    Jamming transition in a highly dense granular system under vertical vibration

    The dynamics of the jamming transition in a three-dimensional granular system under vertical vibration is studied using diffusing-wave spectroscopy. When the maximum acceleration of the external vibration is large, the granular system behaves like a fluid, with the dynamic correlation function G(t) relaxing rapidly. As the acceleration of vibration approaches the gravitational acceleration g, the relaxation of G(t) slows down dramatically, and eventually stops. Thus the system undergoes a phase transition and behaves like a solid. Near the transition point, we find that the structural relaxation shows a stretched exponential behavior. This behavior is analogous to the behavior of supercooled liquids close to the glass transition.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev.

    Determinants of the subscription to bundled services and their effect on customer retention in the Korean communications sector

    Since bundlesprovide price discountsto customers and have lock-in effects forbusinessesin the communicationssector, the number of bundlesubscribersisrapidly growing in many countries,including Korea.The consumerwelfareand marketing effects of bundleshavebeen welldocumented. Existing literature, however,has paid little attention to identifyingthe facets of benefitsand risks that influence subscriptions, the differences in switching costs between subscribers and non-subscribers, and the relationships among bundle satisfaction, customerretention, and switching costs. To address these gaps, we performed an empirical analysis using survey data from 550 individuals.Our findingsshow that concernabout lock-inand performanceas well as economicbenefits influencesubscriptionsto the bundles, switching costs arehigher for thesubscribersthan for stand-alone service users, and monetary switching costsof bundlesdirectly affect customer retention. These results show the lock-in effectsofswitching costsof bundlesin subscribers’ decision-making, retention, and churn. The implications for regulatory policyand customer strategyare discussed

    A comparison of the clinical outcomes of patients with invasive lobular carcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast according to molecular subtype in a Korean population

    BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and the survival outcomes of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) patients compared to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) patients according to their molecular subtype. METHODS: We compared the clinicopathological characteristics, breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) between patients with IDC (n = 14,547) and ILC (n = 528). RESULTS: The ILC presented with a larger tumor size, more advanced cancer stage, increased rate of hormonal receptor positivity, human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) negativity and mastectomy than the IDC. The ILC patients more frequently presented with the luminal A subtype, whereas the IDC patients more frequently presented with the luminal B, HER2-overexpression, or triple negative subtype. The BCSS and OS were not significantly different between the IDC and ILC for each molecular subtype. CONCLUSIONS: Similar to IDC patients, molecular subtype should be considered when determining the prognosis and treatment regimen for ILC patients

    Impacts of Heavy Rain and Typhoon on Allergic Disease

    AbstractObjectivesAllergic disease may be increased by climate change. Recent reports have shown that typhoon and heavy rain increase allergic disease locally by concentration of airborne allergens of pollen, ozone, and fungus, which are causes of allergic disease. The objective of this study was to determine whether typhoon and heavy rain increase allergic disease in Korea.MethodsThis study included allergic disease patients of the area declared as a special disaster zone due to storms and heavy rains from 2003 to 2009. The study used information from the Korea Meteorological Administration, and from the National Health Insurance Service for allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis).ResultsDuring a storm period, the numbers of allergy rhinitis and atopic dermatitis outpatients increased [rate ratio (RR) = 1.191; range, 1.150–1.232] on the sixth lag day. However, the number of asthma outpatients decreased (RR = 0.900; range, 0.862–0.937) on the sixth lag day after a disaster period. During a storm period, the numbers of allergic rhinitis outpatients (RR = 1.075; range, 1.018–1.132) and atopy outpatients increased (RR = 1.134; range, 1.113–1.155) on the seventh lag day. However, the number of asthma outpatients decreased to RR value of 0.968 (range, 0.902–1.035) on the fifth lag day.ConclusionThis study suggests that typhoon and heavy rain increase allergic disease apart from asthma. More study is needed to explain the decrease in asthma
