Elimination of rocket engine asymmetric loads during tests at sea level
Secondary injection concept eliminates asymmetric loads and may increase thrust rocket engine loads during sea level tests. The concept uses either a tubular manifold with evenly spaced injection ports or secondary fluid injected at the turbine exhaust inlet to the thrust chamber
Microwave switching power divider
A pair of parallel, spaced-apart circular ground planes define a microwave cavity with multi-port microwave power distributing switching circuitry formed on opposite sides of a thin circular dielectric substrate disposed between the ground planes. The power distributing circuitry includes a conductive disk located at the center of the substrate and connected to a source of microwave energy. A high speed, low insertion loss switching diode and a dc blocking capacitor are connected in series between the outer end of a transmission line and an output port. A high impedance, microwave blocking dc bias choke is connected between each switching diode and a source of switching current. The switching source forward biases the diodes to couple microwave energy from the conductive disk to selected output ports and, to associated antenna elements connected to the output ports to form a synthesized antenna pattern
Noise figure measurement concept for acoustic amplifiers
Optimum length buffer crystals are used with an amplification section for measuring the noise figure for acoustic amplifiers. Measuring the time required to saturate with noise a signal, which is reflected back and forth in the circuit, gives a direct measurement of the amplifiers noise figure
High-temperature, long-life polyimide seals for hydraulic actuator rods
Two types of polyimide seals are developed for hydraulic actuator rod in low pressure second stage of two-stage configuration. Each seal melts test objectives of twenty million cycles of operation at 534 K. Analytical and experimental study results are discussed. Potential applications are given
Are topological defects responsible for the 300 EeV cosmic rays?
We use of a hybrid matrix--Monte Carlo method to simulate the cascade through
the cosmic background radiation initiated by UHE particles and radiation
emitted by topological defects. We follow the cascade over cosmological
distances and calculate the intensities of hadrons, gamma-rays and neutrinos
produced. We compare our results with the observed cosmic ray intensity at 300
EeV and lower energies, and conclude that topological defects are most unlikely
to be the origin of the most energetic cosmic ray events.Comment: 3 pages, compressed and uuencoded PostScript (111kb); Nucl. Phys. B.,

Laboratory studies of the interaction of ions with condensed gases: Planetary applications
The work described is concerned with laboratory studies of the processes that produce the ejection of molecules from the surfaces of condensed gas solids, the change in the chemistry of the surface materials, and the relationship of these results to processes occurring in the solar system. Included is a discussion of the experimental techniques employed in making these laboratory measurements
The braiding for representations of q-deformed affine
We compute the braiding for the `principal gradation' of for from first principles, starting from the idea of a rigid
braided tensor category. It is not necessary to assume either the crossing or
the unitarity condition from S-matrix theory. We demonstrate the uniqueness of
the normalisation of the braiding under certain analyticity assumptions, and
show that its convergence is critically dependent on the number-theoretic
properties of the number in the deformation parameter . We also examine the convergence using probability, assuming a uniform
distribution for on the unit circle.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages with 2 figs, uses epsfi
The Housing and Support Needs of Older People with Visual Impairment
Visual impairment is one of the most prevalent anddisabling conditions among older people, and yet verylittle research has been conducted that could inform thedevelopment of appropriate public services. In order toaddress this deficiency, Thomas Pocklington Trust fundedresearch to examine the housing and support needs of 400visually impaired people aged over 55.The study found that:? There is little professional recognition, or offers of help andadvice for the anxiety, depression, and sense of profoundloss that people experience with late onset of visualimpairment.? Both blind and partially sighted people need timely andholistic assessment, rehabilitation, affordable equipment andregular review.? People with sight loss do not wish to leave their homes.Home is the epicentre of a mental map that assistsorientation and continuity following sight loss.? Social isolation and lack of human contact are majorproblems for people with sight loss.? People with sight loss have poor knowledge of supportgroups, community services and/or specialist housingoptions for older people with visual impairment.
