Utilizing the mental health nursing workforce:A scoping review of mental health nursing clinical roles and identities
Despite rising international needs for mental health practitioners, the mental health nursing workforce is underutilized. This is in part due to limited understandings of their roles, identities, and capabilities. This paper aimed to collate and synthesize published research on the clinical roles of mental health nurses in order to systematically clarify their professional identity and potential. We searched for eligible studies, published between 2001 and 2021, in five electronic databases. Abstracts of retrieved studies were independently screened against exclusion and inclusion criteria (primarily that studies reported on the outcomes associated with mental health nursing roles). Decisions of whether to include studies were through researcher consensus guided by the criteria. The search yielded 324 records, of which 47 were included. Retained papers primarily focused on three themes related to mental health nursing clinical roles and capabilities. Technical roles included those associated with psychotherapy, consumer safety, and diagnosis. Non-technical roles and capabilities were also described. These included emotional intelligence, advanced communication, and reduction of power differentials. Thirdly, the retained papers reported the generative contexts that influenced clinical roles. These included prolonged proximity with consumers with tensions between therapeutic and custodial roles. The results of this scoping review suggest the mental health nurses (MHNs) have a wide scope of technical skills which they employ in clinical practice. These roles are informed by a distinctive cluster of non-technical capabilities to promote the well-being of service users. They are an adaptable and underutilized component of the mental health workforce in a context of escalating unmet needs for expert mental health care
Men's Preconception Health: A Primary Health-Care Viewpoint
The purpose of this article is to theoretically explore men’s preconception health as a mechanism to enhance fertility, as well as the health and well-being of the subject and his descendants. Premorbid risk factors and behaviors associated with stress, environmental toxins, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, lack of exercise/obesity, and the use of illicit drugs are all known to affect fecundity. While there are many health clinics available to women, where advice in areas such as postnatal care of the newborn, family planning, and couples fertility is provided, there are few, if any, equivalent health clinics available to men. Additionally, getting men to attend primary health-care services has also been continuously problematic, even in the context of there being a clearly discernible need for treatment. It is argued in this article that an impetus is required to encourage men to focus on and improve their preconception health and to utilize primary health-care services to take action. An assertive men’s preconception health outlook can positively influence the conjugal relationship, fathering, male self-esteem, and continued good health. Using the sometimes complex concept of preconception health as a motivating factor for healthy lifestyle adaptation has the potential to improve male fertility outcomes and general health and well-being, as well as the health of future generations
Seeds of Change: Corn Seed Mixtures for Resistance Management and Integrated Pest Management
The use of mixtures of transgenic insecticidal seed and nontransgenic seed to provide an in-field refuge for susceptible insects in insect-resistance-management (IRM) plans has been considered for at least two decades. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has only recently authorized the practice. This commentary explores issues that regulators, industry, and other stakeholders should consider as the use of biotechnology increases and seed mixtures are implemented as a major tactic for IRM. We discuss how block refuges and seed mixtures in transgenic insecticidal corn, Zea mays L., production will influence integrated pest management (IPM) and the evolution of pest resistance. We conclude that seed mixtures will make pest monitoring more difficult and that seed mixtures may make IRM riskier because of larval behavior and greater adoption of insecticidal corn. Conversely, block refuges present a different suite of risks because of adult pest behavior and the lower compliance with IRM rules expected from farmers. It is likely that secondary pests not targeted by the insecticidal corn as well as natural enemies will respond differently to block refuges and seed mixtures
A Search for Early Optical Emission from Short and Long Duration Gamma-ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts of short duration may harbor vital clues to the range of
phenomena producing bursts. However, recent progress from the observation of
optical counterparts has not benefitted the study of short bursts. We have
searched for early optical emission from six gamma-ray bursts using the ROTSE-I
telephoto array. Three of these events were of short duration, including GRB
980527 which is among the brightest short bursts yet observed. The data consist
of unfiltered CCD optical images taken in response to BATSE triggers delivered
via the GCN. For the first time, we have analyzed the entire 16 degree by 16
degree field covered for five of these bursts. In addition, we discuss a search
for the optical counterpart to GRB 000201, a well-localized long burst. Single
image sensitivities range from 13th to 14th magnitude around 10 s after the
initial burst detection, and 14 - 15.8 one hour later. No new optical
counterparts were discovered in this analysis suggesting short burst optical
and gamma-ray fluxes are uncorrelated.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, subm. to ApJ Let
Prompt Optical Observations of Gamma-ray Bursts
The Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) seeks to measure
simultaneous and early afterglow optical emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs).
A search for optical counterparts to six GRBs with localization errors of 1
square degree or better produced no detections. The earliest limiting
sensitivity is m(ROTSE) > 13.1 at 10.85 seconds (5 second exposure) after the
gamma-ray rise, and the best limit is m(ROTSE) > 16.0 at 62 minutes (897 second
exposure). These are the most stringent limits obtained for GRB optical
counterpart brightness in the first hour after the burst. Consideration of the
gamma-ray fluence and peak flux for these bursts and for GRB990123 indicates
that there is not a strong positive correlation between optical flux and
