Sloth: America\u27s Ironic Structural Vice
Individualism is a popular cultural trope in the United States, often touted for its promotion of industriousness and rejection of laziness. This essay argues that, ironically, America\u27s brand of individualism actually promotes a more fundamental form of the very vice it purports to oppose. To make this case, the essay defines the unique form of individualism in the United States and then retrieves the classical definition of sloth as a vice against charity (not diligence), contrasting Aquinas and Barth with Weber to demonstrate that this peculiarly American individualist impulse undermines civic charity by reaping the benefits of civic relationships while denying any concomitant responsibilities. Identifying this narrative of individualism as a structural vice, the essay proposes structural remedies for reinvigorating civic charity, solidarity, and the common good in the United States
Do Stock Prices Really Reflect Fundamental Values? The Case of REITs
Real estate investment trust (REIT) stock prices deviate substantially from net asset values (NAV). Using REIT data since 1990, we find large positive excess returns to a strategy of buying stocks that trade at a discount to NAV, and shorting stocks trading at a premium to NAV. Estimated alphas from this strategy are between 0.9% and 1.8% per month, with little risk. Trading costs and short-sale constraints are not prohibitive and the results strengthen when we control for differences in liquidity or the extent of institutional ownership. We find that some variation in P/NAV makes sense, as premiums are positively related to recent and future NAV growth. However, there appears to be too much volatility in P/NAV, giving rise to potential profits from short-term mean reversion. The closed-end fund literature has some similar findings on stock price deviations from fundamental value, but compared to closed-end funds REITs are much larger and have much higher insider and institutional ownership. These differences suggest that REIT premiums and discounts reflect more than just small investor sentiment, which is a common explanation of why closed-end fund prices deviate from their fundamental value.
Value Focused Thinking Approach Using Multivariate Validation for Junior Enlisted Performance Reporting in the United States Air Force
From United States Air Force (USAF) doctrine, Air Force Instruction 1-1 lists three purposes for the USAF Enlisted Evaluation System. The first purpose is to provide feedback to individuals on how well they are meeting expectations. The second purpose is to provide a cumulative record of performance and potential based on observations. The third purpose is to identify the best qualified personnel. However, current Air Force leadership has expressed a need to revamp the enlisted appraisal process, requesting consistency in identifying the best performers, reduction in ratings inflation, and better delineation between ?near peer? performers. This research proposes utilizing Value-Focused Thinking to perform junior enlisted performance reports, to better align with Air Force doctrine and values. Moreover, the multivariate Management Science techniques of Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis are applied to statistically validate the accuracy and defensibility of the design. Finally, Artificial Neural Networks are employed to showcase the classification accuracy of the proposed system. In addition to providing consistency, inflation reduction, and delineation during appraisals, this research advocates the use of a web-based design to reduce administrative demands and to provide query capability of appraisal data to the Air Force Personnel Center for trend and force management decisions
A sex difference in the context-sensitivity of dominance perceptions
Although dominance perceptions are thought to be important for effective social interaction, their primary function is unclear. One possibility is that they simply function to identify individuals who are capable of inflicting substantial physical harm, so that the perceiver can respond to them in ways that maximize their own physical safety. Another possibility is that they are more specialized, functioning primarily to facilitate effective direct (i.e., violent) intrasexual competition for mates, particularly among men. Here we used a priming paradigm to investigate these two possibilities. Facial cues of dominance were more salient to women after they had been primed with images of angry men, a manipulation known to activate particularly strong self-protection motivations, than after they had been primed with images of angry women or smiling individuals of either sex. By contrast, dominance cues were more salient to men after they had been primed with images of women than when they had been primed with images of men (regardless of the emotional expressions displayed), a manipulation previously shown to alter men's impressions of the sex ratio of the local population. Thus, men's dominance perceptions appear to be specialized for effective direct competition for mates, while women's dominance perceptions may function to maximize their physical safety more generally. Together, our results suggest that men's and women's dominance perceptions show different patterns of context-sensitivity and, potentially, shed new light on the routes through which violence and intrasexual competition have shaped dominance perceptions
A polymer coated cicaprost-eluting stent increases neointima formation and impairs vessel function in the rabbit iliac artery
