In-silico platform for the multifunctional design of 3D printed conductive components
The effective electric resistivity of conductive thermoplastics manufactured by filament extrusion methods is determined by both the material constituents and the printing parameters. The former determines the multifunctional nature of the composite, whereas the latter dictates the mesostructural characteristics such as filament adhesion and void distribution. This work provides a multi-scale computational framework to evaluate the thermo-electro-mechanical behaviour of printed conductive polymers. A full-field homogenisation model first provides the influence of material and mesostructural features (i.e., filament orientations, voids and adhesion between filaments). Then, a macroscopic continuum model elucidates the effects of thermo-electro-mechanical mixed boundary conditions. The in-silico multi-scale methodology is validated with extensive original multi-physical experiments and a functional application consisting of an electro-heatable printing cartridge. Overall, this work establishes the foundations to virtually break the gap between mesoscopic and macroscopic multifunctional responses in conductive components manufactured by additive manufacturing techniques
A case analysis of a product lifecycle information management framework for SMEs.
Information management during the product lifecycle has received a great deal of attention over the last few years, mainly because firms work in a complex business environment characterized by information overload, high levels of competitiveness and the acceleration of technological change. In this context, Product Lifecycle Management(PLM) software has been evolving rapidly and,today, powerfultools in the market enable high levels of information to be managed. However, commercial PLM software is mostly oriented towards large-sized firms, which poses a big challenge for small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs). To address this issue, SMEs can develop their own Product Lifecycle Information Management (PLIM) Frameworks for managing data and information throughout the product lifecycle processes. Analysis of candidates for interacting galaxy clusters: I. A1204 and A2029/A2033
Merging galaxy clusters allow for the study of different mass components, dark and baryonic, separately. Also, their occurrence enables to test the ΛCDM scenario, which can be used to put constraints on the selfinteracting cross-section of the dark-matter particle. It is necessary to perform a homogeneous analysis of these systems. Hence, based on a recently presented sample of candidates for interacting galaxy clusters, we present the analysis of two of these cataloged systems. In this work, the first of a series devoted to characterizing galaxy clusters in merger processes, we perform a weak lensing analysis of clusters A1204 and A2029/2033 to derive the total masses of each identified interacting structure together with a dynamical study based on a two-body model. We also describe the gas and the mass distributions in the field through a lensing and an X-ray analysis. This is the first of a series of works which will analyze these type of system in order to characterize them. Neither merging cluster candidate shows evidence of having had a recent merger event. Nevertheless, there is dynamicalevidence that these systems could be interacting or could interact in the future. It is necessary to include more constraints in order to improve the methodology of classifying merging galaxy clusters.Characterization of these clusters is important in order to properly understand the nature of these systems and their connection withdynamical studies.Fil: Gonzalez, Elizabeth Johana. Microbial plankton community structure and function responses to vitamin B12 and B1 amendments in an upwelling system
B vitamins are essential cofactors for practically all living organisms on Earth and are produced by a selection of microorganisms. An imbalance between high demand and limited production, in concert with abiotic processes, may explain the low availability of these vitamins in marine systems. Natural microbial communities from surface shelf water in the productive area off northwestern Spain were enclosed in mesocosms in winter, spring, and summer 2016. In order to explore the impact of B-vitamin availability on microbial community composition (16S and 18S rRNA gene sequence analysis) and bacterial function (metatranscriptomics analysis) in different seasons, enrichment experiments were conducted with seawater from the mesocosms. Our findings revealed that significant increases in phytoplankton or prokaryote biomass associated with vitamin B12 and/or B1 amendments were not accompanied by significant changes in community composition, suggesting that most of the microbial taxa benefited from the external B-vitamin supply. Metatranscriptome analysis suggested that many bacteria were potential consumers of vitamins B12 and B1, although the relative abundance of reads related to synthesis was ca. 3.6-fold higher than that related to uptake. Alteromonadales and Oceanospirillales accounted for important portions of vitamin B1 and B12 synthesis gene transcription, despite accounting for only minor portions of the bacterial community. Flavobacteriales appeared to be involved mostly in vitamin B12 and B1 uptake, and Pelagibacterales expressed genes involved in vitamin B1 uptake. Interestingly, the relative expression of vitamin B12 and B1 synthesis genes among bacteria strongly increased upon inorganic nutrient amendment. Collectively, these findings suggest that upwelling events intermittently occurring during spring and summer in productive ecosystems may ensure an adequate production of these cofactors to sustain high levels of phytoplankton growth and biomass.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad | Ref. Rapid bacterioplankton transcription cascades regulate organic matter utilization during phytoplankton bloom progression in a coastal upwelling system
Coastal upwelling zones are hotspots of oceanic productivity, driven by phytoplankton photosynthesis. Bacteria, in turn, grow on and are the principal remineralizers of dissolved organic matter (DOM) produced in aquatic ecosystems. However, the molecular processes that key bacterial taxa employ to regulate the turnover of phytoplankton-derived DOM are not well understood. We therefore carried out comparative time-series metatranscriptome analyses of bacterioplankton in the Northwest Iberian upwelling system, using parallel sampling of seawater and mesocosms with in situ-like conditions. The mesocosm experiment uncovered a taxon-specific progression of transcriptional responses from bloom development (characterized by a diverse set of taxa in the orders Cellvibrionales, Rhodobacterales, and Pelagibacterales), over early decay (mainly taxa in the Alteromonadales and Flavobacteriales), to senescence phases (Flavobacteriales and Saprospirales taxa). Pronounced order-specific differences in the transcription of glycoside hydrolases, peptidases, and transporters were found, supporting that functional resource partitioning is dynamically structured by temporal changes in available DOM. In addition, comparative analysis of mesocosm and field samples revealed a high degree of metabolic plasticity in the degradation and uptake of carbohydrates and nitrogen-rich compounds, suggesting these gene systems critically contribute to modulating the stoichiometry of the labile DOM pool. Our findings suggest that cascades of transcriptional responses in gene systems for the utilization of organic matter and nutrients largely shape the fate of organic matter on the time scales typical of upwelling-driven phytoplankton blooms.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad | Ref. Factors associated with active commuting to school by bicycle from Bogota, Colombia: The FUPRECOL study
