Temperature-dependent magnetic particle imaging with multi-harmonic lock-in detection
Advances in instrumentation and tracer materials are still required to enable
sensitive and accurate 3D temperature monitoring by magnetic particle imaging.
We have developed a magnetic particle imaging instrument to observe temperature
variations using MPI, and discuss resolution dependence on temperature and
harmonic number. Furthermore, we present a low noise approach using lock-in
detection for temperature measurement, and discuss implications for a new

“We are the Peace Team”: Exploring transformation among previously gang involved young men in Cape Town
INTRODUCTION: Many young men in South Africa belong to gangs which has negative consequences for individuals and society. Disengaging
from a gang is difficult as it requires transformation; however, little is known about transformation in previously gang-involved youth.
This study therefore aimed at exploring the experiences of transformation through occupational engagement in a group of young men
who were previously involved in gangs. The objectives were to explore the young men’s experiences of how occupational engagement
facilitated, and sustained, their transformation to an ex-gang lifestyle, and the challenges which they faced.
METHODS: In this descriptive, qualitative study, ten young men who were previously involved in gangs and subsequently became part
of a group called the “Peace Team” participated in four focus groups. Data obtained were analysed thematically.
FINDINGS: The first theme “There’s that sense of change” depicted the participants’ experiences and perceptions about their
transformation out of gangs. The second theme “We are the Peace Team” showed that belonging to the Peace Team facilitated and
sustained transformation as this provided opportunities to engage in non-deviant, pro-social occupations. The third theme “We will be
the change” depicted the participants’ perceptions that change started with themselves and then spread to others. Challenges included
the social and emotional ties to the gang and threats to personal safety.
CONCLUSION: The study provided insight into the transformation that takes place as young men disengage from gangs. Occupational
therapists could create opportunities for supportive development through occupational engagement to assist young men to disengage
from gangs and transform their lives
The National Early Warning Score and its subcomponents recorded within ±24 hours of emergency medical admission are poor predictors of hospital-acquired acute kidney injury
YesBackground: Hospital-acquired Acute Kidney Injury (H-AKI) is a common cause of avoidable morbidity and mortality.
Aim: To determine if the patients’ vital signs data as defined by a National Early Warning Score (NEWS), can predict H-AKI following emergency admission to hospital.
Methods: Analyses of emergency admissions to York hospital over 24-months with NEWS data. We report the area under the curve (AUC) for logistic regression models that used the index NEWS (model A0), plus age and sex (A1), plus subcomponents of NEWS (A2) and two-way interactions (A3). Likewise for maximum NEWS (models B0,B1,B2,B3).
Results: 4.05% (1361/33608) of emergency admissions had H-AKI. Models using the index NEWS had the lower AUCs (0.59 to 0.68) than models using the maximum NEWS AUCs (0.75 to 0.77). The maximum NEWS model (B3) was more sensitivity than the index NEWS model (A0) (67.60% vs 19.84%) but identified twice as many cases as being at risk of H-AKI (9581 vs 4099) at a NEWS of 5.
Conclusions: The index NEWS is a poor predictor of H-AKI. The maximum NEWS is a better predictor but seems unfeasible because it is only knowable in retrospect and is associated with a substantial increase in workload albeit with improved sensitivity.The Health Foundatio

Harmonic dependence of thermal magnetic particle imaging
Abstract Advances in instrumentation and tracer materials are still required to enable sensitive, accurate, and localized in situ 3D temperature monitoring by magnetic particle imaging (MPI). We have developed a high-resolution magnetic particle imaging instrument and implemented a low-noise multi-harmonic lock-in detection method to observe and quantify temperature variations in iron oxide nanoparticle tracers using the harmonic ratio method for determining temperature. Using isolated harmonics for MPI and temperature imaging revealed an apparent dependence of imaging resolution on harmonic number. Thus, we present experimental and simulation studies to quantify the imaging resolution dependence on temperature and harmonic number, and directly validate the fundamental origin of MPI imaging resolution on harmonic number based on the concept of a harmonic point-spread-function

A Model Partnership: Mentoring Underrepresented Students in Medicine (URiM) in Emergency Medicine
Introduction: Creating a racially and ethnically diverse workforce remains a challenge for medical specialties, including emergency medicine (EM). One area to examine is a partnership between a predominantly white institution (PWI) with a historically black college and university (HBCU) to determine whether this partnership would increase the number of underrepresented in medicine (URiM) in EM who are from a HBCU.Methods: Twenty years ago Emory Department of Emergency Medicine began its collaboration with Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) to provide guidance to MSM students who were interested in EM. Since its inception, our engagement and intervention has evolved over time to include mentorship and guidance from the EM clerkship director, program director, and key faculty.Results: Since the beginning of the MSM-Emory EM partnership, 115 MSM students have completed an EM clerkship at Emory. Seventy-two of those students (62.6%) have successfully matched into an EM residency program. Of those who matched into EM, 22 (32%) have joined the Emory EM residency program with the remaining 50 students matching at 40 other EM programs across the nation.Conclusion: Based on our experience and outcomes with the Emory-MSM partnership, we are confident that a partnership with an HBCU school without an EM residency should be considered by residency programs to increase the number of URiM students in EM, which could perhaps translate to other specialties
