This paper proves that oligopolistic price competition with both targeted advertising and targeted prices can lead to a permanent fragmentation of the market into a local monopoly. However, compared to mass advertising, targeting increases social welfare and turns out to be more beneficial for consumers than for firms.discount coupons.
How cyclical do cyclically-adjusted balances remain? An EU study
Observed budget balances are an imperfect indicator of the fiscal policy stance, because fluctuations in economic activity induce automatic changes in the balance, hence the use of cyclically-adjusted balances (CAB). However, this paper shows that CABs (as measured through one of the two methods currently used by the Commission) tend to be systematically overestimated during downturns and underestimated during expansions. The dominant source of this distortion arises from the filtering of revenues deemed to be cyclical, possibly signalling a problem with the computation of elasticities. The effect of the items which are assumed not to move with the cycle is non significant, but this overall result conceals offseting effects: public investment turns to be significantly procyclical and interest payments and transfers to firms are countercyclical.Structural balances, output gap
Mirror symmetry on K3 surfaces via Fourier-Mukai transform
We use a relative Fourier-Mukai transform on elliptic K3 surfaces to
describe mirror symmetry. The action of this Fourier-Mukai transform on the
cohomology ring of reproduces relative T-duality and provides an
infinitesimal isometry of the moduli space of algebraic structures on
which, in view of the triviality of the quantum cohomology of K3 surfaces, can

NifB and NifEN protein levels are regulated by ClpX2 under nitrogen fixation conditions in Azotobacter vinelandii
The major part of biological nitrogen fixation is catalysed by the molybdenum nitrogenase that carries at its active site the iron and molybdenum cofactor (FeMo-co). The nitrogen fixation (nif) genes required for the biosynthesis of FeMo-co are derepressed in the absence of a source of fixed nitrogen. The nifB gene product is remarkable because it assembles NifB-co, a complex cluster proposed to comprise a [6Fe-9S-X] cluster, from simpler [Fe-S] clusters common to other metabolic pathways. NifB-co is a common intermediate of the biosyntheses of the cofactors present in the molybdenum, vanadium and iron nitrogenases. In this work, the expression of the Azotobacter vinelandii nifB gene was uncoupled from its natural nif regulation to show that NifB protein levels are lower in cells growing diazotrophically than in cells growing at the expense of ammonium. A. vinelandii carries a duplicated copy of the ATPase component of the ubiquitous ClpXP protease (ClpX2), which is induced under nitrogen fixing conditions. Inactivation of clpX2 resulted in the accumulation of NifB and NifEN and a defect in diazotrophic growth, especially when iron was in short supply. Mutations in nifE, nifN and nifX or in nifA also affected NifB accumulation, suggesting that NifB susceptibility to degradation might vary during its catalytic cycle.Fil: Martínez Noël, Giselle María Astrid. The advances in the manipulation of human tissues,
the development of cryobiology, paediatric cardiac
surgery, the impossibility of obtaining an ideal
prosthetic cardiac valve and the surgical treatment of
cardiovascular infections have revived interest in the
use of homografts. The donors of these homografts
can be: a) Live donors: aortic and pulmonary valve of
the recipient of a heart transplant; b) Multiorgan
donors with a diagnosis of death according to neurological
criteria, whose heart is rejected for heart transplant;
c) Cadaver donors with asystolia of less than 8
hours.
Homograft cardiac valves are the substitute of
choice in aortic valve endocarditis, patients with
counter-indications for anticoagulation, reconstruction
of the outflow tract of the right ventricle, aortic
valve replacement in children and young adults
through the Ross operation, and an optional indication
is the aortic valve and/or rising aorta replacement
in patients over 60 years of age. Although there
are not sufficiently broad series of homogratfs with
arterial substitutes, with respect to the number of
patients and time of evolution, the results suggest
that this can benefit patients with vascular infection,
immunodepressed patients or complex patients

Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph Observations of Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae: the nature of dust in low metallicity circumstellar ejecta
We present 5 - 40 micron spectroscopy of 41 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the
Magellanic Clouds, observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer
Space Telescope. The spectra show the presence of a combination of nebular
emission lines and solid-state features from dust, superimposed on the thermal
IR continuum.
By analyzing the 25 LMC and 16 SMC PNe in our sample we found that the IR
spectra of 14 LMC and 4 SMC PNe are dominated by nebular emission lines, while
the other spectra show solid-state features. We observed that the solid-state
features are compatible with carbon-rich dust grains (SiC, polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs), etc.) in most cases, except in three PNe showing
oxygen-rich dust features. The frequency of carbonaceous dust features is
generally higher in LMC than in SMC PNe.
The spectral analysis allowed the correlations of the dust characteristics
with the gas composition and morphology, and the properties of the central
stars. We found that: 1) all PNe with carbonaceous dust features have C/O>1,
none of these being bipolar or otherwise highly asymmetric; 2) all PNe with
oxygen-rich dust features have C/O<1, with probable high mass progenitors if
derived from single-star evolution (these PNe are either bipolar or highly
asymmetric); 3) the dust temperature tracks the nebular and stellar evolution;
and 4) the dust production efficiency depends on metallicity, with low

Mixed Valvular Disease Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Quantification and Systematic Differentiation Using Clinical Measurements and Image-Based Patient‐Specific In Silico Modeling
Background: Mixed valvular disease (MVD), mitral regurgitation (MR) from pre‐existing disease in conjunction with paravalvular leak (PVL) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), is one of the most important stimuli for left ventricle (LV) dysfunction, associated with cardiac mortality. Despite the prevalence of MVD, the quantitative understanding of the interplay between pre‐existing MVD, PVL, LV, and post‐TAVR recovery is meager.
Methods and Results: We quantified the effects of MVD on valvular‐ventricular hemodynamics using an image‐based patient‐specific computational framework in 72 MVD patients. Doppler pressure was reduced by TAVR (mean, 77%; N=72; P<0.05), but it was not always accompanied by improvements in LV workload. TAVR had no effect on LV workload in 22 patients, and LV workload post‐TAVR significantly rose in 32 other patients. TAVR reduced LV workload in only 18 patients (25%). PVL significantly alters LV flow and increases shear stress on transcatheter aortic valve leaflets. It interacts with mitral inflow and elevates shear stresses on mitral valve and is one of the main contributors in worsening of MR post‐TAVR. MR worsened in 32 patients post‐TAVR and did not improve in 18 other patients.
Conclusions: PVL limits the benefit of TAVR by increasing LV load and worsening of MR and heart failure. Post‐TAVR, most MVD patients (75% of N=72; P<0.05) showed no improvements or even worsening of LV workload, whereas the majority of patients with PVL, but without that pre‐existing MR condition (60% of N=48; P<0.05), showed improvements in LV workload. MR and its exacerbation by PVL may hinder the success of TAVR
