central region.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 online-only data tables; ApJS, in pres
Comparison of cosmological models using standard rulers and candles
In this paper, we used standard rulers and standard candles (separately and
jointly) to explore five popular dark energy models under assumption of spatial
flatness of the Universe. As standard rulers, we used a data set comprising 118
galactic-scale strong lensing systems (individual standard rulers if properly
calibrated for the mass density profile) combined with BAO diagnostics
(statistical standard ruler). Supernovae Ia served asstandard candles. Unlike
in the most of previous statistical studies involving strong lensing systems,
we relaxed the assumption of singular isothermal sphere (SIS) in favor of its
generalization: the power-law mass density profile. Therefore, along with
cosmological model parameters we fitted the power law index and its first
derivative with respect to the redshift (thus allowing for mass density profile
evolution). It turned out that the best fitted parameters are in
agreement with each other irrespective of the cosmological model considered.
This demonstrates that galactic strong lensing systems may provide a
complementary probe to test the properties of dark energy. Fits for
cosmological model parameters which we obtained are in agreement with
alternative studies performed by the others. Because standard rulers and
standard candles have different parameter degeneracies, combination of standard
rulers and standard candles gives much more restrictive results for
cosmological parameters. At last, we attempted at model selection based on
information theoretic criteria (AIC and BIC). Our results support the claim,
that cosmological constant model is still the best one and there is no (at
least statistical) reason to prefer any other more complex model.Comment: 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in RA
The Status and Prospects of Community Education Workers in China
Professionalization, career development prospects, and social value are the three basic components of the status and prospects of community education workers, which influence their choice to continue their careers or not. In China, these problems are complex and lacking in systematic research, and the current situation does not meet the needs of community education. This study interviewed 24 community workers regarding their salaries, working conditions, and training and career advancement opportunities to evaluate this situation in Ningbo City. The findings highlight challenges in the evaluation processes and work motivations of community education workers, including teams without professional knowledge, lack of training opportunities, unsupportive policies, and low salaries. These findings can be used by governments and community workers to find collaborative ways to facilitate community education processes, including the provision of adult education for community educators. New legal policies to raise the status of community educators are also suggested
