A Data Acquisition System (DAS) for marine and ecological research from aerospace technology
The efforts of researchers at Mississippi State University to utilize space-age technology in the development of a self-contained, portable data acquisition system for use in marine and ecological research are presented. The compact, lightweight data acquisition system is capable of recording 14 variables in its present configuration and is suitable for use in either a boat, pickup truck, or light aircraft. This system will provide the acquisition of reliable data on the structure of the environment and the effect of man-made and natural activities on the observed phenomenon. Utilizing both self-contained analog recording and a telemetry transmitter for real-time digital readout and recording, the prototype system has undergone extensive testing

Optical and X-ray Variability in The Least Luminous AGN, NGC4395
We report the detection of optical and X-ray variability in the least
luminous known Seyfert galaxy, NGC4395. The featureless continuum changed by a
factor of 2 in 6 months, which is typical of more luminous AGN. The largest
variation was seen at shorter wavelengths, so that the spectrum becomes
`harder' during higher activity states. In a one week optical broad band
monitoring program, a 20% change was seen between successive nights. In a 1
month period the spectral shape changed from a power law with spectral index
alpha ~0 (characteristic of quasars) to a spectral index alpha ~2 (as observed
in other dwarf AGN). ROSAT HRI and PSPC archive data show a variable X-ray
source coincident with the galactic nucleus. A change in X-ray flux by a factor
\~2 in 15 days has been observed. When compared with more luminous AGN, NGC4395
appears to be very X-ray quiet. The hardness ratio obtained from the PSPC data
suggests that the spectrum could be absorbed. We also report the discovery of
weak CaIIK absorption, suggesting the presence of a young stellar cluster
providing of the order of 10% of the blue light. Using HST UV archive data,
together with the optical and X-ray observations, we examine the spectral
energy distribution for NGC4395 and discuss the physical conditions implied by
the nuclear activity under the standard AGN model. The observations can be
explained by either an accreting massive black hole emitting at about 10^(-3)
L_(Edd) or by a single old compact SNR with an age of 50 to 500 yr generated by
a small nuclear starburst.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, to appear in MNRA
A New Marine Ascomycete from Australia
Most marine pyrenomycetes are lignicolous, but some are epiphytic on marine phanerogims and algae. Meyers (1957) listed 30 species of algae known to be attacked by these fungi. A number of reports dealing with marine ascomycetes on algal hosts appeared before 1900, the most noteworthy being those of Winter (1887), and Jones (1898). Cotton (1908) described a pyrenomycete on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and summarized previous reports of ascomycetes found on algae. Reed (1902) collected two species, and Sutherland, in a series of papers (1914-1916), reported several alga-infesting pyrenomycetes. More recently, a number of ascomycetes occurring on algae have been noted (Feldmann, 1957, 1958; Cribb & Herbert, 1954; Cribb & Cribb, 1955, 1960a, b; Wilson & Knoyle, 1961; Kohlmeyer, 1963). This report describes a heretofore unreported pyrenomycete collected from the marine alga, Ballia callitricha Ag. The material was obtained from Warrnambool, Victoria, in waters off southern Australia
Measures and models for angular correlation and angular-linear correlation
Population models for dependence between two angular measurements and for dependence between an angular and a linear observation are proposed. The method of canonical correlations first leads to new population and sample measures of dependence in this latter situation. An example relating wind direction to the level of a pollutant is given. Next, applied to pairs of angular measurements, the method yields previously proposed sample measures in some special cases and a new sample measure in general
Optical proximity sensors for manipulators
A breadboard optical proximity sensor intended for application to remotely operated manipulators has been constructed and evaluated in the laboratory. The sensing head was 20 mm x 15 mm x 10 mm in size, and could be made considerably smaller. Several such devices could be conveniently mounted on a manipulator hand, for example, to align the hand with an object. Type 1 and Type 2 optical configurations are discussed, Type 1 having a sharply defined sensitive volume, Type 2 an extended one. The sensitive volume can be placed at any distance between 1 cm and approximately 1 m by choice of a replaceable prism. The Type 1 lateral resolution was 0.5 mm on one axis and 5 mm perpendicular to it for a unit focused at 7.5 cm. The corresponding resolution in the axial direction was 2.4 cm, but improvement to 0.5 cm is possible. The effect of surface reflectivity is discussed and possible modes of application are suggested
Decomposition and primary crystallization in undercooled Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 melts
Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 bulk metallic glasses were prepared by cooling the melt with a rate of about 10 K/s and investigated with respect to their chemical and structural homogeneity by atom probe field ion microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The measurements on these slowly cooled samples reveal that the alloy exhibits phase separation in the undercooled liquid state. Significant composition fluctuations are found in the Be and Zr concentration but not in the Ti, Cu, and Ni concentration. The decomposed microstructure is compared with the microstructure obtained upon primary crystallization, suggesting that the nucleation during primary crystallization of this bulk glass former is triggered by the preceding diffusion controlled decomposition in the undercooled liquid state
The applicability of frame imaging from a spinning spacecraft. Volume 1: Summary report
A detailed study was made of frame-type imaging systems for use on board a spin stabilized spacecraft for outer planets applications. All types of frame imagers capable of performing this mission were considered, regardless of the current state of the art. Detailed sensor models of these systems were developed at the component level and used in the subsequent analyses. An overall assessment was then made of the various systems based upon results of a worst-case performance analysis, foreseeable technology problems, and the relative reliability and radiation tolerance of the systems. Special attention was directed at restraints imposed by image motion and the limited data transmission and storage capability of the spacecraft. Based upon this overall assessment, the most promising systems were selected and then examined in detail for a specified Jupiter orbiter mission. The relative merits of each selected system were then analyzed, and the system design characteristics were demonstrated using preliminary configurations, block diagrams, and tables of estimated weights, volumes and power consumption
