Die beplanningsproses en ruimtelike analise in stedelike gebiede: 'n Kritiese kommentaar oor enkele aspekte van die Suid-Afrikaanse praktyk
Town planning relates to procedures in which choices are made on the construction of urban space. As a professional field, it can therefore be regarded as a "... process of identifying and analyzing problems and exploring and assessing options open to an urban community in the pursuit of general goals and specific land development goals" (Chapin & Kaiser, 1979: 63 ). Town planning includes in this regard the preparation, determination and implementation of spatial policy within the framework of a spatial planning process. In the modern planning approach there is a rational cyclical planning process (Roberts, 1974: 33-40).*This article is written in Afrikaans
The Bel Composto in Gian Lorenzo Bernini\u27s Cornaro Chapel
Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sculptural altarpiece, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, in the Cornaro Chapel of the Roman Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria (1652), is regarded as the pinnacle of Baroque “theatricality” in Bernini’s use of the bel composto, or unification of the arts. In this thesis, I argue Bernini’s representation of the mystical event referred to the Counter-Reformation’s canonization process due to the artist’s profound engagement with Teresa’s controversial autobiography, El Libro de la Vida (1562-5). Bernini presented the patron of the chapel and other esteemed members of the Cornaro family as witnesses who authorized her mystical experience. Through the bel composto and visual constructs influenced by theatrical elements, the audience is persuaded to mirror the appropriate behavior of the Cornaro family, who act as both performance and audience members
Repetition Priming and Melody : Implicit Memory for Music
The present study investigated the existence of repetition priming for melody and the extent to which that priming would be affected by the manipulation of frequency. A group of 62 university students and 2 members of the public listened to 20 high frequency and 20 low frequency melodies in the first phase of a repetition priming experiment. Participants were required to name as many melodies as they could as quickly as possible. The same melodies were then re-presented immediately in the second phase of the experiment along with another group of 40 melodies matched in frequency to those in the first phase, and participants were required to perform the same task. Mean reaction times were measured for each melody\u27 across participants and repetition priming differences were calculated by comparing phase 2 reaction times for melodies presented only in the second phase (‘new’ melodies) with those presented in both phases (\u27old\u27 melodies). Mean percent correct responses were also computed and comparisons made between all four phase 2 conditions based on frequency and presentation. Reaction times demonstrated a significantly faster and more accurate performance for old\u27 than for \u27new’ melodies in the second phase. Priming differences between ‘old\u27 and new’ melodies were also compared as a function of frequency, and there was some suggestion in the data of greater priming for low than for high frequency melodies. The findings of the study generally echo those found in lexical decision experiments performed with words. Although there clearly are differences in the mental processing of music compared to language, the results of the experiment provide support for the argument that the principles that govern cognition for language also apply to cognition for music
Acquirer Shareholder Value Creation in United States Mergers & Acquisitions
Mergers and acquisitions remain the primary corporate growth strategy for executives around the world. While deals continue to rise in popularity, their success in generating value for participating firms remain uncertain. A vast majority of merger and acquisition research focuses on this disparity and considers whether they create or destroy value for stakeholders. In this thesis, I examine the value generated to shareholders by US acquisitions and mergers announced between 2005 and 2009. Utilizing the event study methodology, I evaluate cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) for acquiring firms to analyze the wealth effects of merger and acquisition announcements. CAR is a direct measure of the change in shareholder wealth resulting from an event because CAR represent the difference between the return conditional on the event and the expected return. I find that acquiring firm shareholders realized average cumulative abnormal returns of - 1.572% during a five-day event window centered around the event announcement, and -3.905% during a two-month event window. Furthermore, when distinguishing the characteristics of deals that impact the returns to shareholders, transaction value has a statistically significant negative correlation with CAR. The results of this thesis support previous literature findings that the returns to shareholders of the acquiring firms are often not significant and sometimes negative

The measurement of residential sprawl in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area
Residential development in large parts of the Johannesburg metropolitan area is characterized by sprawl conditions. A simulation model was utilized to indicate the extent of future sprawl. Multiple regression and Monte Carlo simulation were used to fore cast residential growth to the year 2005. A sprawl index was developed to measure and compare sprawl situations under alternative planning strategies. This index formulates that sprawl is dependent on distance from the built boundary, distance to the dominant work place and dwelling unit density. Simulations show that sprawl will decrease when the overall density is increased, development is concentrated along major transport corridors and incentives are used to attract development to slowly expanding areas.
Interactive Map for caENTI - Application of the Web Mapping Technology.
International audienceGeographical information systems (GIS) are becoming a common tool in applications that involve spatial objects and relations. In the last years the internet technology is moving GIS towards web based applications, simplifying the interaction between users and GIS, and at the same time reducing the ownership and maintenance costs. In the framework of caENTI we are developing a Web Mapping solution to present selected socio-economic indicators of European Union in the form of Interactive map. Indicators will be presented in different levels of detail (from NUTS0 to LAU2). In the time of writing this article Interactive map is still in development phase. The development software has been already selected and tested. However the selection and processing of data and metadata is still not completed. Map built on Web Mapping software GeoServer and JavaScriptbased web applications (including the Map Tools library OpenLayers) are in the final stages of development
