    How to Compute Modulo Prime-Power Sums

    The problem of computing modulo prime-power sums is investigated in distributed source coding as well as computation over Multiple-Access Channel (MAC). We build upon group codes and present a new class of codes called Quasi Group Codes (QGC). A QGC is a subset of a group code. These codes are not closed under the group addition. We investigate some properties of QGC's, and provide a packing and a covering bound. Next, we use these bounds to derived achievable rates for distributed source coding as well as computation over MAC. We show that strict improvements over the previously known schemes can be obtained using QGC's

    A New Achievable Rate Region for Multiple-Access Channel with States

    The problem of reliable communication over the multiple-access channel (MAC) with states is investigated. We propose a new coding scheme for this problem which uses quasi-group codes (QGC). We derive a new computable single-letter characterization of the achievable rate region. As an example, we investigate the problem of doubly-dirty MAC with modulo-44 addition. It is shown that the sum-rate R1+R2=1R_1+R_2=1 bits per channel use is achievable using the new scheme. Whereas, the natural extension of the Gel'fand-Pinsker scheme, sum-rates greater than 0.320.32 are not achievable.Comment: 13 pages, ISIT 201

    Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry diagnostic discordance between Z scores and T scores in a young Iranian population

    Background: Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is considered the gold standard for non-invasive measurement of bone mass. T-scores and Z-scores are used to present the results of bone mass. The present study was designed to evaluate the discordance between T-scores and Z-scores calculated at a same level and its relation with age, gender and body mass index (BMI) in a representative sample of normal population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted as a part of a comprehensive survey, Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (IMOS), designed to assess bone health among healthy adults. Each individual underwent both L1–L4 antero-posterior lumbar spine and hip DXA scan. The difference between the T- and Z-scores measured at each of the four skeletal sites was then calculated. Results: A -1.21 to 1.21 point difference was noted in the Z- and T- scores measured at each site. While the difference between the T- and Z-scores was less than 0.5 SD in most of the cases, the difference was higher than 1 SD in about 5% of the subjects. Conclusion: Standardization of Z-score definition and calculation techniques as well as developing an ethnicity-matched reference population is needed to improve the reliability of DXA-generated Z-scores

    Adaptive control design for a synchronous generator

    The operating point of a power system changes to an unknown point with an unknown change in the mechanical input power. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive controller is designed for excitation system of the generator based on the backstepping control technique, in order to achieve transient stability enhancement, in the presence of uncertainties in mechanical power. The designed controller guarantees the convergence of system states to new desired values corresponding to unknown mechanical power. A power system consisting of a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus through a double circuit transmission line is used in control design and the simulation studies. Computer simulation verifies the effectiveness and the validity of the proposed control, considering faulted system with a clearance and change in network topology. © 2014, Editura Academiei Romane.     Adsorption of diazinon from aqueous solutions onto an activated carbon sample produced in Iran

    Background: Considering the severe health and environmental hazards caused by the entry of diazinon toxin into water resources, its removal is very important. Given the high costs of imported adsorbents, this research attempted to evaluate, for the first time, the efficiency of Iranian activated carbon in removing diazinon from aqueous solutions. Methods: In this batch experimental study, the effects of contact time (5-90 minutes), adsorbent concentration (0.5-30 g/L), initial concentration of diazinon (5-50 mg/L), and pH (3-10) on the adsorption of diazinon onto the activated carbon were evaluated. Concentrations of diazinon were measured using a high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) instrument. The specific surface area of the adsorbent was determined by BET and BJH methods. The experimental adsorption data was analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order kinetics models were employed to determine kinetics. Moreover, data was analyzed using SPSS version 19, and Pearson correlation and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were performed at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The optimum contact time, sorbent dose, and pH were 30 minutes, 10 g/L, and 5, respectively. The adsorbent could adsorb diazinon with a removal efficiency of 92.5% under optimum conditions (initial concentration: 20 mg/L). The experimental data was better described by the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm. A maximum adsorption capacity of 71.4 mg/g was calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model

    Female Cancer Patients’ Perceptions regarding Health-related Behaviors: A Qualitative Analysis

    Background: Cancer is a growing challenge worldwide. Although it affects both sexes, women tend to be more vulnerable to it than men. This study aims to elucidate the perceptions of women afflicted with cancer regarding health-related behaviors. Methods: This is a qualitative study with content analysis. Participants included 22 women with cancer in Tehran. The participants were recruited by purposive sampling and were administered semi-structured, face-to-face interviews. The interviews were transcribed and reviewed to yield the findings. Initially, semantic resemblances and differences were reviewed and subcategories were defined. Subsequently, after repeated review, the related subcategories were placed in one category. Results: The participants in this study were aged 27 to 65 years, most were married (14 women) and homemakers (20 women). Moreover, their education ranged from elementary school to a bachelor’s degree. Regarding cancer type, most were diagnosed with breast cancer (12 women) and the duration of the disease ranged 2-5 years. Data analysis yielded 2 categories and 4 subcategories. The category “physical health-related behaviors” consisted of two subcategories: “health-related behaviors pertaining to physical activities after cancer” and “physical activities after treatment”. The category “psychosocial health-related behaviors” consisted of two subcategories: “mental health-related behaviors” and “socio-cultural health-related behaviors”. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the fact in order to improve the health of women with cancer, aspects of health other than physical health (e.g. psychosocial health) need to be addressed. Since, according to our findings, health-related behaviors of women with cancer are deeply affected by culture, it appears that countering the cultural taboos pertaining to cancer will improve these women’s health. Achieving this outcome requires extensive cultural interventions in the healthcare system. We propose community-based educational interventions to correct cultural beliefs of the community to improve health for this vulnerable group

    Agricultural business is a very high-risk job and an increase demand for agricultural products from one side and steady increase in production cost and weather changes, on the other side, have motivated many to use insurance for agricultural products. Insurance plays an important role in influencing crop production and insured satisfaction or farmers. The purpose of this research is to find critical components in agricultural insurance. Based on an exploration of the literature review and interviews, the proposed study of this paper extracts 24 variables and using factor analysis, we select the most important factors, which are grouped in seven categories. The implementation of our factor analysis has revealed uncertainty, moderator, market equilibrium, risky environment, empowering factor, education, training, structural hazards and natural ecosystems as the most important factors influencing agricultural industry
