The low energy expansion of the one-loop type II superstring amplitude
The one-loop four-graviton amplitude in either of the type II superstring
theories is expanded in powers of the external momenta up to and including
terms of order s^4 log s R^4, where R^4 denotes a specific contraction of four
linearized Weyl tensors and s is a Mandelstam invariant. Terms in this series
are obtained by integrating powers of the two-dimensional scalar field theory
propagator over the toroidal world-sheet as well as the moduli of the torus.
The values of these coefficients match expectations based on duality relations

Near field structure of wing tip vortices
High spatial resolution experiments in the near field of a trailing vortex using a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry technique have been carried out. A NACA 0015 model with flat tip has been tested for several Reynolds numbers and angles of attack.
An axisymmetric meandering of the vortex is observed and a discussion on the aperiodicity correction method has identified the helicity peak as the most convenient
indicator of the vortex centre. The axial velocity in the centre of the vortex has been recorded always as an excess except for low angle of attack cases where intermittent
peaks of excess and deficit are superimposed on a large patch of deficit velocity.
The double vortex structure and the consequent double inflection in the tangential velocity profiles is also studied with reference to a vortex age parameter. At already 2 chords of distance from the trailing edge the profiles exhibit axisymmetric behaviour. A spiral structure of the vortex core has been reported as effect of the early stage of the rolling up and considerations on the rotation confirmed the high dependency of the initial phase of the rolling up with the tip shape. The square tip produces a strong asymmetry of the vortex core and an intense secondary vortex.
Good agreement of the tangential velocity and the circulation profiles between the experiments and analytical vortex expressions has been observed. The results confirm
the existence of a three-part vortex structure, namely an inner, a logarithmic and an outer region of the vortex where the former is affected by the initial vortex structure
and the latter is not universal but shows a dependence on the angle of attack
Spin fluctuations and superconductivity in powders of Fe_1+xTe_0.7Se_0.3 as a function of interstitial iron concentration
Using neutron inelastic scattering, we investigate the role of interstitial
iron on the low-energy spin fluctuations in powder samples of
Fe_{1+x}Te_{0.7}Se_{0.3}. We demonstrate how combining the principle of
detailed balance along with measurements at several temperatures allows us to
subtract both temperature-independent and phonon backgrounds from S(Q,\omega)
to obtain purely magnetic scattering. For small values of interstitial iron
(x=0.009(3)), the sample is superconducting (T_{c}=14 K) and displays a spin
gap of 7 meV peaked in momentum at wave vector q_{0}=(\pi,\pi) consistent with
single crystal results. On populating the interstitial iron sites, the
superconducting volume fraction decreases and we observe a filling in of the
low-energy magnetic fluctuations and a decrease of the characteristic wave
vector of the magnetic fluctuations. For large concentrations of interstitial
iron (x=0.048(2)) where the superconducting volume fraction is minimal, we
observe the presence of gapless spin fluctuations at a wave vector of
q_{0}=(\pi,0). We estimate the absolute total moment for the various samples
and find that the amount of interstitial iron does not change the total
magnetic spectral weight significantly, but rather has the effect of shifting
the spectral weight in Q and energy. These results show that the
superconducting and magnetic properties can be tuned by doping small amounts of
iron and are suggestive that interstitial iron concentration is also a
controlling dopant in the Fe_{1+x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y} phase diagram in addition to

Formulating Light Cone QCD on the Lattice
We present the near light cone Hamiltonian in lattice QCD depending on
the parameter , which gives the distance to the light cone. Since the
vacuum has zero momentum we can derive an effective Hamiltonian from
which is only quadratic in the momenta and therefore solvable by standard
methods. An approximate ground state wave functional is determined

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in GB pig herds : farm characteristics associated with heterogeneity in seroprevalence
Background: The between- and within-herd variability of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) antibodies were investigated in a cross-sectional study of 103 British pig herds conducted 2003–2004. Fifty pigs from each farm were tested for anti-PRRSV antibodies using
ELISA. A binomial logistic model was used to investigate management risks for farms with and without pigs with PRRSV antibodies and multilevel statistical models were used to investigate variability in pigs' log ELISA IRPC (relative index Ă— 100) in positive herds.
Results: Thirty-five herds (34.0%) were seronegative, 41 (39.8%) were seropositive and 27 (26.2%) were vaccinated. Herds were more likely to be seronegative if they had < 250 sows (OR 3.86 (95% CI 1.46, 10.19)) and if the nearest pig herd was ≥ 2 miles away (OR 3.42 (95% CI 1.29, 9.12)). The
mean log IRPC in seropositive herds was 3.02 (range, 0.83 – 5.58). Sixteen seropositive herds had only seropositive adult pigs. In these herds, pigs had -0.06 (95% CI -0.10, -0.01) lower log IRPC for every mile increase in distance to the nearest pig unit, and -0.56 (95% CI -1.02, -0.10) lower log IRPC when quarantine facilities were present. For 25 herds with seropositive young stock and adults, lower log IRPC were associated with isolating purchased stock for ≥ 6 days (coefficient - 0.46, 95% CI -0.81, -0.11), requesting ≥ 48 hours 'pig-free time' from humans (coefficient -0.44, 95% CI -0.79, -0.10) and purchasing gilts (coefficient -0.61, 95% CI -0.92, -0.29).
Conclusion: These patterns are consistent with PRRSV failing to persist indefinitely on some infected farms, with fadeout more likely in smaller herds with little/no reintroduction of infectious stock. Persistence of infection may be associated with large herds in pig-dense regions with repeated reintroduction
The control of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in sheep flocks : a mathematical model of the impact of vaccination, serological testing, clinical examination and lancing of abscesses
A mathematical model of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in sheep flocks was used to evaluate strategies for control and elimination of caseous lymphadenitis (CIA). Control strategies tested were vaccination, serological testing and removal of seropositives, clinical examination and removal of sheep with abscesses, lancing abscesses, and appropriate combinations. Three different infection rates with and without replacement of culled ewes were used to evaluate the control options. Controls were either implemented immediately after infection was detected in a flock or once CIA was at endemic equilibrium, and with different frequencies of examination or testing. Elimination of infection was defined as 99% confidence that no sheep were infected with C. pseudo tuberculosis. The control strategies were evaluated by estimating the reduction in infection or probability of elimination and the number of ewes culled from the flock.
Lancing abscesses reduced the prevalence of infection when the initial prevalence was 0.90, but vaccination combined with clinical examination reduced infection rapidly with little impact on lamb productivity. Further research is required to develop a diagnostic test with at least 0.90 specificity and sensitivity under field conditions before any methods of control can be recommended with confidence

Remarks on the Classical Size of D-Branes
We discuss different criteria for `classical size' of extremal Dirichlet
p-branes in type-II supergravity. Using strong-weak coupling duality, we find
that the size of the strong-coupling region at the core of the (p<3)-branes, is
always given by the asymptotic string scale, if measured in the weakly coupled
dual string metric. We also point out how the eleven-dimensional Planck scale
arises in the classical 0-brane solution, as well as the ten-dimensional Planck
