Health Professional Students As Providers Of Behavioral Health Services To Uninsured Immigrants
Using the principles of lay counseling, health professional students were trained to deliver psychosocial educational interventions and administer substance use screenings to uninsured monolingual Spanish-speaking Latino immigrants with symptomatic depression and/or substance use disorders. Changes in depressive symptoms were assessed with the PHQ-9. Twenty-five patients enrolled in the lay counselor program for depression. PHQ-9 data were available from the 15 individuals who completed the program, among whom the mean baseline score was 11.7 (SD = 6.2) and mean final score was 4.6 (SD = 4.2) (
Towards a Lie theory for vertex and conformal algebras
We introduce several definitions within the framework ofvertex and conformal algebras which are analogous to some importantconcepts of the classical Lie theory. Most importantly, we define vertexmanifolds, which correspond to the notion of Lie groups. We provesuitable vertex/conformal versions of a number of classical results suchas the Milnor-Moore theorem, Cartier duality, and Lie's third theoremfor nilpotent Lie algebras.Fil: Boyallian, Carina. Neutropenia febril en Pediatría: ¿qué punto de corte usar?
AbstractObjectiveTo characterize the episodes of febrile neutropenia in children with cancer according to absolute neutrophil count (less than 500 cells/mm3, and between 501 to 1,000 cells/mm3).MethodsWe evaluated a historical cohort of children less than 15 years of age with cancer treated with chemotherapy in a university hospital in Bogotá between January 1, 2007, and September 30, 2010. All the episodes of febrile neutropenia observed in the cohort were identified and characterized, analyzing the initial count of absolute neutrophils and the outcome of each episode. It was considered that the outcome was unfavorable if the patient died or required hospital management by six or more days. Incidence densities for unfavorable outcomes were calculated and frequencies compared according to the count of neutrophils through the chi square (χ2) or the Fisher’s exact test.ResultsNinety one patients (44,551 patient-days at risk) were identified, who presented 56 episodes offebrile neutropenia, 48 (86%) with absolute neutrophil count less than 500 cells/mm3 and eight (14%) with counts between 501 and 1,000 cells/mm3. Of all patients with febrile neutropenia, 62% had unfavorable outcomes, including a deceased patient. The frequency of adverse outcomes was similar in cases with absolute neutrophil counts between zero and 500 cells/mm3 and in those between 501 and 1,000 cells/mm3 (RR=1.29, 95%CI 0.63 to 2.66, p=0.68; Fisher exact test). The frequency of adverse outcomes was slightly higher in solid tumors hemato-lymphoid tumors (RR=1.62, 95%CI 1.04 to 2.79; p=0.067).ConclusionsUsing 1,000 cells/mm3 as a cutoff level for febrile neutropenia allowed us to identify four additional patients with adverse outcomes, including one death. Therefore, we consider appropriate to use absolute neutrophil counts of less than 1,000 cells/mm3 as a cut-off level to define febrile neutropenia in children

ABSTRACT Objective: Determine if there are differences in total protein concentration in the saliva of adults and elderly. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 60 individuals, 30 male and 30 female that were divided in two groups: the first one of 15 male adults and 15 female adults that are between 18 and 39 years old, and the second one is composed of 15 men and 15 women aged 60 years or more. A single sample of unstimulated and stimulated saliva was taken from each subject and protein concentration was measured using the Bradford technique. It was expressed in protein mg / µL of saliva. Then it was calculated the mean and standard deviation and the student's t-test was used in the spanish version of the software SPSS 15.0 for Windows to analyze whether the differences were statistically significant. Results: The total protein concentration in unstimulated saliva showed statiscally significant differences in the entire sample and women (p 0.05). Conclusions: • The total protein concentration in stimulated saliva of adults is lower than in elderly. • The total protein concentration in unstimulated saliva of adults is lower than in elderly
Duodenal intraepithelial lymphocytes of children with cow milk allergy preferentially bind the glycan-binding protein galectin-3
