    Evaluation of usefulness of Skylab EREP S-190 and S-192 imagery in multistage forest surveys

    The author has identified the following significant results. The digital timber volume prediction system was tested with another test area in the Trinity Alps. The estimated gain in precision was somewhat lower than the estimate for the first test area (35%). A combined interpretation of the two areas was made, yielding an estimated gain of 44%, with high statistical significance. This interpretation was used to calibrate the system for an interpretation of 43 primary sample units distributed over 1600 square miles. Preliminary results indicate that a gain of 35% can be realized over this large area in northern California

    Multiresource analysis and information system concepts for incorporating LANDSAT and GIS technology into large area forest surveys

    A method of relating different classifications at each stage of a multistage, multiresource inventory using remotely sensed imagery is discussed. A class transformation matrix allowing the conversion of a set of proportions at one stage, to a set of proportions at the subsequent stage through use of a linear model, is described. The technique was tested by applying it to Kershaw County, South Carolina. Unsupervised LANDSAT spectral classifications were correlated with interpretations of land use aerial photography, the correlations employed to estimate land use classifications using the linear model, and the land use proportions used to stratify current annual increment (CAI) field plot data to obtain a total CAI for the county. The estimate differed by 1% from the published figure for land use. Potential sediment loss and a variety of land use classifications were also obtained

    Beyond just talking strategy: using gaming simulations to catalyze airline managers' buy-in to novel strategies that can shape or adapt to profit cyclicality

    This empirical qualitative study explores the role of gaming simulations in catalyzing changes to organization-wide management’s perspectives on a novel strategy for aircraft orders and retirements. A large US airline developed the new strategy to tackle the pervasive problem of profit cyclicality, driving poor average profit performance across the cycle. Based on the dynamic model used to develop the strategy with senior management, a gaming simulation workshop was designed and delivered in groups of 20 to over 200 organization-wide managers. They tested various strategies for aircraft orders and retirements, under scenarios for market demand and conduct for competitors and regulators. A qualitative methodology was used to capture the workshop participants’ perspectives on the efficacy of various capacity strategies, before, during and after the workshop. The findings are that managers experiment risk-free with innovations in strategies for capacity orders and retirements and they do indeed discover for themselves that there are counterintuitive alternatives that can achieve large and stable profitable growth. These strategies depend on competitors (role-played by workshops participants in the simulation) cooperating to create a win-win equilibrium. Performance far exceeds the industry benchmark profit cycle. The contribution is the empirical evidence of the effectiveness of gaming simulations to catalyze managers’ shared beliefs and buy-in to a new strategy or business model. There are implications for practitioners in airlines and other sectors on the use of a gaming simulation workshop toolset, to help create such buy-in for an emerging strategy or business model. Protocols for best practice gaming simulation workshop design are discussed

    Methods of space radiation dose analysis with applications to manned space systems

    The full potential of state-of-the-art space radiation dose analysis for manned missions has not been exploited. Point doses have been overemphasized, and the critical dose to the bone marrow has been only crudely approximated, despite the existence of detailed man models and computer codes for dose integration in complex geometries. The method presented makes it practical to account for the geometrical detail of the astronaut as well as the vehicle. Discussed are the major assumptions involved and the concept of applying the results of detailed proton dose analysis to the real-time interpretation of on-board dosimetric measurements

    The author has identified the following significant results. The RMSE of point location achieved with the annotation system on S190A imagery was 100 m and 90 m in the x and y direction, respectively. Potential gains in sampling precision attributable to space derived imagery ranged from 4.9 to 43.3 percent depending on the image type, interpretation method, time of year, and sampling method applied. Seasonal variation was significant. S190A products obtained in September yielded higher gains than those obtained in June. Using 100 primary sample units as a base under simple random sampling, the revenue made available for incorporating space acquired data into the sample design to estimate timber volume was as high as $39,400.00

