Restricted risk measures and robust optimization

In this paper we consider characterizations of the robust uncertainty sets associated with coherent and distortion risk measures. In this context we show that if we are willing to enforce the coherent or distortion axioms only on random variables that are affine or linear functions of the vector of random parameters, we may consider some new variants of the uncertainty sets determined by the classical characterizations. We also show that in the finite probability case these variants are simple transformations of the classical sets. Finally we present results of computational experiments that suggest that the risk measures associated with these new uncertainty sets can help mitigate estimation errors of the Conditional Value-at-Risk. Gregory Bateson: un pensamiento (complejo) para pensar la complejidad. Un intento de lectura/escritura terapéutica

El artículo nos ofrece una mirada al hombre y a su vasto espectro del pensamiento, asumiendo la dificultad de intentar ‘atrapar’ el núcleo duro del proyecto bensoniano. Bateson es un personaje que transrecorrió disciplinas -comunicación, etnología y antropología, psiquiatría/psicología, genética, filosofía, biología, zoología, etología y etiología, cibernética- instalándose en lo que él llama la historia natural de las ideas o ecología de la mente. El presente artículo expone un apronte a este vasto pensamiento Batesoniano, y en particular su epistemología para el cambio cultural.L’article nous offre un regard sur l’homme et sur l’amplitude de sa pensée, assumant toute la difficulté qui consiste à tenter de “capter” le noyau dure du projet bensonien. Bateson est un personnage qui a traversé les disciplines – communication, ethnologie et anthropologie, psychiatrie/psychologie, génétique, philosophie, biologie, zoologie, éthologie et étiologie, cybernétique – en se plaçant dans ce que lui-même nomme l’histoire naturelle des idées ou écologie de l’esprit. A framework for adaptive open-pit mining planning under geological uncertainty

Mine planning optimization aims at maximizing the profit obtained from extracting valuable ore. Beyond its theoretical complexity-the open-pit mining problem with capacity constraints reduces to a knapsack problem with precedence constraints, which is NP-hard-practical instances of the problem usually involve a large to very large number of decision variables, typically of the order of millions for large mines. Additionally, any comprehensive approach to mine planning ought to consider the underlying geostatistical uncertainty as only limited information obtained from drill hole samples of the mineral is initially available. In this regard, as blocks are extracted sequentially, information about the ore grades of blocks yet to be extracted changes based on the blocks that have already been mined. Thus, the problem lies in the class of multi-period large scale stochastic optimization problems with decision-dependent information uncertainty. Such problems are exceedingly hard to solve, so approximations are required. This paper presents an adaptive optimization scheme for multi-period production scheduling in open-pit mining under geological uncertainty that allows us to solve practical instances of the problem. Our approach is based on a rolling-horizon adaptive optimization framework that learns from new information that becomes available as blocks are mined. By considering the evolution of geostatistical uncertainty, the proposed optimization framework produces an operational policy that reduces the risk of the production schedule. Potencial vulnerabilidad frente a inundaciones de los establecimientos de salud públicos de cuatro regiones del norte del Perú.

Con el objetivo de determinar la potencial vulnerabilidad de los establecimientos de salud públicos de cuatro regiones del norte del Perú ante los posibles efectos del fenómeno El Niño, se realizó un análisis espacial exploratorio con los puntos georreferenciados de las zonas de riesgos por activación de quebradas, reportadas por la Autoridad Nacional del Agua, y los establecimientos de salud públicos del Ministerio de Salud. Se identificaron establecimientos de salud cercanos a puntos de riesgo que podrían ser afectados ante la presencia del fenómeno El Niño

A Monetary Theory with Non-Degenerate Distributions

Dispersion of money balances among individuals is the basis for a range of policies but it has been abstracted from in monetary theory for tractability reasons. In this paper, we fill in this gap by constructing a tractable search model of money with a non-degenerate distribution of money holdings. We assume search to be directed in the sense that buyers know the terms of trade before visiting particular sellers. Directed search makes the monetary steady state block recursive in the sense that individuals’ policy functions, value functions and the market tightness function are all independent of the distribution of individuals over money balances, although the distribution affects the aggregate activity by itself. Block recursivity enables us to characterize the equilibrium analytically. By adapting lattice-theoretic techniques, we characterize individuals’ policy and value functions, and show that these functions satisfy the standard conditions of optimization. Ante la pérdida del asombro, las benzodiasepinas no bastan

Yo quisiera hablar de Salud Mental desde un lugar bastante inusual: quiero referirme a este tema desde un espacio disciplinario que –si bien es cierto se encuentra muy vinculado al tema– no es habitual que se pronuncie al respecto. Mi mirada a la Salud Mental se realiza desde la Comunicación. Yo trabajo en Comunicación Social y sostengo que una observación desde allí sobre la Salud Mental no sólo no es trivial sino más bien fundamental. Si entendemos Salud Mental en una acepción bastante amplia, la mirada desde una disciplina o desde una práctica (como uno podría entender la comunicación) que instala su observación en los tramados relacionales es absolutamente pertinente. Porque en términos sociales los deterioros de la Salud Mental de un conglomerado humano cualquiera, no son sino “malos” modos relacionales en su interior. Y ello no quiere decir otra cosa que redes sociales “enfermas” en dicho conglomerado humano. Y la Comunicación, entendida como disciplina, es precisamente el estudio de las relaciones de cualquier orden. Entonces para mi es claro: no me interesa la salud mental en términos de esquizofrenias individuales, consumo de benzodiasepinas o cosas por el estilo, sino fundamentalmente en términos de interacciones al interior de un espacio humano determinado. ¿Qué sucede con la interacción al interior de nuestros espacios sociales…? ¿Qué está sucediendo con nuestra sociabilidad cotidiana…? Esas son entonces mis preguntas y de ello pretendo hablar…
