    The article is devoted to the problem of forming professional communicative competence of foreign students. The main attention is paid to professional phraseological terms, because they (due to their idiomatic nature) often have national and cultural specifics, causing considerable difficulties in studying. Material for analysis was the author's card file of medical phraseological units (more than 100 units), compiled on the basis of dictionaries of medical terms and works on the vocabulary of the medical field. Based on the traditional definition of phraseological units as stable formations, the importance of which is not motivated by the values of the components included in them, the authors offered several classifications of medical phraseological units. In teaching phraseological units it is advisable to use classifications based on structural or semantic principles. It is shown that the division of phraseological units that is traditional for linguistics in terms of the degree of adhesion of words in their composition cannot be used in a foreign language audience, since students have difficulties in understanding this criterion. The article substantiates the necessity of studying medical phraseology already at the initial stage of mastering the language of the profession. The system of tasks (for the initial and advanced stages of learning of Russian language) is proposed, the sequence of which is determined by the structure and semantics of phraseological units. Recommendations for working with professional phraseology can be applied when studying by foreign students of Russian professional idioms not only in medical schools, but also in other universities that provide training for students in other areas

    The present study was carried out to evaluate the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the protein content in Lobaria pulmonaria thalli of various ontogenetic stages (studied groups: juvenile and mature) in forest communities of the middle and northernmost boreal subzones (i.e. two habitat groups). Obtained results showed that the protein content in thalli of different ontogenetic stages and habitats did not differ significantly between the two studied groups and ranged from 3.4 to 3.8 mg g-1. Peroxidase (POD) activity was low and did not exceed 0.01 µmol TG mg-1 of protein. No significant differences between the studied groups (ontogenetic and habitat) in POD was found. On the contrary, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) showed significant differences. SOD activity ranged from 5.1 to 6.3 U mg-1 of protein. Significant differences were found between the SOD activity in juvenile and mature L. pulmonaria thalli in the communities of the northern boreal subzone (p = 0.043) and in juvenile thalli from different habitats (р = 0.020). In general, CAT activity ranged from 187 to 605 μmol H2O2 mg-1 protein. Significant differences in CAT activity were apparent between the thalli from the middle and northernmost boreal subzone communities (p=0.040). The differences in CAT activity values in juvenile and mature thalli in the northernmost boreal subzone (p = 0.006) were found as well. Juvenile thalli from different habitats (p = 0.008) differed. As a result we suggest that juvenile thalli might be more suitable for the purposes of bioindication of environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, since they are more sensitive in comparison to mature thalli

    Metaphor power and language typology: Analysis of correlation on the material of the United Nations Declarations

    The established approaches to language typology share the notion that the features used as a starting point for any classification are linguistic rather than discursive. This study aims to reveal the connection between typological characteristics of languages and linguacultural patterns of expressing metaphoric meaning in discourse. We seek to answer the question: is there a correlation between the way the human mind processes metaphors, and typological characteristics of languages in which those metaphors are verbalised? The research material includes the texts of the United Nations Millennium Declaration and A Universal Declaration on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World in three languages – Russian, English and Chinese. The methodological framework is based on the quantitative analysis of indicators connected with language typology (synthesis, agglutination and isolation) and metaphor power in discourse. To determine the degree of text metaphorisation, we employed the Metaphor-driven discourse analysis (MDDA) based on the calculation of metaphor indices: Metaphor Density Index (MDI), Metaphor Intensity Index (MII), and Metaphor Functional Typology Index (MfTI). The study further juxtaposed the typology indices and metaphorisation indices to identify the correlation between the typology index values and metaphor power on the example of the UN Declarations in three languages. Research results indicate that isolating analytical languages tend to be more figurative than synthetic ones, which is reflected in higher metaphoric density, intensity of metaphor use and frequent employment of structural metaphors. The example of the Chinese language has demonstrated that its typological characteristics on the levels of graphics, word formation and syntactic structures act as prerequisites for metaphor use. The findings contribute to the understanding of the connection between fundamental frameworks of thinking, typological characteristics of languages and linguacultural patterns of expressing identical or similar meanings in discourse

    USE OF ION EXCHANGE FILTERS IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT

    Get PDF
    The authors describe the existing methods of electroplating wastewater treatment in industrial enterprises of the world, particularly in the engineering industry. In this paper, the authors address issues of modernization of the existing system of electroplating wastewater after treatment by the example of the machine-building enterprises through ion-exchange filters. The calculations are carried out on the example of applying cat ion and anion exchange filters. These filters allow one to change the ionic composition of the solution and to carry out its complete demineralization. They have a relatively high filtration rates, the possibility of fully automate systems and the possibility of regenerating ion exchangers, though impurities removed from water do not form a precipitate. The research has shown that the solution of merely technical challenges results in overloading and reducing the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants. Sustainable development could be achieved through the reorientating industrial processes of goods producing and services onto the new models, implementing environmentally friendly technologies for the creation of environmentally friendly production, ensuring a more efficient use of raw materials, replacing the most toxic electrolytes, systematic and irregular changing technological solutions and developing ways to recover waste solutions containing the same type of components

    Impacts of the Tropical Pacific/Indian Oceans on the Seasonal Cycle of the West African Monsoon

