A Du Boisian Approach: How Does Double Consciousness Manifest in the Experiences of Black Males in an Urban Teacher Preparation Program

The Black experience is complex; often portrayed as a double consciousness or a tension between two warring ideas that penetrate the soul. Such duplicity can leave Black people perplexed regarding how to navigate in a White world with one dark body. This study explored the experiences of Black males in an urban teacher preparation program as they negotiated their double consciousness in order to understand how race and gender impact teaching and learning in urban schools. Four case studies were conducted representing self-identified Black male graduates who were part of a cohort of pre-service teachers. Data generated from coursework were used as a heuristic for introspective analysis by each participant and complemented by semi-structured interviews. The study illustrates the complex factors for Black males developing as culturally relevant responsive teachers and provides voice to the challenges Black males face while navigating in a capitalistic system that has historically denied equitable access. The research found that prior experiences with double consciousness perpetuate Black malesÔÇÖ oppression and forces them to see their perceived selves through their White counterpartsÔÇÖ and supervisorsÔÇÖ eyes. Double consciousness has a twoness that causes distrustfulness of those that are perceived to be oppressive while also inspires individuals to ÔÇśbe the bestÔÇÖ. Cohort communities are a great way to facilitate a community of learners but if not managed carefully can lead to racial and ethnic separation. After graduating from the teacher preparation program, the Black males did not remain consistent with their cultural responsiveness but were charged to use the teaching profession as a means to create positive change for others. Findings from this study hold promise for helping teacher education programs develop experiences for Black males that capture and cultivate the unique embodiment of two clashing identitiesÔÇöAmerican and Black

Ab initio free energy of vacancy formation and mass-action kinetics in vis-active TiO2

    Get PDF
Recent reports have identified bulk defects such as oxygen vacancies as key players in visible-light photoactive TiO2. This would imply greater visible light absorption rates may be possible provided effective defect engineering can be achieved. To further this we have developed methods to simulate vacancy formation in bulk TiO2 using ab initio techniques. Initial results of these methods show an entropic reduction in the free energy of vacancy formation of 2.3 eV over a range of 266 K. The use of this result is illustrated by a 'toy' mass-action kinetics model which offers insight into vacancy concentration, rate constants, and enthalpy of reaction

Waste-to-Watts: An Energy Analysis of Municipal Solid Waste as Fuel

    Get PDF
Across the United States, there are two pressing problems: garbage disposal and electricity generation. Firstly, the infrastructure in place doesnÔÇÖt properly dispose of or reuse municipal solid waste. In addition, power insecurity is becoming more prominent as power grids are becoming outdated. This project aims to provide an alternative solution for both issues by using a Brayton cycle based waste-to-energy incinerator. The overall system efficiency relies heavily on the feedstock used for incineration. One way efficiency can be increased is through pelletizing trash, ensuring an even burn profile, providing the correct amount of feedstock, and ensuring adequate energy production. However, knowledge of the energy level per feedstock amount is needed. This project aims to use the money that was awarded to be able to purchase and test various feedstock: polypropylene, polyethylene, and mixed-wood pellets, as well as shredded packing paper. The testing uses a calorimeter to measure the amount of energy that is stored in each feedstock material. The data gained can provide information necessary for calculating the amount of electricity per specified volume of the above-mentioned materials. The first stage of this project involved gathering energy contents of the pure substances listed above through research papers. In the next few weeks, we will be continuing with our own experimentation that examines the energy released when combusting combinations of these substances. Our goal is to gather calorimetry data for the pelletized and shredded material listed above. The data will be used to design the waste-to-energy incinerator

Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a CD30 + lymphoproliferative disorder that may manifest with skin involvement.1 We present a rare case of Agent Orange-induced ALCL with cutaneous involvement of the hand, surgical excision, and follow-up treatment

Introduction. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2015 neurological disorders accounted for 12% of total deaths worldwide. Presented data demonstrates that neurological neuropsychiatric disorders (NND) cause a substantial burden on global health. A majority of neurological disorders are progressive and currently have no cure.Aim. Is to evaluate current evidence of a middle range theory of Symptom Management Theory (SMT) created by University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing and to analyze implication of the theory for persons with NND.Material and Methods. Systematic review of the literature will be presented. SMT will be analyzed and evaluated based on Walker and Avant with special consideration to theory utilization in research encompassing NND. Study quality was assessed using the Quality Index (QI) checklist developed by Downs & Black in 1998.Results. A total of seven articles was included to support empirical relationships between SMT components evidenced in studies involving adults with neurological disorders/diseases. Overall, the literature supports SMT as a theoretical framework for symptoms management for persons with neurological disorders/diseases.Conclusions. The SMT is still in experimental stages. Analysis of the SMT proved that the theory is parsimonious, logical in its adequacy and may be generalized to other studies. This review created a solid beginning to explore recommendations to promote standards for symptom management in future investigations of NND. Further research is needed involving measurement of symptoms of multidimensional symptom management with persons with NND.
