    Determination of the WWWW polarization fractions in pp→W±W±jjpp \to W^\pm W^\pm jj using a deep machine learning technique

    The unitarization of the longitudinal vector boson scattering (VBS) cross section by the Higgs boson is a fundamental prediction of the Standard Model which has not been experimentally verified. One of the most promising ways to measure VBS uses events containing two leptonically-decaying same-electric-charge WW bosons produced in association with two jets. However, the angular distributions of the leptons in the WW boson rest frame, which are commonly used to fit polarization fractions, are not readily available in this process due to the presence of two neutrinos in the final state. In this paper we present a method to alleviate this problem by using a deep machine learning technique to recover these angular distributions from measurable event kinematics and demonstrate how the longitudinal-longitudinal scattering fraction could be studied.     Assessing dissociation:A systematic review and evaluation of existing measures

    Objective: This review aimed to assess the psychometric properties and methodological quality of existing dissociation measures. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO were searched in May 2023 using comprehensive search terms for ‘dissociation’ combined with terms for ‘measurement’ and ‘psychometric properties’. The review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023423485) and followed PRISMA and COSMIN guidelines. We assessed content validity, structural validity, cross-cultural validity, and different indices of reliability comprising 1) reliability (test-retest, inter-rater, intra-rater), 2) internal consistency, and 3) measurement error. Results: Of 7570 studies, 170 were eligible, revealing 44 measures of dissociation (86% trait dissociation, 14% state dissociation) and their 14 adapted versions. None of the measures met all COSMIN criteria for good psychometric properties and high methodological quality. Overall, methodological quality was rated as follows: ‘doubtful’ for content validity, ‘adequate’ for measurement error and cross-cultural validity, and ‘very good’ for structural validity and internal consistency. Most included studies did not assess the reliability of investigated measures. Conclusion: The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), adolescent DES, Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire, Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire-20, and Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale demonstrated strong evidence for measuring general, child/adolescent, trauma-related (state) or somatoform dissociation, and depersonalisation, respectively. Future research should refine or develop dissociation measures following COSMIN guidelines to ensure robust methodology and psychometric properties.</p

    Flavor and Acceptance of Roasted California Almonds During Accelerated Storage

    Monitoring oxidative flavor changes in almonds is possible only if the chemical and sensory profile during roasting and storage is first established. Herein, almonds roasted at two different temperatures (115 and 152 °C) were stored at 39 °C for 0 to 12 months and were analyzed by headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, descriptive analysis, and consumer hedonic analysis. Volatile profiles, descriptive sensory profiles, and consumer hedonic scores were analyzed for predictive relationships. Descriptive attributes involving Roasted and Nutty as well as consumer liking were highest in fresh almonds, while flavors typically associated with oxidative rancidity such as Cardboard, Painty/Solvent, Soapy, and Total Oxidized increased during storage. Compounds most important for predicting rancidity-related attributes were lipid oxidation products, including pentanal, hexanal, heptanal, and octanal. Consumer liking was best predicted by similar compounds to those predicting Clean Nutty flavor, including Maillard reaction products such as 2- and 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylpyrazine, and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine

    Efficient sonochemical catalytic degradation of tetracycline using TiO2 fractured nanoshells

    Overexposure to antibiotics originating in wastewater has profound environmental and health implications. Conventional treatment methods are not fully effective in removing certain antibiotics, such as the commonly used antibiotic, tetracycline, leading to its accumulation in water catchments. Alternative antibiotic removal strategies are garnering attention, including sonocatalytic oxidative processes. In this work, we investigated the degradation of tetracycline using a combination of TiO2 fractured nanoshells (TFNs) and an advanced sonochemical reactor design. The study encompassed an examination of multiple process parameters to understand their effects on the degradation of tetracycline. These included tetracycline adsorption on TFNs, reaction time, initial tetracycline concentration, solvent pH, acoustic pressure amplitude, number of acoustic cycles, catalyst dosage, TFNs' reusability, and the impact of adjuvants such as light and H2O2. Though TFNs adsorbed tetracycline, the addition of ultrasound was able to degrade tetracycline completely (with 100% degradation) within six minutes. Under the optimal operating conditions, the proposed sonocatalytic system consumed 80% less energy compared to the values reported in recently published sonocatalytic research. It also had the lowest CO2 footprint when compared to the other sono-/photo-based technologies. This study suggests that optimizing the reaction system and operating the reaction under low power and at a lower duty cycle are effective in achieving efficient cavitation for sonocatalytic reactions

    Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga whose lineage diverged from land plants over 1 billion years ago. It is a model system for studying chloroplast-based photosynthesis, as well as the structure, assembly, and function of eukaryotic flagella (cilia), which were inherited from the common ancestor of plants and animals, but lost in land plants. We sequenced the ∼120-megabase nuclear genome of Chlamydomonas and performed comparative phylogenomic analyses, identifying genes encoding uncharacterized proteins that are likely associated with the function and biogenesis of chloroplasts or eukaryotic flagella. Analyses of the Chlamydomonas genome advance our understanding of the ancestral eukaryotic cell, reveal previously unknown genes associated with photosynthetic and flagellar functions, and establish links between ciliopathy and the composition and function of flagella

    Trauma ICU Prevalence Project: the diversity of surgical critical care.

    Background:Surgical critical care is crucial to the care of trauma and surgical patients. This study was designed to provide a contemporary assessment of patient types, injuries, and conditions in intensive care units (ICU) caring for trauma patients. Methods:This was a multicenter prevalence study of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma; data were collected on all patients present in participating centers' trauma ICU (TICU) on November 2, 2017 and April 10, 2018. Results:Forty-nine centers submitted data on 1416 patients. Median age was 58 years (IQR 41-70). Patient types included trauma (n=665, 46.9%), non-trauma surgical (n=536, 37.8%), medical (n=204, 14.4% overall), or unspecified (n=11). Surgical intensivists managed 73.1% of patients. Of ICU-specific diagnoses, 57% were pulmonary related. Multiple high-intensity diagnoses were represented (septic shock, 10.2%; multiple organ failure, 5.58%; adult respiratory distress syndrome, 4.38%). Hemorrhagic shock was seen in 11.6% of trauma patients and 6.55% of all patients. The most common traumatic injuries were rib fractures (41.6%), brain (38.8%), hemothorax/pneumothorax (30.8%), and facial fractures (23.7%). Forty-four percent were on mechanical ventilation, and 17.6% had a tracheostomy. One-third (33%) had an infection, and over half (54.3%) were on antibiotics. Operations were performed in 70.2%, with 23.7% having abdominal surgery. At 30 days, 5.4% were still in the ICU. Median ICU length of stay was 9 days (IQR 4-20). 30-day mortality was 11.2%. Conclusions:Patient acuity in TICUs in the USA is very high, as is the breadth of pathology and the interventions provided. Non-trauma patients constitute a significant proportion of TICU care. Further assessment of the global predictors of outcome is needed to inform the education, research, clinical practice, and staffing of surgical critical care providers.     Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of antiplatelet therapy
