“The One for the Many” Theme in James Torrance\u27s Theology

The theme of the one for the many is a golden thread weaving its way through the heart of Torrance’s understanding of the Person and atoning work of Jesus Christ. Distinct from a Platonic connotation, it expresses the yearning and relentless determination of the Triune God to reclaim creation from its dysfunction and realize its true destiny in personal union and communion with the Triune God of grace. Anchored in the manifold richness of God’s outgoing love as Father, Son and Spirit, the God’s covenant relationship with Israel is decidedly marked by its commission to be the one for the many in the outworking of God’s redemptive plan. From Israel’s history we find crucially illuminating categories by which to understand the Person and priestly atoning work of the Incarnate Son of God, whose humanity is not merely the instrumental means but the vicarious venue wherein atoning grace is realized for us on our behalf, yet which includes us. The Christian life is not merely imitation of Christ but lifelong response of worship and trusting obedience in God, enabled and sanctified by participation in the One Truly Efficacious Response of Christ made for us in our place. As the One Body of Christ, the Church is called to participate in Christ’s ongoing priestly ministry in loving service to the world

Systematic Theology and Spiritual Formation: Recovering Obscured Unities

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:9-14) “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ–-to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9–11)1 </jats:p

Theology as Science: A Response to Theology as Queen and Psychology as Handmaid

In response to Porter\u27s article, Theology as Queen and Psychology as Handmaid, three criteria are offered for theology as science. A scientific theology must be open to new discovery, it requires a community, and it is available for practical application. In addition to the benefits offered by Porter, viewing theology as science can promote practical helping efforts within the church

    Hispanic Teologia en Conjunto”

Pervasive throughout postmodern theological perspectives is the contention that all theology is contextual. One\u27s knowledge and understanding of God, the natural world, human beings and their interrelations is inescapably filtered through overlaid lenses of language, culture, history, socioeconomic status, religious traditions, and faith experience. Teologia en Conjunto (literally, in conjunction with;\u27 conjoined to ) expresses the conviction of a growing number of Latino theologians that this nexus of influencing contextual factors is not tangential to but rather formative of one\u27s theology. The social, cultural or ethnic location of Latinos, consciously or unconsciously, shapes how they interpret life experiences as well as biblical history and doctrinal teaching. Endemic to this approach are three core aspects: ( 1) the recognition that Latino traditions and ethnicities are not homogenous but richly diverse (e.g., Cuban, Mexican American, Puerto Rican); (2) theology is best done not as an individualistic endeavor but rather from within a communal, collaborative faith context where diverse voices are acknowledged and taken seriously; and (3) an adequate theology must seek to be integrative, taking stock of individual and corporate, social and religious, physical and spiritual, academic and practical aspects

    Ann Austin

The story of the Quaker Ann Austin is a story of resilience and resolve despite unremitting opposition. Mid-seventeenth-century colonial America was a paradox of settlers who braved perilous seas to escape persecution and find religious freedom in the colonies. Yet some of those same groups ironically became inhospitable, even hostile, to other immigrants seeking similar freedom to practice and promote their religious beliefs. Ann Austin, mother of five children and described as a woman stricken in years:\u27 traveled with fellow Quaker Mary Fisher, an unmarried former maidservant, to the colonies by way of Barbados aboard the ship Swallow. Fueled with the ardor to proclaim the truth as they saw it, they arrived in Boston Harbor on 11 July 1656

    Grace Communion International

While this denomination has only been known as Grace Communion International since April 2009, it represents the radical metamorphosis of a movement that began in Oregon in the 1930s under the leadership of Herbert Armstrong. As his autobiography attests, this young newspaper advertising designer experienced a life-changing conversion to faith in Jesus Christ in the 1920s that ignited within him an unspeakable joy and ravenous appetite to study the Bible. The more he learned, the more compelled he became to share his insights with others by writing articles. But by the mid- to late-20s a growing disenchantment with mainstream evangelicalism prodded him to engage in fellowship at other spiritual venues such as the Church of God (Seventh Day) in Salem, Oregon, where he was issued a ministerial license in 1931 (a credential later revoked over doctrinal disputes). It was not long before he began preaching to and leading small groups of what became a growing following. Eventually, around 1934 a radio program was launched. Initially called The Radio Church of God, it later became known as The World Tomorrow. The Plain Truth magazine became yet another wide-reaching vehicle for disseminating his ideas

This offers a way to bypass triplet absorption and annihilation in organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs). In this work, two versatile TADF emitters 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz for application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and OSLs are presented. Both emitters possess moderately high singlet-triplet energy gap, ΔEST (≈0.30 eV) and show high photoluminescence quantum yields, ΊPL, in solution and solid-state and prominent stimulated emission features in solution. Films of 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz doped in mCBP show an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold of 41.0 and 44.9 ”J/cm2, respectively. The OLEDs with 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz emit with peak wavelengths of 492 and 475 nm, respectively, and show corresponding maximum external quantum efficiencies, EQEmax, of 24.6 and 21.3%. The research shows that D-A TADF materials hold significant potential not only as emitters for OLEDs but also in OSLs.Peer reviewe

Xpert MTB/RIF assay did not improve diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis among child contacts in Rwanda

INTRODUCTION: To report on the diagnostic yield using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay on gastric lavage samples from children (<15 years) who were household contacts of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Kigali, Rwanda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 216 child contacts of index cases with sputum smear-positive TB over a 7 month period, from 1st August 2015 to 29th February 2016. Child contacts with tuberculosisrelated symptoms or abnormal chest X-ray had sputum collected by gastric lavage on two consecutive days and samples were examined by smear microscopy, Xpert MTB/RIF assay and solid culture. RESULTS: Of the 216 child contacts, 94 (44%) were less than 5 years of age. Most of them 84 (89%) were receiving isoniazid preventive therapy at the time of screening. Thirty seven out of 216 children had TB-related symptoms. Only 4 (10.8%) were clinically diagnosed with TB; and none had bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis. CONCLUSION: The use of Xpert MTB/RIF assay did not contribute to bacteriological confirmation of active TB in child contacts in this study. The low prevalence of tuberculosis in child contacts in this study may reflect the high coverage of preventive therapy in young (<5 years) child contacts. The low sensitivity of Xpert MTB/RIF assay in contacts may also suggest likely reflection of paucibacillary disease
