Cost-effectiveness analysis of vaccination strategies against meningococcal disease for children under nine years of age in China

Meningococcal vaccination strategies in China are intricate, including multiple vaccines targeting different serogroups. The current National Immunization Program (NIP) includes two polysaccharide vaccines for serogroups A and C (MPV-A and MPV-AC), covering limited serogroups and requiring adaptation. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of replacing the current strategy with alternative strategies utilizing non-NIP vaccines to inform policy decisions. From a societal perspective, a decision tree-Markov model was constructed to simulate the economic and health consequences of meningococcal disease in a 2019 birth cohort with four vaccination strategies. Epidemiology, vaccine efficacy, cost, and other parameters were derived from previous studies. We conducted sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the findings and explored prices for non-NIP vaccines that enable cost-effective strategies. Compared to the current strategy, alternative strategies using quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine (MPV-4), bivalent conjugate vaccine (MCV-AC), and quadrivalent conjugate vaccine (MCV-4) could avoid 91, 286, and 455 more meningococcal cases. The ICERs were estimated at approximately 250thousand/QALY,250 thousand/QALY, 450 thousand/QALY, and 1.5million/QALY,allexceedingthethresholdofthreetimesGDPpercapita.Thealternativestrategieswerenotcost−effective.However,ifvaccinepriceswerereducedto1.5 million/QALY, all exceeding the threshold of three times GDP per capita. The alternative strategies were not cost-effective. However, if vaccine prices were reduced to 3.9 for MPV-4, 9.9forMCV−AC,and9.9 for MCV-AC, and 12 for MCV-4, the corresponding strategy would be cost-effective. The current meningococcal vaccination strategy in China could effectively prevent the disease at a low cost, but with limited serogroup coverage. Strategies using MPV-4, MCV-AC, or MCV-4 could increase health benefits at a substantial cost, and might become cost-effective if vaccine prices decrease.</p

<p>Proper proliferation and differentiation of neural progenitors (NPs) in the developing cerebral cortex are critical for normal brain formation and function. Emerging evidence has shown the importance of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating cortical development and the etiology of neurological disorders. Here we show that miR-26 is co-expressed with its host gene Ctdsp in the mouse embryonic cortex. We demonstrate that similar to its host gene Ctdsp2, miR-26 positively regulates proliferation of NPs through controlling the cell-cycle progression, by using miR-26 overexpression and sponge approaches. On the contrary, miR-26 target gene Emx2 limits expansion of cortical NPs, and promotes transcription of miR-26 host gene Ctdsp. Our study suggests that miR-26, its target Emx2 and its host gene Ctdsp cohesively regulate proliferation of NPs during the mouse cortical development.</p

Stable Dispersions of PVP-Protected Au/Pt/Ag Trimetallic Nanoparticles as Highly Active Colloidal Catalysts for Aerobic Glucose Oxidation

A simple, effective method has been demonstrated to synthesize Au/Pt/Ag trimetallic nanoparticles (TNPs) with an average diameter of 1.5 nm by reduction of the corresponding ions with rapid injection of NaBH4. The prepared TNPs were characterized by UV–vis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy in high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The activity of the TNPs is several times higher than that of Au NPs with nearly the same particle size. The high catalytic activities of the Au/Pt/Ag TNPs can be ascribed to the following factors: (1) the small average size, about 1.5 nm in diameter, and (2) the formed negatively charged Au atoms due to electron donation of Ag neighboring atoms and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) acting as catalytically active sites for aerobic glucose oxidation. The presence of the negatively charged Au atoms was supported by XPS measurements and electron density calculation with density functional theory

Protein Expression Profiles Characterize Distinct Features of Mouse Cerebral Cortices at Different Developmental Stages

    No full text
<div><p>The proper development of the mammalian cerebral cortex requires precise protein synthesis and accurate regulation of protein expression levels. To reveal signatures of protein expression in developing mouse cortices, we here generate proteomic profiles of cortices at embryonic and postnatal stages using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). We found that protein expression profiles are mostly consistent with biological features of the developing cortex. Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway analyses demonstrate conserved molecules that maintain cortical development such as proteins involved in metabolism. GO and KEGG pathway analyses further identify differentially expressed proteins that function at specific stages, for example proteins regulating the cell cycle in the embryonic cortex, and proteins controlling axon guidance in the postnatal cortex, suggesting that distinct protein expression profiles determine biological events in the developing cortex. Furthermore, the STRING network analysis has revealed that many proteins control a single biological event, such as the cell cycle regulation, through cohesive interactions, indicating a complex network regulation in the cortex. Our study has identified protein networks that control the cortical development and has provided a protein reference for further investigation of protein interactions in the cortex.</p></div
