SBN: Yesterday, Today... and Tomorrow? The article provides a hitherto unpublished account of the design and planning phase of SBN - the Italian Library Network - on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the programme. Specifically, it focuses on two aspects of the project's development: the catalogue (i.e. how the idea of a data structure based on bibliographical links was conceived) and the role played by the ‚ÄėRavenna team‚Äô in realizing the first node of the network. Finally, some critical considerations on the management issues and on the future of SBN are discussed

Il testo di questo articolo √® stato letto dall'autore in occasione della presentazione del libro "Le Biblioteche di Luigi Crocetti, saggi, recensioni, paperoles". 2014. A cura di Laura Desideri e Alberto Petrucciani. Roma: Associazione Italiana Biblioteche. This article is the text read at the presentation of the book Le Biblioteche di Luigi Crocetti, saggi, recensioni, paperoles (The Libraries of Luigi Crocetti, essays, reviews, paperoles), AIB, 2014, edited by Laura Desideri and Alberto Petrucciani.Luigi Crocetti (died in 2007) was one of the most eminent personalities in the Italian library world of the last fifty years. Some of the most significant milestones of his career are: Director of the Laboratory of Restoration at The National Central Library in Florence, after the flood of the Arno river in 1966; Director of the Library and Archives Department of the Tuscany regional government; President of the Italian Library Association (AIB), Director of the Gabinetto G.P. Vieusseux. Crocetti was also leader of, or influential partner in, the major projects and programs developed in Italy during his professional life, including: the DDC 20 Italian Edition, the project SBN (the Italian Library Network), Editor of the journal Biblioteche Oggi , as well as collaborator in various journals and publishing activities. The numerous writings of Luigi Crocetti, published throughout his professional life, register punctually the evolution of libraries and librarian profession in times of major technological, cultural and social changes. Nevertheless Crocetti‚Äôs writings are not only an historical record of a perceptive (and committed) observer; they also constitute a collection of profound reflections and inspiring input for further discussion on the role of libraries and of culture in the society. Gifted with uncommon erudition, Crocetti shows an extraordinary ability to interpret the current reality and for see the future with a remarkable farsightedness. His writings touch on all aspects of the profession, from book preservation and restoration to public libraries, from cataloguing and indexing to library cooperation and networking, from national libraries, archives and museums, to user services. It is quite evident that Crocetti is aiming to an audience far beyond librarians, to include policy makers, managers, intellectuals and all those who have contact with libraries; in a final analysis he addresses to all citizens, being convinced that "culture is for everyone" and that ‚Äúlibraries must by their nature be deeply immersed in the overall cultural flow‚ÄĚ. Innovation and renovation of the professional mentality are recurrent themes in the writings of Crocetti. The Author - fully aware of the international debate and attentive to technological change - identified in the progressive loss of contact between libraries and cultural tradition one of the weak points of the Italian librarianship. According to his view, this situation emphasized the ‚Äėbureaucratization‚Äô of libraries and librarians, which is a major cause of the erosion of their intellectual function. "The Italian librarianship - notes bitterly Crocetti - is rich in the past and poor in tradition‚ÄĚ. It is a controversial issue, like many others (too often passed over by the professional debate) highlighted by Crocetti in his writing with clarity and equilibrium, like the true intellectual he was, able to rise above the interests of their own sector, but also capable of representing the aspiration to renew the librarian profession in the global dimension of our times

Prenatal Attachment and Perinatal Depression: A Systematic Review

Pregnancy is a period of complex bio-psychological changes, during which the development of an attachment bond to the fetus takes on a central role. Depressive symptoms are common during this period. Both symptoms of depression and low levels of prenatal attachment are related to negative outcomes in caregivers and infants. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement, this systematic review analyzes and systematizes 41 studies concerning the association between prenatal attachment and perinatal depression. The majority of the studies reported a significant association between the two. Specifically, prenatal depressive symptoms were found to be negatively associated with prenatal attachment. Furthermore, lower levels of prenatal attachment were related to higher postnatal depressive symptoms, although fewer studies assessed this association. While these results were found across different populations, conflicting findings emerged, suggesting they should be interpreted with caution, particularly in male samples and in non-normative pregnancies (e.g., high-risk pregnancies, medically assisted pregnancies, and pregnancies with previous perinatal losses). These results are clinically important for the perinatal screening process and for implementing preventive and treatment programs. However, future studies are needed to further confirm and generalize these results

Stabilization of negative capacitance in ferroelectric capacitors with and without a metal interlayer

The negative capacitance operation of a ferroelectric material is not only an intriguing material science topic, but also a property with important technological applications in nanoscale electron devices. Despite the growing interest for possible applications, the very existence of negative capacitance is still actively debated, even because experimental results for ferroelectric capacitors with or without a metal interlayer led to quite contradicting indications. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the NC operation in ferroelectric capacitorsandprovidenewinsightsaboutthediscrepanciesobservedinexperiments. Our models duly account for the three-dimensional nature of the problem and show a good agreement with several aspects of recent experiments. Our results also demonstrate that traps at the ferroelectric-dielectric interface play an important role in the feasibility of a stable negative capacitance operation in ferroelectric capacitors

