    Solar Power Plant Detection on Multi-Spectral Satellite Imagery using Weakly-Supervised CNN with Feedback Features and m-PCNN Fusion

    Most of the traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) implements bottom-up approach (feed-forward) for image classifications. However, many scientific studies demonstrate that visual perception in primates rely on both bottom-up and top-down connections. Therefore, in this work, we propose a CNN network with feedback structure for Solar power plant detection on middle-resolution satellite images. To express the strength of the top-down connections, we introduce feedback CNN network (FB-Net) to a baseline CNN model used for solar power plant classification on multi-spectral satellite data. Moreover, we introduce a method to improve class activation mapping (CAM) to our FB-Net, which takes advantage of multi-channel pulse coupled neural network (m-PCNN) for weakly-supervised localization of the solar power plants from the features of proposed FB-Net. For the proposed FB-Net CAM with m-PCNN, experimental results demonstrated promising results on both solar-power plant image classification and detection task.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, 4 table

    Association of ADRB2 polymorphism with triglyceride levels in Tongans

    BackgroundOur previous study demonstrated that the A-allele of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs34623097 located in the upstream region of the β2 adrenergic receptor gene (ADRB2) is significantly associated with risk for obesity in Oceanic populations.MethodsTo investigate whether the ADRB2 polymorphisms explain part of the individual differences in lipid mobilization, energy expenditure and glycogen breakdown, the associations of 10 ADRB2 SNPs with total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were examined in 128 adults in Tonga.ResultsA multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, and body mass index revealed that rs34623097 was significantly associated with triglyceride levels (P-value = 0.037). A copy of the rs34623097-A allele increased serum triglyceride levels by 70.1 mg/dL (0.791 mmol/L). None of the ADRB2 SNPs showed a significant association with total-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.ConclusionsIn a Tongan population, a SNP located in the upstream region of ADRB2 is associated with triglyceride levels independent of body mass index

    A replication study confirmed the EDAR gene to be a major contributor to population differentiation regarding head hair thickness in Asia

    Hair morphology is a highly divergent phenotype among human populations. We recently reported that a nonsynonymous SNP in the ectodysplasin A receptor (EDAR 1540T/C) is associated with head hair fiber thickness in an ethnic group in Thailand (Thai-Mai) and an Indonesian population. However, these Southeast Asian populations are genetically and geographically close, and thus the genetic contribution of EDAR to hair morphological variation in the other Asian populations has remained unclear. In this study, we examined the association of 1540T/C with hair morphology in a Japanese population (Northeast Asian). As observed in our previous study, 1540T/C showed a significant association with hair cross-sectional area (P = 2.7 × 10−6) in Japanese. When all populations (Thai-Mai, Indonesian, and Japanese) were combined, the association of 1540T/C was stronger (P = 3.8 × 10−10) than those of age, sex, and population. These results indicate that EDAR is the genetic determinant of hair thickness as well as a strong contributor to hair fiber thickness variation among Asian populations

    The Human SDF1 Gene Polymorphism Is Located on a Mutational Hot Spot that Was Identified by the Hominoid Genome Study

    Nucleotide sequences of a part of the stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) gene 3´ untranslated region were studied among hominoids (chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and gibbons). An identical sequence to the human SDF1-3´G allele was found in chimpanzees and gibbons, whereas that to the 3´A allele was found in gorillas. Based on the sequence data and the hominoid phylogenetic relation, it was suggested that an adenine nucleotide at nucleotide position (np) 801 in humans and gorillas was independently introduced into each lineage after the specific divergence and an ancestral hominoid sequence of this site (np 799-802) was deduced as CCGG. The present data showing a mutational hot spot on this site suggest the possible presence of multiple origins of the worldwide distribution of the SDF1-3´A allele in humans.論文http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_650

To approach this issue, we investigated genome-wide chromatin behavior under various transcriptional conditions in living human cells using single-nucleosome imaging. While transcription by RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) is generally thought to need more open and dynamic chromatin, surprisingly, we found that active RNAPII globally constrains chromatin movements. RNAPII inhibition or its rapid depletion released the chromatin constraints and increased chromatin dynamics. Perturbation experiments of P-TEFb clusters, which are associated with active RNAPII, had similar results. Furthermore, chromatin mobility also increased in resting G0 cells and UV-irradiated cells, which are transcriptionally less active. Our results demonstrated that chromatin is globally stabilized by loose connections through active RNAPII, which is compatible with models of classical transcription factories or liquid droplet formation of transcription-related factors. Together with our computational modeling, we propose the existence of loose chromatin domain networks for various intra-/interchromosomal contacts via active RNAPII clusters/droplets.We thank Dr. Y.     Analysis of Surgical Outcomes of Diverticular Disease of the Colon

    We analyzed retrospectively the surgical outcomes of diverticular diseases of the colon at the surgical division of Fukuyama Medical Center. Data were collected from 39 patients who underwent surgery for diverticular disease at Fukuyama Medical Center. Thirty-nine patients were admitted between 2005 and 2010. The mean age of the 39 patients was 63.6 years. The collected data included patient demographics, patient history, type of surgery and complications. Patients were divided into 2 groups, Elective vs. Emergent group, right vs. left colon group and laparotomy vs. laparoscopic approach. Multivariate analysis of the logistic model of morbidity revealed a significantly higher rate in the left colon and the Cox proportional hazards model clearly showed fewer postoperative hospital days with the laparoscopic approach. Surgical procedures should be decided in reference to the particular clinical and pathological features of diverticular disease to gain an acceptable morbidity and mortality rates

    A case of transverse colon cancer with remarkable extramural invasion to stomach and jejunum

    A 77-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to abdominal pain and body weight loss. A palpable mass the size of an infant's head was tender on palpation and identified as an epigastric lesion. Colonoscopic examination revealed stenosis of the transverse colon, although no intraluminal growth of the tumor was found. The histologic findings of the biopsy material were poorly differentiated and/or undifferentiated cells. Abdominal CT scan showed an irregular-shaped tumor with a diameter of 10cm invading the stomach and jejunum. We performed an operation under a diagnosis of extramurally growing cancer or malignant lymphoma of the colon. Partial resection of the transverse colon was done by distal gastrectomy and partial resection of the jejunum. Histologic examination of the operative specimens revealed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon, prominently proliferating into the surrounding tissues. The finding of a long stenotic lesion and extramural compression by colonography are characteristic of this tumor, based on a review of 43 literature reports in Japan
