CTMC calculations of electron capture and ionization in collisions of multiply charged ions with elliptical Rydberg atoms
We have performed classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) studies of electron
capture and ionization in multiply charged (Q=8) ion-Rydberg atom collisions at
intermediate impact velocities. Impact parallel to the minor and to the major
axis, respectively, of the initial Kepler electron ellipse has been
investigated. The important role of the initial electron momentum distribution
found for singly charged ion impact is strongly disminished for higher
projectile charge, while the initial spatial distribution remains important for

Mid-infrared and optical spectroscopy of ultraluminous infrared galaxies: A comparison
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy
have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured
ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications -
starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) - with classifications from optical
spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line
regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classification is
excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The
starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion that LINER
spectra in infrared-selected galaxies, rather than being an expression of the
AGN phenomenon, are due to shocks that are probably related to galactic
superwinds. Differences between ISO and optical classification provide clues on
the evolution of ULIRGs and on the configuration of obscuring dust. We find few
ISO AGN with optical HII or LINER identification, suggesting that highly
obscured AGN exist but are not typical for the ULIRG phenomenon in general.
Rather, our results indicate that strong AGN activity, once triggered, quickly
breaks the obscuring screen at least in certain directions, thus becoming

Mid-Infrared line diagnostics of Active Galaxies -- A spectroscopic AGN survey with ISO-SWS
We present medium resolution (R approx. 1500) ISO-SWS 2.4--45 micron spectra
of a sample of 29 galaxies with active nuclei. This data set is rich in fine
structure emission lines tracing the narrow line regions and (circum-)nuclear
star formation regions, and it provides a coherent spectroscopic reference for
future extragalactic studies in the mid-infrared. We use the data set to
briefly discuss the physical conditions in the narrow line regions (density,
temperature, excitation, line profiles) and to test for possible differences
between AGN sub-types. Our main focus is on new tools for determining the
propertibes of dusty galaxies and on the AGN-starburst connection. We present
mid-IR line ratio diagrams which can be used to identify composite (starburst +
AGN) sources and to distinguish between emission excited by active nuclei and
emission from (circum-nuclear) star forming regions. For instance, line ratios
of high to low excitation lines like [O IV]25.9um/[Ne II]12.8um, that have been
used to probe for AGNs in dusty objects, can be examined in more detail and
with better statistics now. In addition, we present two-dimensional diagnostic
diagrams that are fully analogous to classical optical diagnostic diagrams, but
better suited for objects with high extinction. Finally, we discuss
correlations of mid-infrared line fluxes to the mid- and far-infrared
continuum. We compare these relations to similar relations in starburst
galaxies in order to examine the contribution of AGNs to the bolometric
luminosities of their host galaxies. The spectra are available in electronic

Evaluation of the QBC-vet autoread haematology system for domestic and pet animal species
A comprehensive evaluation was initiated to determine the suitability of the QBC-Vet Autoread haematology system for veterinary purposes in domestic and pet animal species. The system determines haematocrit (HCT), haemoglobin (HGB), white blood cell (WBC) count, granulocyte count, combined lymphocyte and monocyte count (L/M), platelet count, as well as eosinophil and neutrophil counts (canine samples only), and reticulocyte count (canine and feline samples only). Linearity assessed for a canine sample usually surpassed the physiological range. Within-batch precision was very good for the majority of the parameters in feline and canine samples: Coefficients of variation (CV) were below 5.5% for HCT, HGB and WBC. In order to test the accuracy of the system with respect to reference methods, a total of 300 blood samples from the Clinics of Internal Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (101 canine, 99 feline and 100 equine) were analysed. Strong linear correlation was demonstrated for HCT, HGB (rτ;/0.96) and WBC (rτ;/0.93) based on high correlation coefficients and narrow confidence intervals. A somewhat higher degree of variation from the estimated regression lines was found in differential blood cell counts, especially for eosinophil counts of the dog where the automated reader erroneously attributed some lymphocytes or monocytes to eosinophil counts. Accuracy of the system was also assessed with respect to clinical relevance of results. The majority of leukocytosis (50 of 53), neutrophilias (3 of 4), or eosinophilias (4 of 5) was detected properly by the QBC-Vet Autoread haematology system, but only 20 out of 35 leukopenic samples were identified correctly. The system detected the presence of reticulocytes in the majority of feline (9 of 10) and canine (6 of 7) samples with a regenerative anaemia. Unexpectedly, platelets of cats were measured with high within-batch precision (mean CV=4.64%). No ‘streaming' effect (no discrimination between erythrocytes and granulocytes) was observed with this advanced QBC system. The system was found to be easy both in handling and interpretation of results. The buffy coat profile appeared particularly useful and informative. In conclusion, the QBC-Vet Autoread-System has excellent analytical properties and is well suited for veterinary purpose
Electronic Structure and Thermoelectric Prospects of Phosphide Skutterudites
The prospects for high thermoelectric performance in phosphide skutterudites
are investigated based on first principles calculations. We find that
stoichiometric CoP_3 differs from the corresponding arsenide and antimonide in
that it is metallic. As such the band structure must be modified if high
thermopowers are to be achieved. In analogy to the antimonides it is expected
that this may be done by filling with La. Calculations for LaFe_4P_12 show that
a gap can in fact be opened by La filling, but that the valence band is too
light to yield reasonable p-type thermopowers at appropriate carrier densities;