Cryogenic Hydrogen Storage Tanks Exposed to Fires: a CFD study

    Get PDF
Hydrogen is one of the most suitable candidates in replacing heavy hydrocarbons. Liquefaction of fuels is one of the most effective processes to increase their low density. This is critical especially in large-scale or mobile applications such as in the maritime or aeronautical fields. A potential loss of integrity of the cryogenic storage equipment might lead to severe consequences due to the properties of these substances (e.g. high flammability). For this reason, this critical event must be avoided. The aim of this study is to analyse the behaviour of the cryogenic vessel and its lading when it is exposed to a fire and understand how to prevent a catastrophic rupture of the tank during this accident scenario. A two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis is carried out on a cryogenic liquid hydrogen (LH2) vessel to investigate its thermal response when engulfed in a fire. The model accounts for the evaporation and condensation of the substance and can predict the tank pressurization rate and temperature distribution. It is assumed that the vessel is completely engulfed in the fire (worst-case scenario). The CFD model is validated with the outcomes of a small-scale fire test of an LH2 tank. Critical indications on the dynamic response of the cryogenic tank involved in a worst-case accident scenario are provided. Tank pressurisation and temperature distributions of the case study can be exploited to provide conservative estimations of the time to failure (TTF) of the vessel. These outcomes represent useful information to support the emergency response to this type of accident scenario and can aid the selection of appropriate and effective safety barriers to prevent the complete destruction of the tank

Pre-natal Attachment and Parent-To-Infant Attachment: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
During the perinatal period, the establishment of the attachment relationship with the fetus and subsequently with the real child is crucial for the parents’ and the child’s well-being. Coherently with the assumption that the attachment relationship starts to develop during pregnancy, this systematic review aims to analyze and systematize studies focused on the association between pre-natal attachment and parent-to-infant attachment, in order to clarify the emerging results and provide useful information for clinical purposes. Nineteen studies were included. Sixteen researches identified a positive relationship between pre-natal attachment and parent-to-infant attachment, and three articles highlighted a negative association between antenatal attachment and post-partum bonding disorders. These results were found both in women and men, in normative and at-risk pregnancies, adopting different assessment approaches (i.e., self-report measures, observations, and projective measures). However, only small or moderate associations were found. Future studies are needed to further confirm these findings across different populations (e.g., male samples, non-normative samples or samples in disadvantaged conditions) and with different methodological approaches (e.g., observational measures). Moreover, studies would be needed in order to clarify mechanisms through which pre-natal attachment influences parent-to-infant attachment, as well as protective and risk factors which intervene between these two variables

miR-19a and miR-20a and tissue factor expression in activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Background and Aims. To investigate the behaviour of miR-19a and miR-20a, two microRNAs involved in posttranscriptional modulation of TF expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exposed to high glucose (HG) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and to evaluate the involvement of angiotensin II in that process. Methods. TF Procoagulant Activity (PCA, one-stage clotting assay), antigen (Ag, ELISA), and miR-19a and miR-20a levels (specific TaqMan¬ģ MicroRNA Assays) were evaluated in PBMCs exposed to high glucose (HG, 50‚ÄČmM), LPS (100‚ÄČng/mL), and Olmesartan (OLM, 10‚ąí6‚ÄČM), an angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist. Results. HG increased TF expression and decreased both miRs as compared to control glucose conditions (11.1‚ÄČmM). In HG-activated PBMCs, LPS stimulated TF expression and downregulated miR-20a, an effect reverted by OLM (10‚ąí6‚ÄČM); miR-19a expression was unchanged by LPS in both CG and HG conditions. Conclusions. miR-19a and miR-20a are inhibited by inflammatory stimuli active on TF expression and their response differs by the stimulus under investigation; angiotensin II may participate in that mechanism

B-type natriuretic peptide as a biochemical marker of left ventricular diastolic function: Assessment in asymptomatic patients 1 year after valve replacement for aortic stenosis.

Objectives: Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction after aortic valve replacement (AVR) carries a substantial risk of development of heart failure and reduced survival. In addition to echocardiography, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) provides a powerful incremental assessment of diastolic function. This study evaluates BNP as a marker of LV diastolic dysfunction in a cohort of patients with preserved LV ejection fraction who underwent AVR for pure aortic stenosis and the relationship between BNP values and the grade of LV diastolic dysfunction. Methods A total of 113 patients were included in the study. Echocardiographic evaluation was performed preoperatively, 5 days postoperatively and at 12-month follow-up, to assess LV dimensional and functional parameters. Diastolic function was labelled as normal, mild, moderate or severe dysfunction. Concomitantly, BNP levels were evaluated. Results Mild to severe diastolic dysfunction occurred preoperatively in all patients. At 12-month follow-up, 65 (62.5%) patients had mild and 25 (24.1%) moderate to severe diastolic dysfunction. BNP values, categorized for quartile distribution, correlated with diastolic dysfunction grade (P < 0.001 for each comparison). At receiver operating characteristic analysis, the BNP level of 120 pg/ml was 91% sensitive and 85% specific for diastolic disease, while 300 pg/ml was 80% sensitive and 91% specific for moderate or severe diastolic dysfunction. Twelve months after AVR, BNP values were strongly correlated with the significant echocardiographic parameters suggestive of diastolic dysfunction (P ‚ȧ 0.006 in all cases). Conclusions The BNP level following AVR is related to diastolic disease severity and may complement echocardiographic evaluation when symptoms are unclear and LV function is difficult to interpret