A breakdown in intestinal homeostasis results in inflammatory bowel diseases including coeliac disease and allergy. Galectins, evolutionarily conserved beta-galactoside-binding proteins, can modulate immune-epithelial cell interactions by influencing immune cell fate and cytokine secretion. In this study we investigated the glycosylation signature, as well as the regulated expression of galectin-1 and -3 in human duodenal samples of allergic and non-allergic children. Whereas galectin-1 was predominantly localized in the epithelial compartment (epithelial cells and intraepithelial lymphocytes) and the underlying lamina propria (T cells, macrophages and plasma cells), galectin-3 was mainly expressed by crypt epithelial cells and macrophages in the lamina propria. Remarkably, expression of these galectins was not significantly altered in allergic versus non-allergic patients. Investigation of the glycophenotype of the duodenal inflammatory microenvironment revealed substantial alpha2-6-linked sialic acid bound to galactose in lamina propria plasma cells, macrophages and intraepithelial lymphocytes and significant levels of asialo core 1 O-glycans in CD68+ macrophages and enterocytes. Galectin-1 preferentially bound to neutrophils, plasma cells and enterocytes, while galectin-3 binding sites were mainly distributed on macrophages and intraepithelial lymphocytes. Notably, galectin-3, but not galectin-1 binding, was substantially increased in intraepithelial gut lymphocytes of allergic patients compared to non-allergic subjects, suggesting a potential role of galectin-3-glycan interactions in shaping epithelial-immune cell connections during allergic inflammatory processes.Fil: Mercer, Natalia. Concept Connectivity: An Educational and Research Framework for Scientific Learning in Optics, Photonics, and Electronic Education
We present a novel framework referred to as Concept Connectivity that aids in educating and engaging students by presenting the topic of the Special Theory of Relativity (STR) in a coherent and unified manner. It uses different analogue implementations of the STR coming from seemingly distinct fields of study such as (i) Optics, (ii) Photonics, and (iii) Electronics to connect not only to the concepts of the STR but to the various concepts from these different fields. In these analogue implementations, the fundamental characteristics of the different STR phenomena can be mimicked in many different ways. Concept Connectivity has two major benefits. First, from an educational perspective, undergraduate students can (i) understand advanced physical phenomena (like STR) from different points of view, (ii) bridge together different learnings or concepts from Physics, Optics, Photonics, and Electronics, and (iii) learn hands-on knowledge and engineering skills from Optics and Electronic experimentations when these analogues are incorporated in undergraduate physics lectures and laboratory courses. In this way, Concept Connectivity contributes to the growing pedagogical approaches used in science education with an emphasis on Photonics, Optics and Electronics. Second, from a research perspective, Concept Connectivity provides undergraduate students with a rare taste of research experience related to the challenge of merging different concepts in STR using principles in Optics, Photonics, and Electronics
SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCIÓN DE ACUACULTURA CON RECIRCULACIÓN DE AGUA PARA LA REGIÓN NORTE, NORESTE Y NOROESTE DE MÉXICO
Aquaculture is expanding and developing in practically all the regions of the world. The demand of the world-wide population by aquatic products is increasing, whereas the production from capture of fisheries has been being reduced, reaching many of them their maximum productive potential. As result of, sustaining fish supplies from capture fisheries it will not be possible to meet the growing global demand for aquatic food. Therefore, the aquaculture seems to have the potential to make a significant contribution to the production of these foods, in order to meet the growing population demand. Nevertheless, in order to accomplish it, the producer faces critical challenges. The development of these activities intensifies substantially, and requires to be diversified, producing new species and creating new systems and practices of production. The production systems of aquatic animals, particularly those based on technologies of water recirculation, appears to be an excellent alternative for producing, in regions of the North of Mexico, in where the water is scarce.Aquaculture, word wide population, aquatic food., Agribusiness,
Well-posedness and H(div)-conforming finite element approximation of a linearised model for inviscid incompressible flow
We consider a linearised model of incompressible inviscid flow. Using a regularisation based on the Hodge Laplacian we prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for smooth domains. The model problem is then discretised using H(div)-conforming finite element methods, for which we prove error estimates for the velocity approximation in the L2-norm of order O(hk+1/2). We also prove error estimates for the pressure error in the L2-norm
