Phase Shifts of the Circadian Locomotor Rhythm Induced by Pigment-Dispersing Factor in the Cricket Gryllus bimaculatus

    Get PDF
Pigment-dispersing factors (PDFs) are octadeca-peptides widely distributed in insect optic lobes and brain. In this study, we have purified PDF and determined its amino acid sequence in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus. Its primary structure was NSEIINSLLGLPKVLNDA-NH2, homologous to other PDH family members so far reported. When injected into the optic lobe of experimentally blinded adult male crickets, Gryllus-PDF induced phase shifts in their activity rhythms in a phase dependent and dose dependent manner. The resulted phase response curve (PRC) showed delays during the late subjective night to early subjective day and advances during the mid subjective day to mid subjective night. The PRC was different in shape from those for light, serotonin and temperature. These results suggest that PDF plays a role in phase regulation of the circadian clock through a separate pathway from those of other known phase regulating agents

Five-state molecular switching of a [3]rotaxane in response to weak and strong acid and base stimuli

    Get PDF
This communication describes the base- and acid-induced fivestate translational isomerization of a [3]rotaxane containing two pairs of N-arylamine and N-alkylamine centers as binding sites for two dibenzo[24]crown-8 components. Gradual molecular shuttling of this [3]rotaxane is achieved in response to both the amount and strength of the added acid or base.othe

Crystalline structure of TiC ultrathin layers formed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by chemical reaction from Ti/graphite system

    Get PDF
We have investigated the atomic-scale reaction between a Ti thin layer and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) mainly by scanning tunneling microscopy. A deposited Ti layer shows an epitaxial orientation structure on a HOPG substrate even in room-temperature deposition, while the bonding between Ti and HOPG is very weak. The chemical reaction between Ti and HOPG takes place, and epitaxial TiC domains on HOPG are formed for annealing at above 600 °C. The TiC domains shows a smooth surface corresponding to the TiC(111) plane after annealing at 700 °C. The formation of TiC(001) facets and significant surface roughening of not only TiC but also HOPG substrates are observed for annealing at as high as 900 °C.journal articl

Dynamical Excimer Formation in Rigid Carbazolophane via Charge Transfer State

    Get PDF
Formation dynamics of intramolecular excimer in dioxa[3.3](3, 6)carbazolophane (CzOCz) was studied by time-resolved spectroscopic methods and computational calculations. In the ground state, the most stable conformer in CzOCz is the anti-conformation where two carbazole rings are in antiparallel alignment. No other isomers were observed even after the solution was heated up to 150 °C, although three characteristic isomers were found by the molecular mechanics calculation: the first is the anti-conformer, the second is the syn-conformer where two carbazole rings are stacked in the same direction, and the third is the int-conformer where two carbazole rings are aligned in an edge-to-face geometry. Because of the anti-conformation, the interchromophoric interaction in CzOCz is negligible in the ground state. Nonetheless, the intramolecular excimer in CzOCz was dynamically formed in an acetonitrile (MeCN) solution, indicating strong interchromophoric interaction and the isomerization from the anti- to syn-conformation in the excited state. The excimer formation in CzOCz is more efficient in polar solvents than in less polar solvents, suggesting the contribution of the charge transfer (CT) state to the excimer formation. The stabilization in the excited state is discussed in terms of molecular orbital interaction between two carbazole rings. The solvent-polarity-induced excimer formation is discussed in terms of the CT character in the int-conformation

Ontrolled release of guest molecules from cyclodextrin inclusion complexes treated at ultra-high pressure

    Get PDF
This study dealt with the conformational change in cyclodextrin inclusion complexes by treatjng at ultra-high pressure. Menthol, camphor and limonene were employed as guests with different molecular sizes and cyclodextrin was used as a host. The ultra-high pressure, more than 100 MPa, was applied to the inclusion complex in water. After the pressure treatment, guest was released from the cyclodextrin cavity with decreased rate. Infrared spectra were measured for the inclusion complexes after ultra-high pressure treatment. Peak intensity for C-H stretching of methyl group at 2958 and 2870 cm-I decreased relatively to the intensity for C-H stretching of methylene group at 2928 and 2853 cm-I, though no mechanochemical reaction was recognized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy after the pressure treatment. The results show that conformation of inclusion complex changed to reduce the CH3 vibration by treating at ultra-high pressure.research repor

Logarithmic transcript-ratios of secreted frizzled-related protein 5(SFRP5),lipocalin2(LC2) andPPAR γ(PR), expressing in the thymus of mouse, were measured with aging by realtime PCR method.LogPR/SFRP5 and logPR/LC2 tended to increase for several weeks after birth and then became constan practically. Rate theory was applied to adipocyte-differential model, and rate constants were determined for theprocesses, where SFRP5- and LC2-transcribing cells differentiated into PR-transcribing cells. It was concludedthat SFRP5 was transcribed firstly, then LC2 in the process where stem cells differentiated into preadipocytes