    The U wave in atrial fibrillation

    The U wave in ECGs of patients is difficult to observe because it is hidden under the atrial fibrillatory wave. Measurement and characteristics of the U wave in atrial fibrillation have not previously been described. Beat averaging was used to reveal the U waves in 12-lead ECGs of 8 patients with atrial fibrillation taking account of heart rate dependency of U wave characteristics. U wave polarity and amplitude in 12-lead ECG and the amplitude ratio of U wave to atrial fibrillatory wave in lead VI were measured. U waves were measureable in all patients. U waves were predominantly positive in leads 1. 11. aVF. V2. V3, V4, V5 and V6, negative in leads aVR. Amplitudes were largest in the precordial leads measuring up to 55 fJ V. In lead VI the U wave amplitude was on average 0.17 (range 0.1 to 0.4) times the amplitude of the atrial fibrillatory wave. U waves can be measured by ventricular beat averaging in AF patients. U waves were normal in this small group of patients

    A Personalized System for Conversational Recommendations

    Searching for and making decisions about information is becoming increasingly difficult as the amount of information and number of choices increases. Recommendation systems help users find items of interest of a particular type, such as movies or restaurants, but are still somewhat awkward to use. Our solution is to take advantage of the complementary strengths of personalized recommendation systems and dialogue systems, creating personalized aides. We present a system -- the Adaptive Place Advisor -- that treats item selection as an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item attributes and the user responding. Individual, long-term user preferences are unobtrusively obtained in the course of normal recommendation dialogues and used to direct future conversations with the same user. We present a novel user model that influences both item search and the questions asked during a conversation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in significantly reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory item, as compared to a control group of users interacting with a non-adaptive version of the system

    Precision annotation of predetermined primary sampling units on ERTS-1 MSS images

    Resectioning programs were developed for projecting the boundary corners of sample units, management units, and counties into U2 RC-10 and ERTS-1 MSS images. The technique used includes corrections for earth curvature, terrain elevation, and MSS distortions. The minimum standard error obtained was about 0.15 mm or 150 meters on the ground. This technique now makes it possible to include land ownership as an integral part of forest resource sampling plans using ERTS imagery

    The author has identified the following significant results. A unique digital timber volume estimation system was developed for use with the MSS CCT tapes. The system was tested on a 64-square mile area in Northern California's Trinity Alps. The outcome of a systematic experiment, in which several possible combinations of bands 5 and 7 and a contrast measure were tried, showed that an estimated gain in precision of 50% can be obtained in a multistage sampling design. The difference between bands 5 and 7 proved to be of special importance for the estimation of biomass in the form of timber volume. In addition, an interpretation model for high flight U2 photographs was developed. A maximum multiple correlation coefficient of 0.74 was obtained for the regression model, explaining 55% of the variation in timber volume as estimated from aerial photos and ground measurments.     Erythema nodosum as a result of estrogen patch therapy for prostate cancer: a case report.

    © 2015 Coyle et al.Introduction: Erythema nodosum is often associated with a distressing symptomatology, including painful subcutaneous nodules, polyarthropathy, and significant fatigue. Whilst it is a well-documented side-effect of estrogen therapy in females, we describe what we believe to be the first report in the literature of erythema nodosum as a result of estrogen therapy in a male. Case presentation: A 64-year-old Afro-Caribbean man with locally advanced carcinoma of the prostate agreed to participate in a randomized controlled trial comparing estrogen patches with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs to achieve androgen deprivation, and was allocated to the group receiving estrogen patches. One month later he presented with tender lesions on his shins and painful swelling of his ankles, wrists, and left shoulder. This was followed by progressive severe fatigue that required hospital admission, where he was diagnosed with erythema nodosum by a rheumatologist. Two months after discontinuing the estrogen patches the erythema nodosum, and associated symptoms, had fully resolved, and to date he remains well with no further recurrence. Conclusion: Trial results may establish transdermal estrogen as an alternative to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs in the management of prostate cancer, and has already been established as a therapy for male to female transsexuals. It is essential to record the toxicity profile of transdermal estrogen in men to ensure accurate safety information. This case report highlights a previously undocumented toxicity of estrogen therapy in men, of which oncologists, urologists, and endocrinologists need to be aware. Rheumatologists and dermatologists should add estrogen therapy to their differential diagnosis of men presenting with erythema nodosum
