Development of a synthetic aperture radar design approach for wide-swath implementation
The first phase of a study program to develop an advanced synthetic aperture radar design concept is presented. Attributes of particular importance for the system design include wide swath coverage, reduced power requirements, and versatility in the selection of frequency, polarization and incident angle. The multiple beam configuration provides imaging at a nearly constant angle of incidence and offers the potential of realizing a wide range of the attributes desired for an orbital imaging radar for Earth resources applications
Non equilibrium thermodynamics and cosmological pancakes formation
We investigate the influence of non equilibrium thermodynamics on
cosmological structure formation. In this paper, we consider the collapse of
planar perturbations usually called "Zel'dovich pancakes". We have developed
for that purpose a new two fluids (gas and dark matter) hydrodynamical code,
with three different thermodynamical species: electrons, ions and neutral
particles (T_e\ne T_i \ne T_n). We describe in details the complex structure of
accretion shock waves. We include several relevant processes for a low density,
high temperature, collisional plasma such as non-equilibrium chemical
reactions, cooling, shock heating, thermal energy equipartition between
electrons, ions and neutral particles and electronic conduction. We find two
different regions in the pancake structure: a thermal precursor ahead of the
compression front and an equipartition wave after the compression front where
electrons and ions temperatures differ significantly. This complex structure
may have two interesting consequences: pre-heating of unshocked regions in the
vicinity of massive X-ray clusters and ions and electrons temperatures
differences in the outer regions of X-rays clusters.Comment: 30 pages, including 8 figures, accepted for publication in The

X-ray Bursts from the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar XTE J1814-338
Since the discovery of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 a total
of 27 thermonuclear bursts have been observed from the source with the
Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE). Spectroscopy of the bursts, as well as the presence of continuous burst
oscillations, suggests that all but one of the bursts are sub-Eddington. The
remaining burst has the largest peak bolometric flux of 2.64 x E^-8
erg/sec/cm^2, as well as a gap in the burst oscillations, similar to that seen
in Eddington limited bursts from other sources. Assuming this burst was
Eddington limited we obtain a source distance of about 8 kpc. All the bursts
show coherent oscillations at the 314.4 Hz spin frequency. The burst
oscillations are strongly frequency and phase locked to the persistent
pulsations. Only two bursts show evidence for frequency drift in the first few
seconds following burst onset. In both cases the initial drift corresponds to a
spin down of a few tenths of a Hz. The large oscillation amplitude during the
bursts confirms that the burst flux is modulated at the spin frequency. We
detect, for the first time, a significant first harmonic component in burst
oscillations. The ratio of countrate in the first harmonic to that in the
fundamental can be > 0.25 and is, on average, less than that of the persistent
pulsations. If the pulsations result from a single bright region on the
surface, the harmonic strength suggests the burst emission is beamed, perhaps
due to a stronger magnetic field than in non-pulsing LMXBs. Alternatively, the

Improvements and modifications to the NASA microwave signature acquisition system
A user oriented description of the modified and upgraded Microwave Signature Acquisition System is provided. The present configuration of the sensor system and its operating characteristics are documented and a step-by-step operating procedure provides instruction for mounting the antenna truss assembly, readying the system for data acquisition, and for controlling the system during the data collection sequence. The resulting data products are also identified
MARKET STRUCTURE AND SPATIAL PRICE DYNAMICS
A method was developed with time series models to test hypotheses about the relationship between market structure and spatial price dynamics. Long-run dynamic multipliers measuring the magnitude of lagged adjustments for spatial milled rice prices were calculated from the time series model and used as the dependent variable in a regression model that included a number of factors expected to influence price determination. Results show that price adjustments were slower as regional submarket concentration increased and were faster in the regions with a higher market share. Characterization study of polycrystalline tin oxide surfaces before and after reduction in CO
Polycrystalline tin oxide surfaces have been examined before and after reduction in 40 Torr of CO at 100 and 175 C using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and electron stimulated desorption (ESD). The changes in the surface composition and chemical states of the surface species generally are subtle for the reductive conditions used. However, significant changes do occur with regard to the amounts and the chemical forms of the hydrogen-containing species remaining after both the 100 and 175 C reductions
Single File Diffusion enhancement in a fluctuating modulated 1D channel
We show that the diffusion of a single file of particles moving in a
fluctuating modulated 1D channel is enhanced with respect to the one in a bald
pipe. This effect, induced by the fluctuations of the modulation, is favored by
the incommensurability between the channel potential modulation and the moving
file periodicity. This phenomenon could be of importance in order to optimize
the critical current in superconductors, in particular in the case where mobile
vortices move in 1D channels designed by adapted patterns of pinning sites.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Self-management of context-aware overlay ambient networks
Ambient Networks (ANs) are dynamically changing and heterogeneous as they consist of potentially large numbers of independent, heterogeneous mobile nodes, with spontaneous topologies that can logically interact with each other to share a common control space, known as the Ambient Control Space. ANs are also flexible i.e. they can compose and decompose dynamically and automatically, for supporting the deployment of cross-domain (new) services. Thus, the AN architecture must be sophisticatedly designed to support such high level of dynamicity, heterogeneity and flexibility. We advocate the use of service specific overlay networks in ANs, that are created on-demand according to specific service requirements, to deliver, and to automatically adapt services to the dynamically changing user and network context. An extremal model for amorphous media plasticity
An extremal model for the plasticity of amorphous materials is studied in a
simple two-dimensional anti-plane geometry. The steady-state is analyzed
through numerical simulations. Long-range spatial and temporal correlations in
local slip events are shown to develop, leading to non-trivial and highly
anisotropic scaling laws. In particular, the plastic strain is shown to
statistically concentrate over a region which tends to align perpendicular to
the displacement gradient. By construction, the model can be seen as giving
rise to a depinning transition, the threshold of which (i.e. the macroscopic
yield stress) also reveal scaling properties reflecting the localization of the
