Surface treatments for nickel and nickel-base alloys
Surface treatments of nickel and nickel alloys by diffusion coating, electroplating, explosive hardening, peening, and other method
Wind tunnel model and method
The design and development of a wind tunnel model equipped with pressure measuring devices are discussed. The pressure measuring orifices are integrally constructed in the wind tunnel model and do not contribute to distortions of the aerodynamic surface. The construction of a typical model is described and a drawing of the device is included
Computer program to determine pressure distributions and forces on blunt bodies of revolution
Program was written to include integration of surface pressure in order to obtain axial-force, normal-force, and pitching-moment coefficients. Program was written in CDC FORTRAN for the CDC-6600 computer system
When Do Groups Perform Better than Individuals? A Company Takeover Experiment
It is still an open question when groups will perform better than individuals in intellectual tasks. We report that in a company takeover experiment, groups placed better bids than individuals and substantially reduced the winner’s curse. This improvement was mostly due to peer pressure over the minority opinion and to group learning. Learning took place from interacting and negotiating consensus with others, not simply from observing their bids. When there was disagreement within a group, what prevailed was not the best proposal but the one of the majority. Groups underperformed with respect to a “truth wins” benchmark although they outperformed individuals deciding in isolation.
Metric half-span model support system
A model support system used to support a model in a wind tunnel test section is described. The model comprises a metric, or measured, half-span supported by a nonmetric, or nonmeasured half-span which is connected to a sting support. Moments and forces acting on the metric half-span are measured without interference from the support system during a wind tunnel test
The spectral characteristics of the 2dFGRS-NVSS galaxies
We have analysed the 2dF spectra of a sample of galaxies common to the 2dF
galaxy redshift survey (2dFGRS, Colless 1999) and the NRAO VLA sky survey
(NVSS, Condon et al. 1998). Our sample comprises 88 galaxies selected by Sadler
et al. (1999) from 30 2dFGRS fields observed in 1998. In this paper we discuss
how this and future, much larger, samples of 2dFGRS-NVSS galaxies can be
interpreted via analysis of those galaxies with strong narrow emission lines.
Using diagnostic line ratio measurements we confirm the majority of the eyeball
classifications of Sadler et al. (1999), although many galaxies show evidence
of being `composite' galaxies - a mixture of AGN plus starburst components.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
Equivalence of two mathematical forms for the bound angular momentum of the electromagnetic field
It is shown that the mathematical form, obtained in a recent paper, for the
angular momentum of the electromagnetic field in the vicinity of electric
charge is equivalent to another form obtained previously by Cohen-Tannoudji,
Dupont-Roc and Gilbert. In this version of the paper an improved derivation is
given.Comment: 4 pages pdf, simpler derivatio
