    Ambulatory mental healthcare for children and youth in child welfare services: a scoping review

    Formålet med denne systematiske kartleggingsoversikten var å undersøke hva som fins av forskning om ambulant psykisk helsehjelp for barn og unge i barnevernet. Ambulant psykisk helsehjelp forstås her som psykisk helsehjelp eller behandling som finner sted i barn og unges eget miljø. Vi utførte en kartleggingsoversikt (scoping review). Det er en type kunnskapsoppsummering som kartlegger og narrativt beskriver eksisterende forskningsgrunnlag på et bestemt temaområde. Vi kartla studier hvor ambulant psykisk helsehjelp gis til barn og unge (0-18 år) med tiltak fra barnevernet. Vi kunne inkludere studier fra Norge, Sverige, Danmark, Finland og Nederland, publisert 2015-2023. To studier møtte inklusjonskriteriene. Begge var fra Norge og publisert i løpet av de siste par årene. En studie omhandlet Stillasbyggerne og den andre undersøkte omfang av og erfaringer med ambulant psykisk helsehjelp i barnevernsinstitusjoner i Norge. Kun i den ene studien var fire ungdommers egne erfaringer omtalt. De viktigste funnene er: • Det fins svært begrenset med forskning på ambulant psykisk helsehjelp gitt eksplisitt til barn og unge med tiltak i barnevernet. • Barn og unge deltar i liten grad i forskningen som foreligger på ambulant psykisk helsehjelp. Det er behov for en betydelig forskningsinnsats om ambulant psykisk helsehjelp for barn og unge i barnevernet.     Exploring experiences of the regulatory toxicology system:system‑level promoters and inhibitors of new approach methodologies

    The transition from traditional animal-based approaches and assessments to New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) marks a scientific revolution in regulatory toxicology, with the potential of enhancing human and environmental protection. However, implementing the effective use of NAMs in regulatory toxicology has proven to be challenging, and so far, efforts to facilitate this change frequently focus on singular technical, psychological or economic inhibitors. This article takes a system-thinking approach to these challenges, a holistic framework for describing interactive relationships between the components of a system of interest. In this case, the regulatory toxicology system. We do so by analysing and interpreting a very large qualitative data set of experts’ observations, collected in a 3-day interactive workshop and three follow-up online workshops with a heterogeneous sample of experts representing major actors from the global regulatory toxicology system. We identified leverage points (where a small change within a system can have a disproportionately large effect) in the six core aspects—infrastructure, processes, culture, technology, goals, and actors—in the regulatory toxicology system to facilitate the effective use of NAMs. Identified systematic leverage points include the need for a functioning incentive structure for effectively discovering, developing, validating and using NAMs within academia, regulation, and industry; and measures that prevent or mitigate unwanted effects of using NAMs that acknowledge clashes between scientific, regulatory, political and social processes. The results serve as a basis for follow-up activities that reflect on the actual effectiveness of these levers and that develop measures for the regulatory toxicology system

    Reflections: Students\u27 Tribute to Stan Kuczaj (1950-2016)

    On April 14th, 2016, Animal Behavior and Cognition lost its Editor-in-Chief. But the scientific community and the friends and colleagues of Stanley ‘Stan’ Kuczaj III lost so much more. As many know, Stan began his career in Developmental Psychology, making enormous contributions in the area of language development, but became best known for his many innovative contributions in the area of marine mammal behavior. Stan founded Animal Behavior and Cognition because he was deeply passionate about research with a broad range of topics concerning animal behavior, animal cognition, and animal welfare. He was equally passionate about the idea that science should be accessible to all, and that accessibility should not come at a financial burden to researchers. The current editorial team is committed to carrying on Stan’s vision for the journal, and we believe that its continuation will pay homage to Stan as a researcher, and as a leader within the scientific community. However, for the next few pages, we wish to pay special tribute to Stan as a mentor, as this role was perhaps the one that was most pivotal in defining who he was as a scientist, colleague, and friend. We take comfort in the fact that Stan’s memory will live on in the legacy of his mentees, many of whom became cherished friends and colleagues. Below you will find reflections from several of these former students who were given the difficult task of trying to summarize the most meaningful aspect of Stan’s influence on their personal and professional development. Although no few words could summarize the impact of someone as enigmatic as Stan, we hope that these reflections will contribute to a full and nuanced tribute to the man he was

    Associations of Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardant Exposures during Pregnancy with Gestational Duration and Fetal Growth: The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program

    BACKGROUND: Widespread exposure to organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants with potential reproductive toxicity raises concern regarding the impacts of gestational exposure on birth outcomes. Previous studies of prenatal OPE exposure and birth outcomes had limited sample sizes, with inconclusive results. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a collaborative analysis of associations between gestational OPE exposures and adverse birth outcomes and tested whether associations were modified by sex. METHODS: We included 6,646 pregnant participants from 16 cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program. Nine OPE biomarkers were quantified in maternal urine samples collected primarily during the second and third trimester and modeled as log2-transformed continuous, categorized (high/low/nondetect), or dichotomous (detect/nondetect) variables depending on detection frequency. We used covariate-adjusted linear, logistic, and multinomial regression with generalized estimating equations, accounting for cohort-level clustering, to estimate associations of OPE biomarkers with gestational length and birth weight outcomes. Secondarily, we assessed effect modification by sex. RESULTS: Three OPE biomarkers [diphenyl phosphate (DPHP), a composite of dibutyl phosphate and di-isobutyl phosphate (DBUP/DIBP), and bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate] were detected in >85% of participants. In adjusted models, DBUP/DIBP [odds ratio (OR) per doubling=1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02, 1.12] and bis(butoxyethyl) phosphate (OR for high vs. nondetect=1.25; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.46), but not other OPE biomarkers, were associated with higher odds of preterm birth. We observed effect modification by sex for associations of DPHP and high bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate with completed gestational weeks and odds of preterm birth, with adverse associations among females. In addition, newborns of mothers with detectable bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, bis(2-methylphenyl) phosphate, and dipropyl phosphate had higher birth weight-for-gestational-age z-scores (β for detect vs. nondetect=0.04-0.07); other chemicals showed null associations. DISCUSSION: In the largest study to date, we find gestational exposures to several OPEs are associated with earlier timing of birth, especially among female neonates, or with greater fetal growth. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP13182

    Is (poly-) substance use associated with impaired inhibitory control? A mega-analysis controlling for confounders.

    Many studies have reported that heavy substance use is associated with impaired response inhibition. Studies typically focused on associations with a single substance, while polysubstance use is common. Further, most studies compared heavy users with light/non-users, though substance use occurs along a continuum. The current mega-analysis accounted for these issues by aggregating individual data from 43 studies (3610 adult participants) that used the Go/No-Go (GNG) or Stop-signal task (SST) to assess inhibition among mostly "recreational" substance users (i.e., the rate of substance use disorders was low). Main and interaction effects of substance use, demographics, and task-characteristics were entered in a linear mixed model. Contrary to many studies and reviews in the field, we found that only lifetime cannabis use was associated with impaired response inhibition in the SST. An interaction effect was also observed: the relationship between tobacco use and response inhibition (in the SST) differed between cannabis users and non-users, with a negative association between tobacco use and inhibition in the cannabis non-users. In addition, participants' age, education level, and some task characteristics influenced inhibition outcomes. Overall, we found limited support for impaired inhibition among substance users when controlling for demographics and task-characteristics