Background: Active commuting to school (ACS) can contribute to daily physical activity (PA) levels in children and adolescents. The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics of active commuting to and from school by bicycle and to identify the factors associated with the use of bicycles for active commuting to school based in a sample of schoolchildren in Bogota, Colombia.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 8,057 children and adolescents. A self-reported questionnaire was used to measure frequency and mode of commuting to school and the time it took them to get there. Weight, height, and waist circumference measurements were obtained using standardized methods, and mothers and fathers self-reported their highest level of educational attainment and household level. Multivariate analyses using unordered multinomial logistic regression models were conducted in the main analysis.Results: 21.9 % of the sample reported commuting by bicycle and 7.9 % reported commuting for more than 120 min. The multivariate logistic regression showed that boys, aged 9-12 years, and those whose parents had achieved higher levels of education (university/postgraduate) were the factors most strongly associated with a use bicycles as a means of active commuting to and from school.Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that it's necessary to promote ACS from childhood and to emphasize its use during the transition to adolescence and during adolescence itself in order to increase its continued use by students
Identification of tissue microRNAs predictive of sunitinib activity in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma
PURPOSE: To identify tissue microRNAs predictive of sunitinib activity in patients with metastatic renal-cell-carcinoma (MRCC) and to evaluate in vitro their mechanism of action in sunitinib resistance. METHODS: We screened 673 microRNAs using TaqMan Low-density-Arrays (TLDAs) in tumors from MRCC patients with extreme phenotypes of marked efficacy and resistance to sunitinib, selected from an identification cohort (n = 41). The most relevant differentially expressed microRNAs were selected using bioinformatics-based target prediction analysis and quantified by qRT-PCR in tumors from patients presenting similar phenotypes selected from an independent cohort (n = 101). In vitro experiments were conducted to study the role of miR-942 in sunitinib resistance. RESULTS: TLDAs identified 64 microRNAs differentially expressed in the identification cohort. Seven candidates were quantified by qRT-PCR in the independent series. MiR-942 was the most accurate predictor of sunitinib efficacy (p = 0.0074). High expression of miR-942, miR-628-5p, miR-133a, and miR-484 was significantly associated with decreased time to progression and overall survival. These microRNAs were also overexpressed in the sunitinib resistant cell line Caki-2 in comparison with the sensitive cell line. MiR-942 overexpression in Caki-2 up-regulates MMP-9 and VEGF secretion which, in turn, promote HBMEC endothelial migration and sunitinib resistance. CONCLUSIONS: We identified differentially expressed microRNAs in MRCC patients presenting marked sensitivity or resistance to sunitinib. MiR-942 was the best predictor of efficacy. We describe a novel paracrine mechanism through which high miR-942 levels in MRCC cells up-regulates MMP-9 and VEGF secretion to enhance endothelial migration and sunitinib resistance. Our results support further validation of these miRNA in clinical confirmatory studies
Incorporando un plan de Vida Saludable en la Terapia Familiar Conductual: Ejemplificando un Caso Clínico de una Mujer con historial de Violencia Doméstica, Negligencia Infantil, Abuso de Drogas y Obesidad
Women reported to child protective service agencies frequently report problems that significantly interfere with the health and well-being of their children and themselves. Behavioral treatment programs appear to be effective in managing these co-existing problems, such as domestic violence and substance abuse. However, evidence-supported interventions are rarely exemplified in complicated clinical cases, especially within child welfare settings. Therefore, in this case example, we describe the process of adapting an evidence-supported treatment to assist in managing significant co-existing health-related problems in a mother who was referred due to child neglect and drug abuse. At the conclusion of therapy, the participant reported improvements in perceived family relationships, illicit drug use, child maltreatment potential, whereas other health-related outcomes were mixed. Most improvements were maintained at 4-month follow-up. Issues relevant to implementing evidence-based treatments within community contexts are discussed, including methods of increasing the likelihood of valid outcome assessment, managing treatment integrity, and adjusting standardized treatments to accommodate co-occurring problems. Los programas de intervención conductual parecen ser eficaces en el manejo de problemas coexistentes como: la violencia doméstica y el abuso de drogas. Sin embargo, los tratamientos cuya eficacia ya ha sido demostrada en ocasiones anteriores, rara vez se han puesto en práctica en casos clínicos complicados, sobre todo en los centros de asistencia a menores. Por lo tanto, en este caso clínico, se describe el proceso de adaptación de un tratamiento eficaz para ayudar a controlar los problemas coexistentes de salud de una mujer acusada de negligencia infantil y abuso de drogas. Al finalizar el tratamiento, la participante informó sobre la mejoría en sus relaciones familiares, sobre su consumo de drogas y la negligencia infantil; aunque otros resultados relacionados con su salud no quedaron completamente claros. Gran parte de las mejorías se mantuvieron hasta 4 meses después de haber concluido el tratamiento. Antes de implementar cada fase del tratamiento, discutimos los contextos de la comunidad, aumentando así la probabilidad de obtener resultados positivos y respetando la integridad y el ajuste del tratamiento estándar para evitar que se presenten problemas en un futuro.Esta investigación se financió gracias a una subvención del Instituto Nacional de Drogodependencia (1R01DA020548-01A1) otorgada a Brad Donohue.
