CO observations of the expanding envelope of IRC plus 10216
High-sensitivity emission profiles were observed for the transition of C12O16 and C13O16 towards IRC + or - 10216. It appears that the spherically symmetric uniform mass-outflow model proposed by Morris is necessary to describe the line profiles. The outflow appears to be slightly accelerated, having a velocity of 15 km/sec at the edges of the CO cloud, compared with 12 km/sec for the more centrally confined molecules
The Close Binary Fraction of Dwarf M Stars
We describe a search for close spectroscopic dwarf M star binaries using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to address the question of the rate of occurrence of multiplicity in M dwarfs. We use a template-fitting technique to measure radial velocities from 145,888 individual spectra obtained for a magnitude-limited sample of 39,543 M dwarfs. Typically, the three or four spectra observed for each star are separated in time by less than four hours, but for ~17% of the stars, the individual observations span more than two days. In these cases we are sensitive to large-amplitude radial velocity variations on timescales comparable to the separation between the observations. We use a control sample of objects having observations taken within a four-hour period to make an empirical estimate of the underlying radial velocity error distribution and simulate our detection efficiency for a wide range of binary star systems. We find the frequency of binaries among the dwarf M stars with a < 0.4 AU to be 3%-4%. Comparison with other samples of binary stars demonstrates that the close binary fraction, like the total binary fraction, is an increasing function of primary mass
Active clearance control system for a turbomachine
An axial compressor is provided with a cooling air manifold surrounding a portion of the shroud, and means for bleeding air from the compressor to the manifold for selectively flowing it in a modulating manner axially along the outer side of the stator/shroud to cool and shrink it during steady state operating conditions so as to obtain minimum shroud/rotor clearance conditions. Provision is also made to selectively divert the flow of cooling air from the manifold during transient periods of operation so as to alter the thermal growth or shrink rate of the stator/shroud and result in adequate clearance with the compressor rotor
Considerations in the design of large space structures
Several analytical studies of topics relevant to the design of large space structures are presented. Topics covered are: the types and quantitative evaluation of the disturbances to which large Earth-oriented microwave reflectors would be subjected and the resulting attitude errors of such spacecraft; the influence of errors in the structural geometry of the performance of radiofrequency antennas; the effect of creasing on the flatness of tensioned reflector membrane surface; and an analysis of the statistics of damage to truss-type structures due to meteoroids
Intergalactic HI in the NGC5018 group
The cold interstellar and intergalactic medium is in the small group of galaxies whose brightest member is the elliptical galaxy NGC5018. Researchers' attention was first drawn to this galaxy as possibly containing cold interstellar gas by the detection by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) of emission at lambda 60 microns and lambda 100 microns at an intensity of about 1 Jy (Knapp et al. 1989), which is relatively strong for an elliptical (Jura et al. 1987). These data showed that the temperature of the infrared emission is less than 30K and that its likely source is therefore interstellar dust. A preliminary search for neutral hydrogen (HI) emission from this galaxy using the Very Large Array (VLA) showed that there appears to be HI flowing between NGC5018 and the nearby Sc galaxy NGC5022 (Kim et al. 1988). Since NGC5018 has a well-developed system of optical shells (cf. Malin and Carter 1983; Schweizer 1987) this observation suggests that NGC5018 may be in the process of forming its shell system by the merger of a cold stellar system with the elliptical, as suggested by Quinn (1984). Researchers describe follow-up HI observations of improved sensitivity and spatial resolution, and confirm that HI is flowing between NCG5022 and NGC5018, and around NGC5018. The data show, however, that the HI bridge actually connects NGC5022 and another spiral in the group, MCG03-34-013, both spatially and in radial velocity, and that in doing so it flows through and around NGC5018, which lies between the spiral galaxies. This is shown by the total HI map, with the optical positions of the above three galaxies labelled
Relative Abundance and Distribution of Sand Seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) in Relation to Environmental Conditions, Habitat, and River Discharge in Two Florida Estuaries
The sand seatrout, Cynoscion arenarius (Ginsburg, 1930), is an abundant recreational and commercial species that resides primarily in the nearshore and estuarine waters of the Gulf of Mexico. We examined relative abundance and distribution of sand seatrout [individuals \u3e100 mm standard length (SL)] in relation to environmental conditions and river discharge in the Tampa Bay (1997-2004) and Charlotte Harbor (1999-2004) estuaries on the west coast of Florida. Fish were collected during a long-term fisheries-independent monitoring program with a 183-m purse seine. Sand seatrout were most abundant over deep, muddy substrates devoid of seagrass. Smaller sand seatrout between145 mm SL and 175 mm SL were found in low-salinity areas near river mouths and larger sand seatrout \u3e 175 mm SL were found in high-salinity areas in the lower portion of the estuaries. We found a negative relationship between relative abundance and mean river discharge in both estuaries and a positive relationship between relative abundance and 2-yr lagged river discharge in Tampa Bay. Annual relative abundance of sand seatrout captured via purse seine in Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor was significantly correlated to annual changes in recreational and commercial harvest on the west coast of Florida. Differences and changes in environmental conditions, habitat, and river discharge clearly affected the relative abundance and distribution of sand seatrout, making habitat alterations and water-allocation decisions important to sand seatrout and the fishery they support
Ag on Ge(111): 2D X-ray structure analysis of the (Wurzel)3 x (Wurzel)3 superstructure
We have studied the Ag/Ge(111)(Wurzel)3 x (Wurzel)3 superstructure by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. In our structural analysis we find striking similarities to the geometry of Au on Si(111). The Ag atoms form trimer clusters with an Ag-Ag distance of 2.94+-0.04°A with the centers of the trimers being located at the origins of the (Wurzel)3 x (Wurzel)3 lattice. The Ag layer is incomplete and at least one substrate layer is distorted
