The objective of this action research study was to improve the speaking skills of the tenth grade students of the UJP (Unit Jasa Pariwisata) class at SMKN 7 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012 through the use of cooperative learning. This action research was conducted in two cycles involving cooperative learning methods such as two stray two stay, think-pair-share, numbered heads together, and inside outside circle as the main activities. Conducting role play, giving feedback, brushing up the materials, asking the students to bring a dictionary, giving a handout and reward were the complement of the main activities. The data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process, interviewing the students and collaborators, holding discussions with the collaborators, giving questionnaires to the students, taking pictures, and recording the teaching and learning process. The instruments used in this research were observation guidelines, interview guidelines, and questionnaires. Data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification were used to analyze the data. The research results show that the studentsā€™ speaking skills improved through the use of cooperative learning. The students made a good improvement in some aspects of speaking skills such as pronunciation, fluency, and interactive communication. They were more confident to speak English. They had more chances to speak up. They easily learnt the materials with a group. They actively participated during the teaching and learning process. They were more aware of the mistakes or errors made as they always gave feedback to othersā€™ performance. The various activities made the class atmosphere enjoyable. The studentsā€™ motivation to bring a manual and electronic dictionary helped them learn the materials. The group work activities applied improved the studentsā€™ understanding towards the materials and the teacherā€™s classroom management

The everyday lives of contemporary youths are awash with drugs to boost pleasure, moods,\ud sexual performance, vitality, appearance and health. This article examines pervasive practices\ud of chemical ???self-maximization??? from the perspectives of youth themselves. The research for this\ud article was conducted among male, female and transgender (male to female, so-called waria)\ud sex workers in Makassar, Indonesia. It presents our ethnographic findings on how these youths\ud experiment with drugs to achieve their desired mental and bodily states: with the painkiller\ud Somadril to feel happy, confident and less reluctant to engage in sex with clients, and contraceptive\ud pills and injectable hormones to feminize their male bodies and to attract customers.\ud Youths are extremely creative in adjusting dosages and mixing substances, with knowledge of\ud the (mostly positive) ???lived effects??? of drugs spreading through collective experimentation and\ud word of mouth. The paper outlines how these experimental practices differ from those that have\ud become the gold standard in biomedicine

Feedback Control System Design for High Frequency Converter

A new control scheme for a switch-mode power converter is proposed. A dynamic programming approach is applied to a buck converter switching regulator powering the load with abruptly varying load voltage and with abruptly powering changing load current. This approach can be applied to other switch-mode topologies. The voltage mode control is applied as it varies the duty cycle and essentially adjusts the input voltage drive to the buck LC components which directly affects output voltage. A closed-loop control system automatically maintains a precise output voltage regardless of varying input and load conditions. In simulation, the performance efficiency is slightly dropped by 4% but this feedback control system resulted in good regulation that holds a constant output under changing load condition. The gain of the feedback is limited to avoid instability. A maximum range of duty ratio gives advantages to widen the operation of DC-DC converter

Domestic Violence in Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia: Married Women's Definitions and Experiences of Violence in the Home

This article contributes to cross-cultural understandings of gender-based violence by examining women's definitions and experiences of domestic violence in Eastern Indonesia. The research was part of a larger study of human rights in maternal and neonatal health and involved a survey that integrated common anthropological practices in its development and delivery. This survey measured the prevalence of emotional and physical abuse, violence during pregnancy, unwanted sex and fear of violence among a sub-sample of 504 married Muslim women. Standard human rights definitions of violence were adapted to create locally appropriate definitions of economic violence, husband infidelity and unwanted sex within marriage. Survey responses indicated that the majority of women believed verbal abuse, threats of harm, economic violence, physical violence, control of women's mobility and a husband's public infidelity to constitute domestic violence. Our exploration of how Indonesian women understand domestic violence reinforces the salience of cultural specificity for different women's definitions of violence, as well as the applicability of internationally recognised definitions of gender-based violen

ā€˜To Take Each Otherā€™ : Bugis Practices of Gender, Sexuality and Marriage

This thesis is an ethnography of Bugis marriage. It is concerned with aspects of gender, sexuality and marriage in a bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. Ā¶ I examine the fundamental concept of siriā€™ in relation to gender socialisation, courtship, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, how sexuality is regulated between the sexes, sex within marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. The analysis considers how Islam combines with local custom (adat) in everyday practices, and how Bugis cultural specificities are affected within the national ideology of contemporary Indonesia. Ā¶ This ethnography explores an interpretation of Bugis social and sexual experience through examination of the construction of gender identities and how they are manifested in marriage. The thesis explores the complementarity of gender for the Bugis. Despite the ideal of feminine passivity, I demonstrate that women exercise agency in a number of circumstances, including how they manage the sexuality of their husbands, defending siriā€™, the arrangement of marriage, remarrying, money management, divorce, and violent situations. I also examine the practices of illegal marriage (kawin liar) and illegal divorce (cerai liar) at local and personal levels. I analyse local and national debates on the legitimation of what is popularly known in Indonesia as ā€˜marriage based on religionā€™ (nikah secara agama) as part of the examination of Bugis marriage and marital relations. Ā¶ My thesis contributes to the understanding of Bugis notions of sexuality, gender and social location, and how these interact with siriā€™. I explore how and why violence occurs within marriage. I use a combination of informal interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions as well textual analysis of traditional manuscripts and incorporation of oral traditions

Child marriage occurs throughout the world, in developed countries and especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. This article examines how categorisation of age is problematised particularly in relation to marriage dispensation after the amendments of marriage law in 2019. Using a qualitative approach, this study was conducted in Maros Baru District, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi. Thirty-seven participants were interviewed and a total of 30 participants were involved in three focus group discussions. Findings demonstrate that there is a gap between legal categorisation of age and its local interpretation in the context of marriage practices. While the amendment of marriage law in 2019 aims to increase the minimum age of marriage, marriage dispensation still occurs. Marriage dispensation is usually given under the consideration of supported evidence in relation to the benefits (maslahat) as well as the harms (mudharat). However, when a request of marriage dispensation is rejected, marriage still occurs. As such, it is common for unregistered marriage (nikah siri) to be a ā€œway outā€
