Educational, clinical and counselling psychologists' perceptions of and readiness to incorporate brain technologies into their everyday practices.
The aim of this study was to investigate psychologist’s perceptions and willingness to incorporate brain technologies, such as Neurofeedback and qEEG (quantitative electroencephalography), into everyday practice. This research was considered important as numerous studies on the benefits of using these technologies have been documented, yet despite this not many psychologists have incorporated them into their practices. The sample consisted of 50 psychologists in Gauteng who completed a self- administered questionnaire. The data collected was analysed using Thematic content analysis and the emerging themes were examined in line with the research aims.
Results from the study indicate that Psychologists’ knowledge and understanding of the brain technologies are limited, more so in the case of qEEG than with Neurotherapy. Resistance towards the incorporation of the technologies is present. The main causes of resistance appear to be related towards a number of concerns or reservations held by psychologists. Amongst these were the need for more research in terms of efficacy and concerns about costs of equipment, training and accreditation. Despite some of the resistance present, psychologists seem to perceive the technologies as useful in treating attention, concentration, learning, anxiety and mood disorders. Psychologists stated that they were generally open to receiving further education and training on these technologies. The study looked at the suggestions and comments made by psychologists concerning what they considered necessary to aid in the incorporation of these technologies

Identifying the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice of the Purchasing and Consumption of Pulses across a Sample of UK Adult Population
The UK is experiencing an increasingly overweight and obese population. Alongside this is the world-wide need to create a more sustainable food supply. Moving people to a diet rich in pulses (legumes that are harvested as dry grains) is considered a way forward as they are sustainable, provide health benefits and ease the burden on public health. However, there is very little research on pulse consumption within the UK. Most research has covered clusters of European countries. The aim of the study is to identify patterns in the consumption of pulses within different socio-demographic groups; establish the population’s general knowledge of pulses; identify specific barriers to and drivers for the consumption of pulses; identify common practices in the consumption of pulses and from which retailers’ pluses are regularly purchased. The qualitative and quantitative data was collected using an online survey. Results: More participants consumed pulses (n=59) than not (n=2). Participants consumed higher levels of pulses than established previously in a Pan-European study in 2022. Despite high familiarity of pulses and high frequency of consumption, a small variety of pulses (red kidney beans and chickpeas) were consumed. Health was the main driver and identifier for consuming pulses, especially in the over 40 years demographic. Most participants reported themselves as omnivores yet ate high levels of pulses and used pulses as a replacement for meat protein. The study provides strong evidence for linking health and pulse consumption when promoting pulses to in the age group 40 years and over. The small variety of pulses consumed points to further research being undertaken to understand why. Further research is also required get a better understanding of the barriers to and drivers for the consumption of pulses from a larger sample with greater socio-demographic diversity
In vitro efficacy of tavaborole topical solution, 5% after penetration through nail polish on ex vivo human fingernails

Patients often wish to mask their infection with nail polish yet there is no evidence to suggest antifungal efficacy in the presence of nail polish. Objective: To determine if tavaborole retains the ability to penetrate the nail plate and inhibit fungal growth in the presence of nail polish. Method: Tavaborole was applied to human fingernails painted with 2 or 4 coats of nail polish, and unpainted nails in an ex vivo model. Nails were mounted on TurChub ® chambers seeded with Trichophyton rubrum and allowed to incubate for 7 days. Antifungal activity was assessed by measuring zones of inhibition. Results and conclusion: Tavaborole exhibited antifungal activity in all experimental groups. The zones of inhibition of T. rubrum for all experimental groups (2 or 4 coats of polish, unpolished) were greater than infected controls (polished and unpolished), p s <.001. Tavaborole penetrates polished nails and kills T. rubrum in this ex vivo model.Peer reviewe

