Augustine’s Use of Neoplatonism in Confessions VII: A Response to Peter King
A modified version of Michael Gorman's comments on Peter King’s paper at the 2004 Henle Conference. Above all, an account of Augustine’s purposes in discussing Neoplatonism in Confessions VII, showing why Augustine does not tell us certain things we wish he would. Estimation of elastic and viscous properties of the left ventricle based on annulus plane harmonic behavior
Assessment of left ventricular (LV) function
with an emphasis on contractility has been a challenge
in cardiac mechanics during the recent decades. The LV
function is usually described by the LV pressurevolume
(P-V) diagram. The standard P-V diagrams are
easy to interpret but difficult to obtain and require
invasive instrumentation for measuring the
corresponding volume and pressure data. In the present
study, we introduce a technique that can estimate the
viscoelastic properties of the LV based on harmonic
behavior of the ventricular chamber and it can be
applied non-invasively as well. The estimation technique
is based on modeling the actual long axis displacement
of the mitral annulus plane toward the cardiac base as a
linear damped oscillator with time-varying coefficients.
The time-varying parameters of the model were
estimated by a standard Recursive Linear Least
Squares (RLLS) technique. LV stiffness at end-systole
and end diastole was in the range of 61.86-136.00
dyne/g.cm and 1.25-21.02 dyne/g.cm, respectively. The
only input used in this model was the long axis
displacement of the annulus plane, which can also be
obtained non-invasively using tissue Doppler or MR
imaging
A Public Policy Toward the Management of Feral Cats
[Excerpt] “This paper examines the current wildlife laws, both federal and state, to determine what laws may apply to managing the feral cat population. It begins with a determination of how domestic cats are classified under these laws. Since many laws are vague, the intent of the legislatures is investigated to determine if domestic cats were meant to be defined as a nonindigenous species. The focus then shifts to indicate ways to control the feral domestic cat population. Current trends in the control of other nonindigenous species appear to revolve around public nuisance claims; however, due to the unique nature of domestic cats, these laws are poor candidates for managing the unwanted domestic cat population. On the other hand, given the recent increase in the enactment of leash laws, courts may be more inclined to apply public nuisance laws to cats.

Production of Korean Case Particles in an English-Korean Bilingual Child with Specific Language Impairment: A Preliminary Study
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of Korean case particles in a Korean-English bilingual child with specific language impairment (SLI). The child\u27s production of four types of Korean case particles were compared to those of three typically developing children during probe and storytelling tasks. The Korean-English bilingual child with SLI produced the vocative and the nominative for person case particles similar to children matched on age and mean length of utterance (MLU). He produced the nominative for object and accusative case particles similar to the MLU-matched child but exhibited lower performance than that of his age-matched peers. The results suggest that longer duration of Korean case particles in the phrase-final position may provide perceptual salience and not pose particular difficulty for the Korean-English bilingual with SLI. Frequent omission of the accusative by the child with SLI and his MLU-matched peer, however, supports the argument that frequency effect in linguistic input influences morphological development. Analysis of the free vibration of a coupled plate/fluid interacting system and interpretation using sub-system modal energy
This paper describes a method for describing and quantifying the vibratory behaviour of interacting structural/fluid systems based upon reference to the relative energy associated with each of the sub-systems. The particular case selected is that of a circular plate in interaction with a cylindrical fluid cavity. A theoretical analysis is performed, based upon the Euler Bernoulli and Helmholtz equations combined through a Galerkin technique, from which the natural frequencies and associated mode functions of the interacting system are calculated. The convergence of the analysis is investigated and the opportunity is taken to investigate the sensitivity of the coupled natural frequencies to different assumed mode shapes of the plate in vacuo. Subsequently the coupled mode functions are used to describe details of the energy associated with the plate and the fluid. It is found that presentation of these relative energies renders a satisfactory insight into the vibration behaviour of the coupled system
