Investigation of the effect of stress on the chemistry, metabolism, and biophysics of collagen
The research is reported concerning the effect of stress on the chemistry in the connective tissue of the rat. It was found that within a day after administration of cortisol (stress harmone), a significant amount of the insoluble collagen disappeared from the skin. It is concluded that the abrupt catabolism of cutaneous collagen releases peptides. These peptides are rapidly degraded to free amino acids which are active in effecting liver glycogen synthesis, and provide a major energy source to assist the animal in the fight or flight reaction. It is proposed that cutaneous collagen represents a reserve energy pool, which can be mobilized via stress harmones
Cytotoxic effects on splenic ultrafiltrates upon leukaemic lymphocytes.
Ultrafiltrates from spleen inhibited both DNA synthesis and the proliferation of normal lymphocytes stimulated inculture from both mouse and man without apparent cytotoxicity. However, the same doses of this spleen ultrafiltrate will kill up to two-thirds of the leukaemic lymphoblasts from both mouse and man after 24 h incubation. This unique lymphocytotoxic effect could also be demonstrated on fresh primary cultures of leukaemic lymphocytes and was highly effective on slowly growing established cell lines under crowd culture conditions. Furthermore. ultrafiltrated thymus extract did not affect the DNA synthesis rates of the viability of NC-37 lymphoblasts, which have B cell characteristic. Thymus extract was cytotoxic to Molt cells, which have T cell characteristics
X-ray Supercavities in the Hydra A Cluster and the Outburst History of the Central Galaxy's Active Nucleus
A 227 ksec Chandra Observatory X-ray image of the hot plasma in the Hydra A
cluster has revealed an extensive cavity system. The system was created by a
continuous outflow or a series of bursts from the nucleus of the central galaxy
over the past 200-500 Myr. The cavities have displaced 10% of the plasma within
a 300 kpc radius of the central galaxy, creating a swiss-cheese-like topology
in the hot gas. The surface brightness decrements are consistent with empty
cavities oriented within 40 degrees of the plane of the sky. The outflow has
deposited upward of 10^61 erg into the cluster gas, most of which was propelled
beyond the inner ~100 kpc cooling region. The supermassive black hole has
accreted at a rate of approximately 0.1-0.25 solar masses per year over this
time frame, which is a small fraction of the Eddington rate of a ~10^9 solar
mass black hole, but is dramatically larger than the Bondi rate. Given the
previous evidence for a circumnuclear disk of cold gas in Hydra A, these
results are consistent with the AGN being powered primarily by infalling cold
gas. The cavity system is shadowed perfectly by 330 MHz radio emission. Such
low frequency synchrotron emission may be an excellent proxy for X-ray cavities
and thus the total energy liberated by the supermassive black hole.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; Submitted to ApJ, revised per referee's

Ionization Structure and the Reverse Shock in E0102-72
The young oxygen-rich supernova remnant E0102-72 in the Small Magellanic
Cloud has been observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer
of Chandra. The high resolution X-ray spectrum reveals images of the remnant in
the light of individual emission lines of oxygen, neon, magnesium and silicon.
The peak emission region for hydrogen-like ions lies at larger radial distance
from the SNR center than the corresponding helium-like ions, suggesting passage
of the ejecta through the "reverse shock". We examine models which test this

CORMASS: A Compact and Efficient NIR Spectrograph for Studying Low-Mass Objects
CorMASS (Cornell Massachusetts Slit Spectrograph) is a compact,
low-resolution (R=300), double-pass prism cross-dispersed near-infrared (NIR)
spectrograph in operation on the Palomar Observatory 60-inch telescope. Its
2-dimensional spectral format provides simultaneous coverage from lambda ~ 0.75
microns to lambda ~ 2.5 microns (z'JHK bands). A remotely operated cold flip
mirror permits its NICMOS3 detector to function as a K_s slit viewer to assist
object placement into the 2 arcsec x 15 arcsec slit. CorMASS was primarily
designed for the rapid spectral classification of low-mass stellar and
sub-stellar objects identified by the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS).
CorMASS' efficiency and resolution also make it a versatile instrument for the
spectral observation and classification of many other types of bright objects

Beyond XSPEC: Towards Highly Configurable Analysis
We present a quantitative comparison between software features of the defacto
standard X-ray spectral analysis tool, XSPEC, and ISIS, the Interactive
Spectral Interpretation System. Our emphasis is on customized analysis, with
ISIS offered as a strong example of configurable software. While noting that
XSPEC has been of immense value to astronomers, and that its scientific core is
moderately extensible--most commonly via the inclusion of user contributed
"local models"--we identify a series of limitations with its use beyond
conventional spectral modeling. We argue that from the viewpoint of the
astronomical user, the XSPEC internal structure presents a Black Box Problem,
with many of its important features hidden from the top-level interface, thus
discouraging user customization. Drawing from examples in custom modeling,
numerical analysis, parallel computation, visualization, data management, and
automated code generation, we show how a numerically scriptable, modular, and
extensible analysis platform such as ISIS facilitates many forms of advanced