Latent profiles of home behaviour problems in Trinidad and Tobago.
Caregivers who interact with children at home can provide a critical, complementary perspective on a childs behaviour functioning. This research used a parent-administered measure of problem behaviours to study perceptions of child behaviours across home situations. We applied latent profile analysis to identify subgroups of children with common behavioural tendencies in a nationally representative sample (N = 709) of 4- to 13-year-old children in Trinidad and Tobago. This study (a) identified latent profiles of childrens over- and underactive behaviour problems in varied home settings and (b) examined how profile membership predicted academic skills and teacher-observed problem behaviours. The best-fitting four-profile model included one profile of adjusted behaviours (56%), one of the elevated attention-seeking behaviours (21%), a profile featuring withdrawn and disengaged behaviours (15%) and a relatively rare profile emphasising aggressive behaviours (8%). Children classified in the last profile displayed the poorest academic outcomes and the highest levels of teacher-observed behaviour problems
How Supervisors Influence Performance: A Multilevel Study of Coaching and Group Management in Technology-Mediated Services
This multilevel study examines the role of supervisors in improving employee performance through the use of coaching and group management practices. It examines the individual and synergistic effects of these management practices. The research subjects are call center agents in highly standardized jobs, and the organizational context is one in which calls, or task assignments, are randomly distributed via automated technology, providing a quasi-experimental approach in a real-world context. Results show that the amount of coaching that an employee received each month predicted objective performance improvements over time. Moreover, workers exhibited higher performance where their supervisor emphasized group assignments and group incentives and where technology was more automated. Finally, the positive relationship between coaching and performance was stronger where supervisors made greater use of group incentives, where technology was less automated, and where technological changes were less frequent. Implications and potential limitations of the present study are discussed
The evolutionary dynamics of variant antigen genes in Babesia reveal a history of genomic innovation underlying host-parasite interaction
Babesia spp. are tick-borne, intraerythrocytic hemoparasites that use antigenic variation to resist host immunity, through sequential modification of the parasite-derived variant erythrocyte surface antigen (VESA) expressed on the infected red blood cell surface. We identified the genomic processes driving antigenic diversity in genes encoding VESA (ves1) through comparative analysis within and between three Babesia species, (B. bigemina, B. divergens and B. bovis). Ves1 structure diverges rapidly after speciation, notably through the evolution of shortened forms (ves2) from 5′ ends of canonical ves1 genes. Phylogenetic analyses show that ves1 genes are transposed between loci routinely, whereas ves2 genes are not. Similarly, analysis of sequence mosaicism shows that recombination drives variation in ves1 sequences, but less so for ves2, indicating the adoption of different mechanisms for variation of the two families. Proteomic analysis of the B. bigemina PR isolate shows that two dominant VESA1 proteins are expressed in the population, whereas numerous VESA2 proteins are co-expressed, consistent with differential transcriptional regulation of each family. Hence, VESA2 proteins are abundant and previously unrecognized elements of Babesia biology, with evolutionary dynamics consistently different to those of VESA1, suggesting that their functions are distinct
Probing the Solution Structure of IκB Kinase (IKK) Subunit γ and Its Interaction with Kaposi Sarcoma-associated Herpes Virus Flice-interacting Protein and IKK Subunit β by EPR Spectroscopy.
Viral flice-interacting protein (vFLIP), encoded by the oncogenic Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), constitutively activates the canonical nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway. This is achieved through subversion of the IκB kinase (IKK) complex (or signalosome), which involves a physical interaction between vFLIP and the modulatory subunit IKKγ. Although this interaction has been examined both in vivo and in vitro, the mechanism by which vFLIP activates the kinase remains to be determined. Because IKKγ functions as a scaffold, recruiting both vFLIP and the IKKα/β subunits, it has been proposed that binding of vFLIP could trigger a structural rearrangement in IKKγ conducive to activation. To investigate this hypothesis we engineered a series of mutants along the length of the IKKγ molecule that could be individually modified with nitroxide spin labels. Subsequent distance measurements using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with molecular modeling and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that IKKγ is a parallel coiled-coil whose response to binding of vFLIP or IKKβ is localized twisting/stiffening and not large-scale rearrangements. The coiled-coil comprises N- and C-terminal regions with distinct registers accommodated by a twist: this structural motif is exploited by vFLIP, allowing it to bind and subsequently activate the NF-κB pathway. In vivo assays confirm that NF-κB activation by vFLIP only requires the N-terminal region up to the transition between the registers, which is located directly C-terminal of the vFLIP binding site
Career orientations and career cultures : individual and organisational approaches to beginning teachers’ careers
Despite the very large literature on teacher careers from an individual perspective, there is relatively little that links the perspectives of teachers themselves to how schools as organisations approach careers. The aim of this paper is, first, to outline how teachers’ orientations towards careers change across three dimensions, and, second, to examine how schools as organisations deal with career, developing a model of organisational responses, including developing a concept of ‘career culture’, derived from an analysis of interviews regarding the first three years of teaching conducted with senior leaders and second year teachers themselves. By considering the fit between individuals’ career orientations and school career cultures, the paper surfaces both the fluid nature of these orientations and the subsequent potential instability of the fit
Standards for the provision of antenatal care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease: guidance endorsed by the British Society of Gastroenterology and the British Maternal and Fetal Medicine Society
Background: Pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Comprehensive guidelines on medical management have been published; yet, there is limited guidance on service set-up and minimum standards of care for pregnant women with IBD. Aim: To develop a position statement on service set-up and minimum standards of care in the UK. Methods: A working group consisting of 16 gastroenterologists, obstetricians, obstetric physician, IBD specialist nurses and midwives was assembled. Initial draft statements were produced and a modified Delphi process with two rounds of voting applied. Statements were modified according to voters’ feedback after each round. Statements with ≥80% agreement were accepted. Results: All 15 statements met criteria for inclusion. To facilitate optimal care, regular and effective communication between IBD and obstetric teams is required. There should be nominated link clinicians for IBD in obstetric units and for pregnancy in IBD units. Preconception counselling should be available for all women with IBD. All pregnant women should be advised on the safety of IBD medication during pregnancy and breast feeding, the optimal mode of delivery, the management of biologics (where applicable) and safety of childhood vaccinations. Regular audit of pregnancy outcomes and documentation of advice given is recommended. Conclusion: Position statements have been developed that advise on the importance of joined-up multidisciplinary care, proactive decision-making with clear documentation and communication to the woman and other healthcare practitioners
