The well-being of the child is a common criterion in many Polish normative regulations pertaining to different branches of law. It is both a tool for the law-making and the executive bodies, employed to direct the law-applying bodies towards ensuring full protection of the child. This article is focused on analysing interpretative judicial discretion with respect to the well-being of the child as manifested in the judicial decisions of the Supreme Court and in the judgements of the Supreme Administrative Court and Constitutional Tribunal. In the course of the research, the author undertakes to determine the essence of interpretative judicial discretion in cases predominantly focused on establishing the current and postulated situation of the child with a view to ensuring the most favourable ruling for the same.

Choice of the Empirical Definition of Zero in the Translog Multiproduct Cost Functional Form

This study examines the impacts of empirical definition of zero output values on price elasticities, economy of scope, and scale using the Translog cost function. A system of cost and factor share equations with regularity conditions imposed is estimated. Results show that the choice of default values affects policy recommendations.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

PREDICTING HOUSEHOLD WATER CONSUMPTION UNDER A BLOCK PRICE STRUCTURE

    Get PDF
This study focuses on estimating the variations in per-capita water consumption and predicting the shares of consumption by pricing blocks in eight Kansas regions. Previous studies have considered household or micro-level consumption, but few have focused on aggregate level consumption across different regions. A probit model was used to estimate the consumption shares in individual blocks for each region. Per-capita water consumption varies significantly across the regions and as we move from Western to Eastern Kansas, shares of lower consumption block decrease and higher consumption block likely to increase.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

An Analysis of Early Renal Transplant Protocol Biopsies - the High Incidence of Subclinical Tubulitis

    Get PDF
To investigate the possibility that we have been underestimating the true incidence of acute rejection, we began to perform protocol biopsies after kidney transplantation. This analysis looks at the one-week biopsies. Between March 1 and October 1, 1999, 100 adult patients undergoing cadaveric kidney or kidney/pancreas transplantation, or living donor kidney transplantation, underwent 277 biopsies. We focused on the subset of biopsies in patients without delayed graft function (DGF) and with stable or improving renal function, who underwent a biopsy 8.2 ± 2.6 d (range 3-18 d) after transplantation (n = 28). Six (21%) patients with no DGF and with stable or Improving renal function had borderline histopathology, and 7 (25%) had acute tubulitis on the one-week biopsy. Of the 277 kidney biopsies, there was one (0.4%) serious hemorrhagic complication, in a patient receiving low molecular weight heparin; she ultimately recovered and has normal renal function. Her biopsy showed Banff 1B tubulitis. In patients with stable or improving renal allograft function early after transplantation, subclinical tubulitis may be present in a substantial number of patients. This suggests that the true incidence of rejection may be higher than is clinically appreciated

Engfi Gate: An Indoor Guidance System using Marker-based Cyber-Physical Augmented-Reality

    Get PDF
A guidance system is needed when freshmen explore their new building environment. With the advancements of mobile technologies, a guidance system using mobile computing devices such as mobile phones or tablets could aid freshmen in locating the desired destination with ease. The proposed system consists of three main subsystems: the marker-based cyber-physical interaction (CPI) system, the indoor positioning (IP) system, and the augmented-reality (AR) system. With the help of visible markers and invisible markers, the CPI system allows the users to do interactions between the physical and cyber environments; the IP system produces accurate user position information; the AR system provides the users with good user experiences. An Android application, named Engfi Gate, is developed to realize the system design in the test environment. This paper also shows the comparisons of the proposed system with other related systems. Furthermore, the design architecture of Engfi Gate system can be used in other location-based applications

Lontar is a plant that distributed in tropical areas and has beneficial values for the people in Tuamese Village, Biboki Anleu District, North Central Timor Regency. However, the information about the ethnobotany of lontar is not documented. This research aimed to determine the utilization of lontar in Tuamese Village. Data were collected using semi-structured interview techniques and field observation. The ethnobotany data were analyzed to calculate cultural significance index value. The results showed that the people in Tuamese Village who generally work as lontar farmers use stem, leaves, flowers, and fruit as building and fence materials, handicraft materials, food and drink ingredients, and firewood. Product from sap flower, namely liquid sugar, slab sugar, and traditional fermented drink (sopi) are the leading trade commodity. The utilization of lontar in Tuamese Village is grouped into seven forms of utilization with index of cultural significance 151 and classified very high. The classification means that lontar greatly affects people's lives in Tuamese Village and its use has become cultured. People's dependence on lontar is very high so the conservation effort needs to make the existence of lontar is maintained.   Keywords: index cultural significance, lontar, Tuames