Drug-eluting stents have been successful in reducing in-stent restenosis but are not suitable for all lesion types and have been implicated in causing late stent thrombosis due to incomplete regeneration of the endothelial cell layer. In this study we implanted stents coated with cicaprost, a prostacyclin analogue with a long plasma half-life and antiproliferative effects on vascular smooth muscle cells, into the iliac arteries of rabbits. At 28-day follow-up we compared neointima formation within the stented vessels and vascular function in adjacent vessels, to assess if cicaprost could reduce restenosis without impairing vessel function. Arteries implanted with cicaprost eluting stents had significantly more neointima compared to bare metal stents. In adjacent segments of artery, endothelium-dependent relaxation was impaired by the cicaprost-eluting stent but vasodilation to an endothelium-independent vasodilator was maintained. We conclude that the presence of the polymer and sub-optimal release of cicaprost from the stent may be responsible for the increased neointma and impaired functional recovery of the endothelium observed. Further experiments should be aimed at optimising release of cicaprost and exploring different stent polymer coatings
Sensemaking the Small Business Credit Crunch: The Network of Recession and Barriers to Recovery
In this paper we use Critical Sensemaking and Actor-Network Theory to apply business anthropology to the lending of money to small business, the financial crisis, the recession and possible recovery. A plausible link between fear of becoming a lender who made a substantial mistake (as the mortgage lenders pre-2008 have been characterized) and unwillingness to lend is described. Statistical evidence of low levels of lending has been interrelated with extensive narrative and discourse analysis of the text of small business persons, entrepreneurs, lenders, pundits and reports on the economic crisis. A theory of prospective sensemaking is described from the actions of bank officers and the surrounding discourse
Natural Coronagraphic Observations of the Eclipsing T Tauri System KH 15D: Evidence for Accretion and Bipolar Outflow in a WTTS
We present high resolution (R 44,000) UVES spectra of the eclipsing
pre-main sequence star KH 15D covering the wavelength range 4780 to 6810 {\AA}
obtained at three phases: out of eclipse, near minimum light and during egress.
The system evidently acts like a natural coronagraph, enhancing the contrast
relative to the continuum of hydrogen and forbidden emission lines during
eclipse. At maximum light the H equivalent width was 2 {\AA} and
the profile showed broad wings and a deep central absorption. During egress the
equivalent width was much higher (70 {\AA}) and the broad wings, which
extend to 300 km/s, were prominent. During eclipse totality the
equivalent width was less than during egress (40 {\AA}) and the high
velocity wings were much weaker. H showed a somewhat different behavior,
revealing only the blue-shifted portion of the high velocity component during
eclipse and egress. [OI] 6300, 6363 lines are easily seen both
out of eclipse and when the photosphere is obscured and exhibit little or no
flux variation with eclipse phase. Our interpretation is that KH 15D, although
clearly a weak-line T Tauri star by the usual criteria, is still accreting
matter from a circumstellar disk, and has a well-collimated bipolar jet. As the
knife-edge of the occulting matter passes across the close stellar environment
it is evidently revealing structure in the magnetosphere of this pre-main
sequence star with unprecedented spatial resolution. We also show that there is
only a small, perhaps marginally significant, change in the velocity of the K7
star between the maximum light and egress phases probed here
The 5'-3' exoribonuclease Pacman (Xrn1) regulates expression of the heat shock protein Hsp67Bc and the microRNA miR-277-3p in Drosophila wing imaginal discs
Pacman/Xrn1 is a highly conserved exoribonuclease known to play a critical role in gene regulatory events such as control of mRNA stability, RNA interference and regulation via miRNAs. Although Pacman has been well studied in Drosophila tissue culture cells, the biologically relevant cellular pathways controlled by Pacman in natural tissues are unknown. This study shows that a hypomorphic mutation in pacman (pcm5) results in smaller wing imaginal discs. These tissues, found in the larva, are known to grow and differentiate to form wing and thorax structures in the adult fly. Using microarray analysis, followed by quantitative RT-PCR, we show that eight mRNAs were increased in level by >2 fold in the pcm5 mutant wing discs compared to the control. The levels of pre mRNAs were tested for five of these mRNAs; four did not increase in the pcm5 mutant, showing that they are regulated at the post-transcriptional level and therefore could be directly affected by Pacman. These transcripts include one that encodes the heat-shock protein Hsp67Bc, which is upregulated 11.9-fold at the post-transcriptional level and 2.3-fold at the protein level. One miRNA, miR-277-3p, is 5.6-fold downregulated at the post-transcriptional level in mutant discs, suggesting that Pacman affects its processing in this tissue. Together, these data show that a relatively small number of mRNAs and miRNAs substantially change in abundance in pacman mutant wing imaginal discs. Since Hsp67Bc is known to regulate autophagy and protein synthesis, it is possible that Pacman may control the growth of wing imaginal discs by regulating these processes