    The current consensus is that drought has developed in the Sahel during the second half of the twentieth century as a result of remote effects of oceanic anomalies amplified by local land–atmosphere interactions. This paper focuses on the impacts of oceanic anomalies upon West African climate and specifically aims to identify those from SST anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Oceans during spring and summer seasons, when they were significant. Idealized sensitivity experiments are performed with four atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). The prescribed SST patterns used in the AGCMs are based on the leading mode of covariability between SST anomalies over the Pacific/Indian Oceans and summer rainfall over West Africa. The results show that such oceanic anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Ocean lead to a northward shift of an anomalous dry belt from the Gulf of Guinea to the Sahel as the season advances. In the Sahel, the magnitude of rainfall anomalies is comparable to that obtained by other authors using SST anomalies confined to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The mechanism connecting the Pacific/Indian SST anomalies with West African rainfall has a strong seasonal cycle. In spring (May and June), anomalous subsidence develops over both the Maritime Continent and the equatorial Atlantic in response to the enhanced equatorial heating. Precipitation increases over continental West Africa in association with stronger zonal convergence of moisture. In addition, precipitation decreases over the Gulf of Guinea. During the monsoon peak (July and August), the SST anomalies move westward over the equatorial Pacific and the two regions where subsidence occurred earlier in the seasons merge over West Africa. The monsoon weakens and rainfall decreases over the Sahel, especially in August.Peer reviewe

    Severe early onset preeclampsia: short and long term clinical, psychosocial and biochemical aspects

    Get PDF
    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder commonly defined as de novo hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks gestational age. It occurs in approximately 3-5% of pregnancies and it is still a major cause of both foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide1. As extensive research has not yet elucidated the aetiology of preeclampsia, there are no rational preventive or therapeutic interventions available. The only rational treatment is delivery, which benefits the mother but is not in the interest of the foetus, if remote from term. Early onset preeclampsia (<32 weeks’ gestational age) occurs in less than 1% of pregnancies. It is, however often associated with maternal morbidity as the risk of progression to severe maternal disease is inversely related with gestational age at onset2. Resulting prematurity is therefore the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in patients with severe preeclampsia3. Although the discussion is ongoing, perinatal survival is suggested to be increased in patients with preterm preeclampsia by expectant, non-interventional management. This temporising treatment option to lengthen pregnancy includes the use of antihypertensive medication to control hypertension, magnesium sulphate to prevent eclampsia and corticosteroids to enhance foetal lung maturity4. With optimal maternal haemodynamic status and reassuring foetal condition this results on average in an extension of 2 weeks. Prolongation of these pregnancies is a great challenge for clinicians to balance between potential maternal risks on one the eve hand and possible foetal benefits on the other. Clinical controversies regarding prolongation of preterm preeclamptic pregnancies still exist – also taking into account that preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the Netherlands5 - a debate which is even more pronounced in very preterm pregnancies with questionable foetal viability6-9. Do maternal risks of prolongation of these very early pregnancies outweigh the chances of neonatal survival? Counselling of women with very early onset preeclampsia not only comprises of knowledge of the outcome of those particular pregnancies, but also knowledge of outcomes of future pregnancies of these women is of major clinical importance. This thesis opens with a review of the literature on identifiable risk factors of preeclampsia

    Four-lepton production in proton-proton collisions, pp -> (Z/gamma*)(Z/gamma*) -> 4l, where l = e or mu, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The ZZ production cross section, sigma(pp -> ZZ) = 17.2 +/- 0.5 (stat) +/- 0.7 (syst) +/- 0.4 (theo) +/- 0.4 (lumi) pb, measured using events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region 60 4l) = 4.83(-0.22)(+0.23) (stat)(-0.29)(+0.32) (syst) +/- 0.08 (theo) +/- 0.12(lumi) x 10(-6) for events with a four-lepton invariant mass in the range 80 4GeV for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results agree with standard model predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ. couplings at 95% confidence level: -0.0012 < f(4)(Z) < 0.0010, -0.0010 < f(5)(Z) < 0.0013, -0.0012 < f(4)(gamma) < 0.0013, -0.0012 < f(5)(gamma) < 0.0013

    The article deals with the problems of the coal industry of Russia and possible ways of development of the industry. The presence or absence of strategic minerals (such as coal), the presence or absence of the industrial complex, the presence or absence of highly skilled labor force, and so on., Determines the diversity of economic and social characteristics of each region. These significant differences in the levels of socio-economic development of the regions contribute to increasing social tension, leading to unpredictable migration phenomena, etc. The researchers put the problem in this regard an adequate evaluation of the socio-economic condition of the coal industry, identifying the causes of underdevelopment of some of them and the development of recommendations on equalization of the levels of development of regions. The authors acknowledge that the urgent tasks of any state is to maintain the country's territorial integrity, the prevention of social conflicts, all sorts of problems, to ensure a decent standard of living daily in Russia ,there is a huge regional differentiation of socio-economic indicators matters. The current state and development of the coal industry of the Russian Federation is determined by such factors as the amount of mineral reserves, the quality and conditions of coal mining, funds, scientific and technological progress, working conditions, economic factors.
