The effects of foot intrinsic strengthening compared to balance training on self-perceived function in patients with chronic ankle instability: a meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Background: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common musculoskeletal impairment that negatively affects function and postural stability, especially in active populations. Recent evidence shows that intrinsic foot muscle (IFM) exercises may improve postural stability and functional outcomes in patients with CAI. Currently, balance training (BT) has been shown to be the most effective intervention for improving outcomes in this population. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare the effects of IFM versus BT in patients with CAI. Methods: A literature search using PubMed, Fresno State's One Search, Google Scholar, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials yielded 607 article results. After screening articles for inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 9 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Results: A medium effect size was found in favor of balance training for improving self-reported function via the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool. A similar effect size was found in favor of IFM training for improving overall postural stability via the Biodex Balance System. Results for both the primary and secondary analysis showed significant heterogeneity. Conclusion: Balance training is superior to IFM training for improving ankle function, while IFM may be better for improving postural stability outcomes in patients with chronic ankle instability

Antecedentes históricos de la suspensión del acto reclamado en el juicio de amparo

    Get PDF
It seems to me that the oldest antecedents of the suspension of the claimed act were found by the prominent legal scholar and researcher, Andrés Lira González, who, going back to colonial protection, tells us: “Another aspect of the scope of the protection order that is, the suspension of the claimed act. We find suspension of the acts claimed in almost all the amparos, since it can be seen how in the orders given to the mayors, magistrates, and in general executors of the amparo order they are warned to stop the acts of grievance; But this suspension or cessation is not comparable to that of modern procedural law, in which suspension is understood as the temporary cessation of the effects of specific legal acts. In this sense, there are, however, some clear cases of colonial protection, in which the commandment has these suspensive effects, such as the one granted in 1591 to the natives of Joxutla by the viceroy Don Luis de Velasco, protecting them in some lands.

[1] CHÁVEZ ASENCIO, Manuel F. May Measurement Month 2018: a pragmatic global screening campaign to raise awareness of blood pressure by the International Society of Hypertension

    Get PDF
Aims Raised blood pressure (BP) is the biggest contributor to mortality and disease burden worldwide and fewer than half of those with hypertension are aware of it. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global campaign set up in 2017, to raise awareness of high BP and as a pragmatic solution to a lack of formal screening worldwide. The 2018 campaign was expanded, aiming to include more participants and countries. Methods and results Eighty-nine countries participated in MMM 2018. Volunteers (≥18 years) were recruited through opportunistic sampling at a variety of screening sites. Each participant had three BP measurements and completed a questionnaire on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg, or taking antihypertensive medication. In total, 74.9% of screenees provided three BP readings. Multiple imputation using chained equations was used to impute missing readings. 1 504 963 individuals (mean age 45.3 years; 52.4% female) were screened. After multiple imputation, 502 079 (33.4%) individuals had hypertension, of whom 59.5% were aware of their diagnosis and 55.3% were taking antihypertensive medication. Of those on medication, 60.0% were controlled and of all hypertensives, 33.2% were controlled. We detected 224 285 individuals with untreated hypertension and 111 214 individuals with inadequately treated (systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) hypertension. Conclusion May Measurement Month expanded significantly compared with 2017, including more participants in more countries. The campaign identified over 335 000 adults with untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. In the absence of systematic screening programmes, MMM was effective at raising awareness at least among these individuals at risk

The impact of SARS-CoV-2 in dementia across Latin America : A call for an urgent regional plan and coordinated response

    Get PDF
The SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic will disproportionately impact countries with weak economies and vulnerable populations including people with dementia. Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) are burdened with unstable economic development, fragile health systems, massive economic disparities, and a high prevalence of dementia. Here, we underscore the selective impact of SARS-CoV-2 on dementia among LACs, the specific strain on health systems devoted to dementia, and the subsequent effect of increasing inequalities among those with dementia in the region. Implementation of best practices for mitigation and containment faces particularly steep challenges in LACs. Based upon our consideration of these issues, we urgently call for a coordinated action plan, including the development of inexpensive mass testing and multilevel regional coordination for dementia care and related actions. Brain health diplomacy should lead to a shared and escalated response across the region, coordinating leadership, and triangulation between governments and international multilateral networks

Hyperdominance in Amazonian Forest Carbon Cycling

    Get PDF
While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few ‘hyperdominant’ species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of forest function is even more concentrated in a few species than is dominance of tree abundance, with only ≈1% of Amazon tree species responsible for 50% of carbon storage and productivity. Although those species that contribute most to biomass and productivity are often abundant, species maximum size is also influential, while the identity and ranking of dominant species varies by function and by region
