Coyote tracks: examining the trickster in the works of Leslie Marmon Silko

The purpose of the current work is to extrapolate an understanding of the trickster figure as it is used in the literary works of Leslie Marmon Silko, a contemporary Laguna Pueblo author. Trickster analysis in Native American literature is primarily relegated to the study of traditional myths and stories, and only a few scholars approach the topic in contemporary Native American literature. Of those who do, none have chosen Silko’s works as the primary focus of their analysis. An examination of this type will contribute to and expand the existing literary criticism of Silko’s writings. Leslie Silko utilizes the traditional trickster figure of Native American myths by transferring him into the settings of the modern world with only minor changes to his typical set of characteristics. The most important element of Silko’s tricksters is the humor they elicit, which is so often misread by modern Western readers. Trickster tales are not moralistic, but contain a layer of comedy that serves as a relief and a support mechanism. The primary focus here is to explore the variety of trickster manifestations in Silko\u27s poems and stories and extract the core elements of the trickster archetype as Silko uses them in her unique style

Spin Dependence of D0-brane Interactions

The long-range, spin-dependent forces between D0-branes are related to long-range fundamental string interactions using duality. These interactions can then be computed by taking the long distance non-relativistic expansion of string four-point amplitudes. The Use of Eurasian Dogs to Protect Sheep from Predators in North America: A Summary of Research at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station

In the search for methods to reduce coyote (Canis latrans) predation on sheep, livestock guarding dogs have been found to be a relatively successful technique in a variety of conditions including open rangeland (Green and Woodruff in press) and fenced pastures (Linhart et al. 1979, McGrew and Bakesley 1982, Pfeifer and Goos 1982, Green et al. In Press a). Eurasian dogs (Coppinger and Coppinger 1980b) and mongrel dogs (Black 1981) reared from puppyhood with sheep become attentive to the flock, generally remain with sheep, and subsequently help to reduce predation (Coppinger et al. 1983)

The Reactions of Muskoxen to Snowmobile Harassment

Twenty-one harassment trials on 14 muskox herds were conducted in April and May 1982 on eastern Melville Island, N.W.T. Each trial consisted of a slow approach directly toward the herd on a snowmobile. The snowmobile, returned along its approach path as soon as 50% of the herd was alerted. Distance at which the first animal reacted (IRD) averaged 345.0 m(range 162-650 m) and the distance from the herd at closest approach (CAD) averaged 267.2 m(range 87-645 m). IRD was positively correlated with wind speed. No correlation between CAD and any of the measured variables was found. Maximum reaction level of the herd was positively correlated with herd size (rs = 0.488, P<0.05). No significant differences in IRD or CAD were found between or among classes of discrete variables such as topography and wind direction, but sample sizes were small. Adult female muskoxen reacted first more frequently than expected (P<0.02). Two herds were approached repeatedly (one six times and one three times) to assess habituation. Results were inconclusive. IRD for the herd that was approached three times decreased progressively. DO LIVESTOCK GUARDING DOGS LOSE THEIR EFFECTIVENESS OVER TIME?

Information about the effectiveness of livestock guarding dogs for reducing coyote predation on sheep was gathered from livestock producers in the Animal Damage Control Livestock Guarding Dog Program and in Colorado. Eighty-two percent of the producers contacted reported that the performance of their dogs remained the same or improved during 1993 compared with previous years. Eighteen percent of the producers reported a decrease in their dog\u27s effectiveness, but most still felt the dogs were a benefit to their livestock operation. Most producers who noted a decrease in effectiveness attributed it to an apparent increase in the number of coyotes and/or an increase in their predatory activities on livestock

In Pursuit of Important Goals: Nostalgia Fosters Heroic Perceptions via Social Connectedness

Research on the theoretical order causally linking heroism to social connectedness and inspiration does not exist to our knowledge (Allison & Green, 2020). We propose that nostalgia is a source of heroism because of the social nature of nostalgic memories. We designed two studies, one correlational and one experimental, to test how nostalgia relates to pursuit of an important goal, through increasing social connectedness, heroic perceptions, and inspiration. Online participants completed an ordinary writing task (Study 1) or were randomly assigned to either a nostalgic or ordinary writing task (Study 2), followed by measures of social connectedness, heroic perceptions, inspiration, and goal pursuit. Nostalgia significantly predicted goal pursuit via social connectedness, heroic perceptions, and inspiration. Theoretical, empirical, and practical implications for future work are discussed. We expanded upon the prosocial function of nostalgia by incorporating heroism into our full sequence. Therefore, we strengthened support for the motivational consequences of nostalgia that can be applied to goal setting and goal pursuit behaviors

Performance of a 62Zn/62Cu microgenerator in kit-based synthesis and delivery of [62Cu]Cu–ETS for PET perfusion imaging

The performance of a commercially produced 62Zn/62Cu microgenerator system, and an associated kit-based radiopharmaceutical synthesis method, was evaluated for clinical site production of [62Cu]Cu-ETS (ethylglyoxal bis(thiosemicarbazonato)copper(II)), an investigational agent for PET perfusion imaging. Using 37 generators, containing 1.84 ± 0.23 GBq 62Zn at 9:00 AM on the day of clinical use, a total of 45 patient doses of [62Cu]Cu-ETS (672 ± 172 MBq) were delivered without difficulty. 62Cu elution yields were high (approximately 90%), accompanied by extremely low 62Zn breakthrough (<0.001%). Radiopharmaceutical preparation, from the start-of-elution to time-of-injection, consumed less than five minutes. The 62Zn/62Cu microgenerator was a dependable source of short-lived positron-emitting 62Cu, and the kit-based synthesis proved to be rapid, robust, and highly reliable for “on-demand” delivery of [62Cu]Cu-ETS for PET perfusion imaging

I-Brane Inflow and Anomalous Couplings on D-Branes
