Materiales vascos del legado de Wilhelm von Humboldt (III): Pablo Pedro de Astarloa y Aguirre: Plan de lenguas o Gramatica bascongada en el dialecto bizcaíno (fragmento)

The existence of the Plan de Lenguas has been a widely discussed mystery in the history of Basque. We have mostly indirect knowledge about it from contemporaries and from the first curator of Astarloa's legacy (J. B. Erro), as well as from various letters and notes. Some scholars started doubting the existence of the Plan as a separate manuscript altogether. Humboldt did mention and comment on it amply in all his descriptions of the Hülfsmittel (materials) at his disposal. In the mid-thirties of the 20th century J. Gárate published the only comprehensive record of this manuscript, which Humboldt wrote while he had the possibility to read and excerpt the Plan de Lenguas during his stay in Durango in the spring of 1801. Some ten years later Humbdoldt had received a copy of some parts of the Plan, but we cannot trace back the origin. For reasons not entirely clear to me, this fragment of the manuscript (a bit more than 70 pages) remained unnoticed among the papers of the Humboldt legacy until we first published it in 2002 as part of the Humboldt edition project at the University of Graz. The reason for overlooking the identity of the manuscript 'including bascologists like Azkue must have had it in his hands' was probably the classification as "von spanischer Hand" by Humboldt's secretary Buschmann in the index of Coll. Emakume-bahitzea eta lege fonetikoak Georg von der Gabelentzen Hizkuntza arrotzak jasotzeko eskuliburua-ren ingurukoak

In his late years Georg von der Gabelentz publishes a Handbook for collecting data from foreign languages. In his legacy we found one test-copy filled in by himself for Basque. As I show this handbook does not seriously reflect the state of data collection in his time and it literally reproduces word lists already used in his earlier publication on Basque and Berber. Also the Basque version already includes parallel word forms from Tuareg and Kabyl. Schuchardt, when reviewing the v.d. Gabelentz' Basque and Berber works, severely criticizes the sloppy methodological basis as well as the lack of knowledge of the relevant literature. The public and private discussion of the two scholars is documented in this contribution. V.d. Gabelentz at one point responds to Schuchardt's methodological criticism by mentioning that peoples which lack continuity in societal development may not be expected to present continuity in higher intellectual developments like regular sound changes

La red vascológica de Schuchardt

Among the founding factors for modernism in philology/linguistics, there were two important medial innovations as a consequence of industrialization: new printing technologies and the installation of a general mail system. This contribution explores their catalyzing effects on the basis of Schuchardt’s bascology, showing that the (pre-)academic network of epistolary exchange, of reviewing and other types of contact, which had been created by those innovative scholars, is at least as important for the development of the humanities as the publications in sensu stricto. Moreover, this paper illustrates modern techniques applied in the digital and open source "Hugo Schuchardt Archiv", which virtually reconstruct the network which had existed in the 19th century. The archive publishes, among other things, at the moment nearly 8,000 letters with originals, transcription and comments (from which around 1,700 with bascological interest).; Entre los elementos fundacionales de la filología y la lingüística modernas hubo dos importantes innovaciones como consecuencia de la industrialización: nuevas tecnologías de impresión y el establecimiento de un sistema postal general. En esta contribución se exploran sus efectos catalizadores sobre la base del trabajo vascológico de Schuchardt, mostrando que la red (pre-)académica de intercambio epistolar, de reseñas y otros tipos de contacto, creada por estos estudiosos, es al menos tan importante para el desarrollo de las humanidades como las publicaciones sensu stricto. Además, se ilustran técnicas modernas aplicadas en el "Hugo Schuchardt Archiv" digital y open source, que reconstruyen virtualmente la red existente en el siglo XIX. En el archivo se han publicado de momento, entre otras cosas, casi 8.000 cartas en facsímile, transcritas y comentadas (alrededor de 1.700 de las cuales son de interés vascológico)

Die formierung der grammatischen analyse: die rolle des baskischen auf dem weg humboldts als grammatiker. Einige editorische anmerkungen zu den frühen baskologischen arbeiten

Wilhelm von Humboldt had been actively interested in Basque studies for more than two decades. The first years of this period, starting in Paris between his two journeys to Spain (1799/1800) and to the Basque Country (spring 1801) and spanning well into the Rome years, have sometimes been called the period of grammatical formation. Besides Hebrew (which was handled more like a classical language though), Basque was the first language in which Humboldt, due to the autochthonous grammarians like Astarloa, discovers for his own analytical framework completely new grammatical relations, which he starts to organize in his encyclopedic project of categories. This circumstance has previously been noted by Michelena, Gómez and others. The model he starts developing for descriptive and first attempts of explanatory purposes is the same he takes on into the analyses of the many languages to follow during his lifetime. Especially the two versions of the "Hülfsmittel" offer a good example of his critical evaluation of the traditional grammarians. Este artículo además de presentar un esbozo de la estructura de su legado manuscrito, también presenta material de autores diferentes coleccionado por Humboldt.
