A Preliminary Assessment of Mental Health Needs Faced in Religious Leaders in Eastern Europe

Enormous sociopolitical changes in Eastern Europe in the last decade have had a profound impact on the psychological functioning of the citizens of these nations. In order to assess and intervene in the mental health realm in Eastern Europe, a brief survey was sent to various Christian leaders in Eastern Europe. Common mental health problems identified across the various Eastern European countries and cultures include depression, relationship difficulties, alcohol abuse, and anxiety disorders. Christians in Eastern Europe tend to turn to family and friends for help with these problems first, pastors second, and almost never to mental health professionals. Clergy and laypersons have little training in mental health issues. A promising direction for future service is training those who can, in turn, train Eastern European laypersons in basic listening and support skills. Cultural awareness and sensitivity will be of paramount importance in such an endeavor

A note on ADCP-based indirect observations of turbulence

A 70-day data set from bottom-mounted ADCPs on the two sides of the Faroe-Bank Channel was analysed using the recorded flow variance and echo intensity in the deeper reaches of the passage as proxies for turbulence. A consistent picture emerged, not least since the data losses (which were ascribed to turbulence-induced activation of the fish-elimination option in the ADCP software) could be shown to co-vary with the internal M-2 tide affecting the vertical shear, which in turn proved to be correlated with the flow variance

At the request of the Concerned Citizens for Lake Township (CCLT), Bennett & Williams, Environmental Consultants, Inc. were asked to again revisit the Uniontown Industrial Excess Landfill (IEL) Superfund site, located in Uniontown, Ohio. Bennett & Williams (B&W) first began evaluating this site in the early 1990s, has been involved in three court actions concerning the site, and drafted the Lake Township Comments on the Existing Public Record (1999) which was submitted on behalf of the Township to the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Bennett & Williams were also asked to review the Low Flow sampling techniques undertaken at the site from 1998 through 2001. Finally, they were also asked to review the list of wells that were abandoned in the summer of 2004 to determine is the justifications given for the abandonment were valid and to recommend if any of the wells (well nests) need to be replaced. This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.
