    Rheological properties of polyurethane-based magnetorheological gels

    © 2019 Zhang, Li, Wang and Wang. The paper tests the influence of mass fractions of carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) on the rheological properties of magnetorheological (MR) gels. Polyurethane-based MR gels with different weight fraction of CIPs, i.e., 40, 60, and 80%, were firstly prepared by mechanical mixing, respectively. The changes of shear stress and viscosity with shear rate under different magnetic flux density were tested and analyzed. It was found that the shear stress increases with mass fraction under magnetic flux density. The viscoelastic properties of MRGs were achieved by oscillatory shear measure. The effects of strain amplitude and frequency on viscoelastic of MRGs under different magnetic flux density were measured and analyzed. The study results shown that the elastic characteristics become more obvious with the increase of CIPs mass fraction. However, it has opposite effect on the viscous properties of materials

    Screening of lignin-degrading fungi for their ability to decay cassava residue

    To screen applicable fungi for their ability to decay cassava residue, nineteen lignin-degrading fungi were isolated by guaiacol and azure B plates. Cassava residue decayed characteristics of the isolates were evaluated systematically by principal component analysis (PCA) of weight and components loss data, and compared with those of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes sp. SYBC-L4. Four groups of decayed cassava residue were identified. Fungus N1 and N3 grouped together and showed high lignin-degrading selectivity. Fungus N5 and N8 grouped with P. chrysosporium and showed high degradation ability. During the four weeks incubation, the lignin-degrading selectivity value of fungus N3 ranged from 1.14 to 1.38 and was the best, the weight loss of fungus N5 and N8 achieved 30.93% and 33.34%, respectively. Fungus N3, N5, and N8 were identified as Pleurotus sp., Trametes sp. and Coriolopsis sp. based on 18S rDNA gene sequences, respectively. PCA is an effective method in recognizing cassava residue decayed characteristics of fungi and is helpful to screen fungi for their potential application. The three screened out fungi could be used to decay cassava residue for enhancement of its bioconversion efficiency

    Degradation of lignin in cassava residue with Phanerochaete chrysosporium by solid state cultivation

    Cassava residue is a lignocellulosic waste byproduct in cassava-based ethanol production. Bioconversion of this waste to methane is one choice to solve its disposal problem. The bioconversion of lignocellulosic wastes could be enhanced through lignin degradation by solid state cultivation (SSC) with Phanerochaete chrysosporium. In this study, effects of moisture content, veratryl alcohol concentration and pH on lignin degradation of P. chrysosporium in solid cassava residue substrate cultivation were examined. Results showed that lignin degradation were significantly affected by moisture content and veratryl alcohol concentration. The optimal cultivation conditions for lignin degradation were pH 4.5, moisture content 66% and veratryl alcohol concentration 5.70 mM/kg. Within fourteen days of cultivation at these optimal conditions, lignin degradation mainly occurred in the first six days and lignin loss were 28.36±0.25%. Moreover, microscopic structure observation demonstrated that the structure of cassava residue was destroyed. The degradation of lignin and breakdown of the cassava residue structure by P. chrysosporium in SSC would provide a new approach to facilitate the bioconversion of cassava residue to methane in the future application

    Development and clinical application of a new testicular prosthesis

    A new type of testicular prosthesis made of silastic with an elliptical shape to mimic a normal testis was developed by our team and submitted for patenting in China. The prosthesis was produced in different sizes to imitate the normal testis of the patient. To investigate the effects and safety of the testicular prosthesis, 20 patients receiving testicular prosthesis implantation were recruited for this study. Follow-up after 6 months revealed no complications in the patients. All the patients answered that they were satisfied with their body image and the position of the implants, 19 patients were satisfied with the size and 16 patients were satisfied with the weight. These results show that the testicular prosthesis used in this study can meet patient's expectations. Patients undergoing orchiectomy should be offered the option to receive a testicular prosthesis implantation. The dimensions and weight of the available prosthetic implants should be further addressed to improve patient satisfaction

    Recurrent lung adenocarcinoma benefits from microwave ablation following multidisciplinary treatments: A case with long-term survival

    Lung cancer has become the leading cause of cancer death all over the world. Nowadays, there is a consensus that the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) prefers a combination of multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment and individualized treatment, which can significantly improve the prognosis of patients. Here, we report a female patient with recurrence-prone NSCLC. She had a decade-long disease course, during which the lesion recurred twice and finally cured with Multi-Disciplinary Treatment (MDT). An elderly female patient was admitted to the hospital after diagnosis of lung cancer, and treated with surgery and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Five years later, suspicious lesions were found by computed tomography (CT) reexamination, and then confirmed tumor recurrence by puncture biopsy. Based on the genetic test results, gefitinib was used for subsequent targeted therapy, and the lesion gradually shrunk to disappear. However, the lesion appeared again two years later, after consultation the microwave ablation was adopted and the curative effect was excellent. At last, regular reexamination showed no abnormality, the patient has survived so far. The case proves the great benefit of multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment, especially microwave ablation for patient with recurrence-prone NSCLC. And the effect of systemic anti-tumor immune response induced by microwave ablation on lung cancer also needs to be further explored

    The effects of psychiatric disorders on the risk of chronic heart failure: a univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization study

    BackgroundSubstantial evidence suggests an association between psychiatric disorders and chronic heart failure. However, further investigation is needed to confirm the causal relationship between these psychiatric disorders and chronic heart failure. To address this, we evaluated the potential effects of five psychiatric disorders on chronic heart failure using two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR).MethodsWe selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with chronic heart failure and five psychiatric disorders (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia (SCZ)). Univariable (UVMR) and multivariable two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MVMR) were employed to assess causality between these conditions. Ever smoked and alcohol consumption were controlled for mediating effects in the multivariable MR. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) and Wald ratio estimator methods served as the primary analytical methods for estimating potential causal effects. MR-Egger and weighted median analyses were also conducted to validate the results. Sensitivity analyses included the funnel plot, leave-one-out, and MR-Egger intercept tests. Additionally, potential mediators were investigated through risk factor analyses.ResultsGenetically predicted heart failure was significantly associated with ADHD (odds ratio (OR), 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04–1.20; p = 0.001), ASD (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.07–1.56; p = 0.008), bipolar disorder (OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.83–0.96; p = 0.001), major depression (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.03–1.29; p = 0.015), SCZ (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00–1.07; p = 0.024). Several risk factors for heart failure are implicated in the above cause-and-effect relationship, including ever smoked and alcohol consumption.ConclusionOur study demonstrated ADHD, ASD, SCZ and major depression may have a causal relationship with an increased risk of heart failure. In contrast, bipolar disorder was associated with a reduced risk of heart failure, which could potentially be mediated by ever smoked and alcohol consumption. Therefore, prevention strategies for heart failure should also incorporate mental health considerations, and vice versa
